Owned by Mitchells & Butlers, who operate it under the Sizzling Pubs brand, this is a potentially decent pub that serves food all day (largely meat and chips, but some limited veggie options can be found) and a small selection of common cask beers plus an occasional quest. Our family visit on a Saturday afternoon was unfortunate in that the sport tv was on and was very loud, and the card machine was broken so if we wanted to buy anything we needed to use cash. I was directed to go to the cash machine in the street. Given that the menu was not inviting, the beer selection was boring, and the tv noise was uncomfortable, I thought that being instructed to go outside was the right option. So we all went outside to Yates and ate there (though that turned out to be a less than pleasant experience in itself - so I'm still struggling to find a decent family pub in the city centre on a Saturday afternoon).

Went here recently on a Saturday night - great atmosphere although queue at the bar was horrendous.
|
Cheap drinks promos a lot of the time and outrageous merchandise that can really make a night out. But it is either dead in here or completely rammed.

Pulled an older lady! Great Stuff!

Rude & aggressive bouncers, slow bar staff, the customers resembled the walking dead.

Wow. What a night. Drinks prices are reasonable, and the customers are friendly plus hardly any trouble. If you like your disco and 70s/80s music and like to have a good night well smashed, then you've picked the right place.

OH NO. Not my cup of tea. I would recommend this one for older people only.

The place is a little bit small, but it is OK

Full of slappers aged 39+ dancing away to Abba. Imagine Sharon and Tracey from Birds of a Feather, multiply by 200, and you have flares. Always police outside every time I have been past.

Its alright, Probably what you expect as its the bog standerd club you get anywhere these days.

First visit to Southampton for a couple of years - what a night! Everyone just out to have a good time, no worries about fights -just dancing and drinking the night away. Admittedly the bouncers didnt let one of my mates in, but he was dressed like a tramp and i did try to con them that he was one of the Kiwi cricket team - and they did it in the calmest possibly way.
What a night!

if u r an 80s fan, ur missing something ... to me , its the music and the atmosphere that makes the place appealing ... whenever i'm in soton i make it a point to have a drink at flares ...
|
i went to flares may 2004, we had no problem with entry all very fair, drinks all rather cheap, my only personal complaint was i had no where to put my coat- next time i wont take it

In my experience there has always was a great atmosphere in flares all over the country, (eps. the Shrewsbury branch). Unfortunately I have found that the Soton branch does lack some things; for one I and feel that when I go in there with a university club we are most unwelcome for example the sailing club went in last Tuesday (hardly a busy day) and when I noticed the look on one of the bar staffs faces (Becky or Becca 20 or so) I said, jokingly looks like youd rather we werent here to which she replied looks like youre right in a more threatening than joking tone. So Flares Yes, Flares Southampton no, BIG NO NO, (for students at least).

This is now "Flares" an 80's style bar. There is always a big queue on Friday evenings, but I haven't worked out why.

Bar staff coped well enough on my only visit and it was a good job that they did as it was packed with footie fans. No trouble between both sets of fans so could recommend it for other away fans visiting Southampton. Apart from those of Pompey obviously. Though I don't suppose that many pubs will be open when Pompey visit in 03/04.
