Found the Spitfire a little off......and very expensive, especially considering how basic the pub is. Probably not a place I'll go back to.

Didn't want to go in there at first as the colour of the pub looked naff (who on earth chose mustard?). Bright white would be a lot fresher.
Anyway we went in because it looked more like a traditional pub as opposed to a naff themed one and were pleasantly surprised. It was nice and dark and cosy.
There was a bookshelf (proceeds would go towards Demelza House, which was nice and ethical). I always like pubs that have books in, and you can take them out, not just there for show. I noticed the games in the window which encouraged me to go into the pub. It also has old fashioned traditional games like shove ha'penny. I was looking for a pub that is fun in a traditional way and community focused. We had a nice cider. I think reviewers who go round bitching behind staff's backs are cowards. They were absolutely fine. I went out with a student from the University and trust me, not all students want to vomit and trash the place!
I'd definitely go back again 'as a regular', and hope to play some board games there (and chess), at least it keeps my middleaged student friend out of trouble!

Went in here on Good Friday and have to say the place impressed me. The Spitfire was well kept and the food selection was extensive. The Steak Huffkin was lovely and the Irish guy behind the bar couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming.

THE worst pint of Masterbrew ever (turgid, fizzy vinegar) plus the most ignorant/lazy bar staff all add up to a real disaster. It's not cheap either. Not one I'd recommend.

Well, if you like a nice traditional pub, then the Cricketers is fine at lunchtime/early evening. Nice menu (local produce) with at least one of Shepherd Neame's Real Ales on. My experience (1/2 visits a month) is pretty positive, except after about 8.30pm when the "can't have a drink without having a shot/gimme music at 150dB and oops, mind the vomit" brigade seem to gets let out of the zoo! Shame really but then, that's the way the Student Loan Company makes money! With that caveat (ie go early/lunchtime) the Cricketers is a good pub. Don't know about grumpy bar staff. Those that I saw working last time I was there were so off their face with whatever substance they'd been snorting, that they were positivley radiant/smiling and completely unable to work the till!

Full of students, difficult to get to bar, had to sit in the garden - in December. Music good but such a small venue ear plugs a necessity!

I had the worst pint of Masterbrew I have ever tasted in this pub on a busy Thursday night in August, however the band, and atmosphere was great. I will give it another go soon but will certainly try before I buy!

Some seriously grumpy barmaids!

Pleasant enough, especially when one has the opportunity of outside quaffage on the street. Sheps ales on reasonable form, and served with efficiency, if not always with charm. Altogether a solid local and certainly worthy of inclusion on a Canterbury crawl. Whether it has the potential appeal to make it an essential port-of-call when visiting the city, remains to be seen. It has the whiff of a classic if only it could just raise its game a little higher.

Excellent welcome for a stranger by the bar maid.
Perhaps a student pub; a bit bare, but clean, tidy, and with regular live music advertised, though piped music at time of visit.
Shepherd Neame, Kent bestSpitfire (off at the time of visit). Draught Leffe, Asahi on tap, as is Oranjeboom Extra Gold, Hurlimann Export, Holsten Export.
Food at lunch time.

Wandered in here with my Dad one lunchtime, in search of a pint and some food, but they didn't have any ales available, so we went elsewhere.
Weeks previous to this, however, the beers were available and, indeed, good. A nice town-centre pub for "beer in the daytime". I won't rate as I haven't visited in the evening.

Visited on Mon 22/01 early evening. Pretty quite only two people in plus "The French Barman". Only one beer engine with Invicta Ale. Nice clear pint. Entertainment arrived after five mins in the shape of a dozen or so students who amused us all by playing "18 holes" A new one on me - but the idea is to visit 18 pubs and whoever manages to drink his drink in one scores a hole in one!

A pretty average Shep's pub. Only one engine working on my visit dispensing Invicta Ale. The chap behind the bar was polite, friendly and efficent - but bore a worrying resemblance to Cain Dingle off Emmerdale!
The food looked pretty average. 4/10

Shepherd Neame pub. 3 Casks. Keg beers include Leffe, and the Sheps lagers. A long, narrow pub with a student barmaid. Corner location on High Street and pleasant open alley provides natural light in rear room. Shove half-penny table in rear room. Some walls removed to make pub more open and lighter. An accetable place of little character but some modest charm. The chairs are made from beer crates.

Very good pub on St Peter's Street - formerly Orang and before that Kentish Cricketers. Attracts varied, mainly young clientele. Good beers (Shepherd Neame) and very good outside area - perfect for sipping pints on a spring or summer afternoon
