Under new Management. Was never a bad pub but really becoming worth a visit if you are that side of Chelmsford.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. In the same league as the Orange Tree and the Hop Beer Shop.

What a great little boozer. In Chelmsford for the cricket today, and spent both lunch and tea breaks in the United Brethren. Excellent food and a very good couple of pints of Hophead. Cricket was disappointing, the pub more than made up for the for the disappointment .

A decent pub with sensible prices - 2.60 for Woodforde Wherry on my visit. A proper local with friendly welcome and good service.

We visited this week after going to the Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. We were impressed with the pub which was clean and tidy and rather spacious.
Only two hand pumps in action on Thursday night Woodfordes 'Wherry' and Adnams 'Best'. My mate and I opted for the Wherry which was very good.
Its certainly an atractive pub with many different items scattered around the place and in the ceiling rafters. I would imagine this is a real community local pub. As others have pointed out, not too far to the excellent 'Queens Head' from here.

this pub deserves a visit a lot of effort made and decent beer and food but for a real treat walk abit further for the fantastic queens head !

Friendly "proper" pub, really good lunchtime food with extensive menu. This means it can get a little busy at lunchtime, particularly Fridays. So just get there a bit earlier...otherwise a good place for a quiet pint or several, particularly if you like Wherry. Sheila and the rest of the staff are lovely, shame about Mel! A good place to go, but NOT if you are a kn*b jockey intent on ruining other peoples' evenings ('cos they have the radio link, and your night out ends early in the custody suite). And yes, do mention the carpet...

Not a bad pub for a couple of pints.Woodforde Wherry in excellent condition.Think they have a few changing guest beers.

Really like this pub. Friendly bar staff that welcome new customers, you always get a table and some good beers. Mildly tatty round the edges, but in a good way. Don't forget to notice the carpet.

Went here years ago and remember thinking 'What a sh*t-hole'. Pleasantly surprised to find that is definitely not the case these days.
Now a delightful and thoughtfully decorated pub. Also had the delicious Woodforde Wherry and Crouch Vale Gold on as guest beers.
Certainly worth a visit. 7/10.

Friendly, backstreet pub. Parking may be a problem at busy times, but well worth taking the trouble.
We enjoyed a good half-hour drink today, amidst the few locals, and a couple of teams of drinkers on a treasure hunt. I would recommend this bar to anyone who enjoys a quiet pint, although I can't comment on what it's like at peak time.
A Gray & Sons establishment, close to football ground and Essex County Cricket grounds.
