Has more of a social club feel to it than a pub. Probably your best (if not only ) bet on finding a decent pint in Clacton.

I agree with Elijay below. I moved to the area in September 2013 and have visited this pub at least once a week since. The beers are £3.00 a pint and £2.50 on Wednesdays. There are always 4 or 5 beers on tap, with a good selection of strengths. There was a Strong Beer Festival recently with 6 barrels located in a small alcove adjacent to the bar and also 5 on tap. I have found all the staff really friendly and helpful (even offered free tasters) Havn't tried the food yet but looks really nice. Criticisms: The TV is always on and I find it a bit loud. I would prefer no TV but well you can't cater for everyone. I would like to see more smaller tables and less larger ones. And I wish there was a web site. Forgot to say, read in the local paper that it is in line for a makeover in the near future.

So far the comments I've read below are interesting! I am a new local but ever since my first visit to The Old Lifeboat House I have felt welcome there. I love visiting this pub for the real ales, friendly banter and faces I have come to know & on Wednesday nights the pub also serves a choice of 4 home cooked meals, using all locally sourced ingredients, at £5 per meal. Some comments state that there are not many pubs in Clacton (apart from this one and the Weatherspoon pub) but truthfully there are quite a few pubs in the central Clacton area, and a total of approximately 32 pubs in the Entire Clacton area, some are real dives but much fun and others are very classy and include a restaurant. A pub crawl by bicycle is well worth thinking about if you come to visit Clacton but make sure you include The Old Lifeboat House in your pub crawl!!

Agree with most of what the last poster says except the hard to find bit. It is on the main A133 Carnarvon Rd – just turn left from the station and it’s on the left just before you get to the Marine Parade. About half a dozen others in when I visited last Saturday. Quite plain really inside with a couple of dart boards. They have five hand pulls of ever changing ales sandwiched by two “T” bars for the fizzy stuff. I had a pint of Maldon’s for £3.00. A chalk board above the bar says “Wednesday £2.50 all ales” They also have a “We are in the GBG 2013” sticker in the window.

"Built on the corner of Church Road and Caernarvon Road, by A.&E.F. Cauler at a cost of 510. Later lengthened at an extra cost of 79.10.0d" - from their website. Had an excellent pint of Thornbridge "brother rabbit". There was another national brand ale on and another guest beer (not tried). If this freehouse was in any other town ie Chelmsford, it would be quite ordinary. However this is Clacton, and you have the wetherspoons and, er, thats it for any kind of half decent pub. So for that alone it is recommended on what may be a very short pub crawl. The pub is larger outisde than in. It does seem to be a locals place but no problem on that score, I think any visitors may get no further than the wetherspoons, as this place is a little hard to find if you don't know it is there. The landlord / barman was friendly enough. I think the current rating of 4.8 is a little low, I'm giving this a solid 7. What Clacton needs is some competition on the pub front !

Not the biggest of pubs, but at least a pub which is something of a rarity in Clacton. Certainly a locals boozer , but , we were made welcome. Couple of guests ales.

Unfriendly locals pub seemingly occupied by chavs. We left without even ordering anything. Can't say I regret this. Won't be back.

A small pub just to the side of the main shopping area. It is a one room pub which has obviously been converted from something else - possibly a lifeboat house? The decor is basic but it feels more like a club than a pub. It appears to be used by locals rather than tourists. It had 2 real ales on the bar which were reasonable.

A reasonable pint of TT landlord was quaffed, not the most exciting pub in the world though, 4/10

This was certainly reopened by July 2009, we had three great nights in here, including one during a spectacular thunderstorm! Beers were Spitfire, Taylors Landlord, and during our visit a 'mystery beer' which we never got chance to find out what it was! Friendly enough place, we will be back one day even though we live 250 miles away

Still an outlet for good beer in Clacton. Currently selling Greene King ales with customary quality.

Free house although only Shepherd Neame beers available. How about some local Essex Beers?
Friendly enough pub with outside covered area at the front.

CAMRA's only recommended pub in Clacton! Usually 3 real ales on and excellent friendly service. Well worth a visit
