The Sailors is a Newquay institution from when it first started to cater for surfies and a younger crowd way back in the mists of time when Norman Anstiss was the licensee and it was the done thing to drink Tuborg Gold label......'steam'. That pub is unrecognisable from those days and has been knocked through into a much, much larger premises. It is what it is ..... a large pub in a seaside town catering for a younger clientele...and does it well.

2 Skinners beers on offer in good enough condition. Not sure about the prices as I was charged different amounts for the same beer.
Service very slow - most staff concentrating on the food side of the pub of seemingly just wandering around doing nothing.

Good for the footie. Pity the albion didnt tyurn up. Great skinners ale. Liked it.

the pub half is quite nice but the night club is awful full of chavs and boisterous disgusting men and cheap looking women (not that theres many there!) i suppsoe if your a stag do looking for the club 18-30 thing you would like it, otherwise dont go!

What can I say, this was and always will be a great PUB.It was my local from 1962 to 1987 then I moved to Australia. What happened to Fred (barman) Jackie (barmaid) Norman Anstis was a great Publican, pity he passed away, had many a good night there and good days too.As I am writting this the memories are flooding back,Oh those were the days,we had some good lock -ins in those 25 years, great Pub, great people. Fantastic!!! I've just got back from spending new year in Newquay and this was one of the first pubs we went in. Great atmosphere and people are really friendly. I think me and my 11 friends in our bright orange boiler suits kinda scared some people but they were all loving writing on them! The seating outside is really nice too, alltho it was a bit cold which can't be helped! Brilliant!

Good pub to get drunk in, always seems to be a decent crowd, stumbled in there one winter and they had a quiz on and were made to feel very welcome. Not the sort of place for a bearded real ale freak but if you are stumbling round town visitng the pubs definetly head for this one

I met the best girl ever in this pub, and i'm distraught I didn't get her number. She was a trainee police women for Devon and Cornwall Police, 30 years old, lush eyes and pinched my Scout cap. The night was Sat 15th July. Email me if it was you.

Weird. The first time I went in some guy dressed as a 118 man tried to spit in my throat. It's that sort of thing that really puts me off. I went back another night and paid 5 for oxygen which I was convinced was a new way to get drunk quicker- it all looked like aftershock. Random.

I spent a year working in Watergate Bay in 1974. Hey, I'm old. The Sailors Arms was a brilliant pub then and it looks as though it's carried on the tradition. As others have said, no attitude, full of good people, good vibe. Good to see nothing's changed in thirty years.
Ah, the memories - wonder where Helen is now?

We go to Newquay at least 3 times a year and we always end up in Sailors- Its fab! It doesn't look much from the outside but its surprisingly big inside. Easily the best club in Newquay with top tunes and tastey men!

What a belter of a pub. Have just returned from a weekend in Newquay, and this place is just head and shoulders above the rest. Great atmosphere, and a ridiculously cheap bar really do the job. Rela low chav count too, fantastic.

Sailors was the best place in newquay! we cleaned them out of shot glasses at the bar one night after a heavy demand for b52s! put this place at the top of your list

Had some food in sailors last summer. Don't know how i survived. Sailors club is just a place to get wasted beyond belief. If thats your thing then good luck to ya.

It's worth pointing out that these pubs on the main drag do exactly what they say on the tin. Rammed with hen and stag parties, drunken people galore copping off with each other. If that's what you what, and let's be honest it's what a lot of the jolly campers who go to Newquay want, they're your cup of tea.
Luckily, the best pub in Newquay, nay the best pub in the world, is not listed on this site. Only a stones throw away from these places but off the beaten track and only known to a few. Long may it remain that way.

It's worth being a geek and pointing out that Sailors is a small pub, and is right next door to a huge cavernous nightclub also called Sailors. Take your pick.

Hey! was in newquay in July and sailors rocked my world!!!! hehe i had fun dancing on the podium!
|
Apologies Kat - just realised you didn't make the comment about northeners - it was in fact Baz from London. Oops. Sorry about that.
debbie - 4 Sep 2003 11:22 |
I can't believe the comment about the Northerners by Kat - a bit shortsighted of you!
A few of my "northern" friends and myself visited Nequay in July and stumbled into Sailors on our first night there. It was a big lively place, loads of bars, lots of totty and a great place to end the night. That's not to say there weren't the normal sticky floors and drunken skids holding up the bar - but what club can you go to and not witness that? I wonder if they were the northerners or southerners.....

This place seemed to be the place to go if you're local. Not as many stag/ hen gangs when I went, which could be considered a plus.
Played rocky tunes to a constantly running video of Californians falling off their BMXs and injuring themselves, which to me was another plus.

you will find locals and visitors in this pub, great food with a garden patio overlooking town beach. pumping at night with live DJ's and watch surfing on big screen! Theres also a pool table if your lucky enough to kick the locals off it!! Go to the restaurant end of the bar which is especially designated for shooters and knock back a few of those before going next door to the Sailors nightclub! Usually around a fiver to get in but well worth it! One main dance floor which is overlooked by four others, great for talent spotting!Plenty of bars dotted all around the club including a cocktail bar to ensure you wont go thirsty!!

Despite the deceptive name, its not a gay bar! Joined to Sailors club next door, this pub is ideal to drink in before stumbling over to the club. Friendly atmosphere and relatively cheap drinks (I think, cant quite remember!)
