Crown Inn, West Downback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We visit N Devon every summer, as my wife is originally from Barnstaple. We discovered The Crown Inn by chance about ten years ago , and have been back every year since, mainly for their famed steaks. The pub has been modernised and extended over the years, but still retains it`s charm. I always try a different guest beer , and this time it was one called ,something like, Scorachi. It was Japanese themed anyway. Excellent 4.3% ale, slipped down a treat , and I could have spent the night on a session with it. The steaks are starting to get a bit pricey , but when they are this good, quality is worth paying for. The dark haired young lady at front of house worked her socks off behind the bar and serving the meals, but remained friendly and cheery. Book a table in high season. You wo n`t be disappointed.

Pleasant place in a pleasant village just off the beaten track.
We did have lunch here and although it was very tasty I left still feeling hungry so felt a little disappointed.
The pub is very good though with a modern feel to the place but still has kept it's traditional feel to it.
Also a decent garden too.
7/10

Lunch with wife, daughter, son in law and baby grand daughter. Excellent food. Superb service. Worth a 9 as a family pub. Hard to fault.

I haven`t been to this pub for just a drink for many years but as far as food is concerned I think it`s great. This pub has become more acclaimed for it`s food these days and rightly so. I`m a local but live in London and if we had a place where I live that did such good, reasonably priced wholesome food as the Crown it would be packed out. Definitely recommended but book in advance on a saturday or in high season

Stayed in West Down at beginning of the "summer" and delighted to discover the Crown was only a few yards away. After a day walking or cycling, a pint or two here was very welcome. The guest beers were varied and interesting - as well as being very well kept. The staff always made us welcome. On the Saturday we had a great evening meal as well.

I have drank here several times over the years and have never understood why it is such an infrequent entry in the Good Beer Guide ! The garden is one of the best in the country. The range of real ale is good and well kept. The food is fairly cheap and a varied menu is available.I am really baffled ! Will any North Devon CAMRA member post why this is not in the guide ?
