George Hotel, Wedmoreback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Rodger Wilkins informed me that he now sells cider to this house. I've not yet been able to get there and sample it.

A traditional, stone built pub in the heart of Wedmore, it consists of several different bars on different levels and in addition to this there are a few picnic benches out the front which is a pleasant enough spot to watch the world go by. There is a skittles alley at the back and a match was in progress on our visit.
Even the bar counter itself is split across two levels with the draught ale pumps on the upper bar and everything else on the lower one. Seating in this upper bar is quite limited with just a few stools at the bar, but the lower level is an attractive room with exposed stone walls, a flagstone floor and some chunky pine tables. A number of old metal advertising signs are on the walls and there is a free standing wood burning stove in on corner surrounded by an old sofa and a couple of arm chairs. There are a few books around to peruse, some board games and a darts board in the corner. The only thing that looked somewhat out of place was some rough grey plasterwork on the lower part of the walls. Why anyone would want to obscure the natural stone in this was I’m not sure.
We didn’t inspect the other bars closely, but the main one at the front looked to have more a hotel drawing room feel to it with old wooden boards on the floor, high backed black leather arm chairs and lots of black and white photos on the walls. The remaining rooms looked as though they may have been more geared up for food, with at least one of them having all the tables laid up.
Food wise, the menu offered a good selection of pub grub dishes such as Burger, Fish & Chips, Ham Egg & Chips and Sausage & Mash. There were also several fish options. Prices were perhaps slightly above your usual pub prices with the most of the mains being in the £10 - £12 range, although there were a few more expensive options as well. My Beer Battered Haddock & Chips was a decent enough dish with tender, flaky chunks of fish although if I were being critical I would say that some more fish and less chips would have been good. A cold seafood platter of Smoked Salmon & Trout, Crayfish Tails, Shell on Prawns & Cornish Crab was very good, but then at £16 you could argue that it should be.
Beers on tap were Doom Bar, Butcombe and Glastonbury’s Mystery Tor. The solitary cider was Thatcher’s Gold, unless you count some Raspberry concoction from Sheppy’s.

Fantastic, amazing, brilliant !!! A pubby pub with great beers straight from the cask, an amazing selection of lagers, Top grub, great staff, fantastic landlady. Well worth the trip. Loved it.

The George has now opened a new rsetaurant area in the pub complex called 1760 serving pasta and pizza. Ate there last week - excellent value for money, excellent tasting food well presented and well served in most relaxing surroundings.

Managed to get served after twice giving the pub a swerve on other occasions owing to apparently being invisible (both of us) whilst standing at the bar. Anyway, glad we did, as the Bath Gem was absolutely perfect, straight from the cask, beautiful, so a sesh was on. But the marvellous original flagstone flooring has been replaced by tiles. Criminal.....

Paid a return visit for dinner with friends. Pint of Doom Bar flat and disappointing. Food very good, nicely cooked and presented. The internal decor was quite dark and depressing, a lick of bright paint would be helpful. Also, soft furnishings would help to soften the noise as wooden floors and scrubbed tables have a tendency to be rather"echoey". Overall, one of the better places to eat in this area.

Called in for lunch. Nice pint of Doom Bar.The food was quite expensive for what is was although the quality was very good. The girl behind the bar was chatty in spite of being on her own and having to dash all over the place serving food. She did apologise for the delay in getting the food on the table which with two granchildren ,6 & 4, in tow was not a relaxing experience. At least they couldn`t do too much damage in the garden which bordered on the scruffy side of neat. A pleasant enough time to merit a return visit.

Popped in for a few ales and ciders on our cycle tour, very respectable, food smelled good. beer garden, clean and smart inside, polished wood floor, very bar (not pub) like in the back area,

Is this your first pub?

It was like finding a Disney Land in the heart of Somerset. Fantastic Real Ales from the Cask, Butcombe, Doombar plus guest ales galore. The food was amazing, fresh, local and imaginative. The decor was inspired, the staff were friendly and not pushy !!!! Just like a local should be. It has the charm of an old coaching inn but with a contemporary twist. Loved the Cherubs !!!! If this pub was a football team it would be premier league. Well worth a visit.Cant speak highly enough.........will be back soon with family and fiends. Thank you.

Nicely refurbed- has potential- had one or two customers though endlessly using expletives which isnt particularly appealing to me and my wife

Now reopened with new owners. Excellent alterations so far - more coming. Superb range of real ales, wines and food. A good place to visit.
