Lovely Lakeland inn with log fires, nice old furniture, warm welcome from the people behind the bar and delicious home-brewed beers that are just what's needed after a hard days walking. Bought a few 330ml bottles of their one-off/special brews to quaff in front of a fire back at our cottage that evening too, with the Russian Stout being a favourite. Might come and stay next time.

One of two pubs in the area. Worth coming here for a drink after climbing Scafell Pike.
|
brilliant. best pub in Wasdale. great home brewed ale. just 2.30 a pint for Ermmm....!! Great food as well. I would recommend the Duck!
|
Extremely pleasant pub with excellent range of beers. Very pleasant surroundings and staff.

Little bit disappointed in my visit. The beer range is impressive and I can't fault any individual beer but the brewer is maybe trying too hard. It wouldn't hurt to have a core of two or three traditional beers and save all the experimentation for one or two rotating extras. Perhaps I'm being over-critical here. Place was a bit crowded with a yahoo-ish bunch of office worker types when I was there, which seemed out of place in a country pub so far from civilisation. Where do they work that they end up drinking/staying in Nether Wasdale?! My food was disappointing too. My pate and toast came with the blandest "Mothers Pride" white bread toast and the salad was way past its best. Gammon steak wasn't bad though. Good friendly service.

This pub has a great feel to it. They brew their own beers, and the atmosphere is fantastic. Happy locals cracking jokes all the time. Great.
|
Well they brew 18 sorts of beer with 5 on at any one time, so any beer drinker should be happy here. On top of that it has a 'homely' feel, lots of space and the portions of food coming out from the kitchens looked huge, ( although we didn't eat here) Tried the 'eerrmm' bitter which was an excellent session beer and very tasty for it's ABV; then went on to T'errminator - a 4.9 % choclatey porter which everyone loved. Friendly staff, great beer and food- definitely edging ahead of it's rival across the road (Robinson's beers only, not even a Cumbrian guest).

Stayed for two nights - really great. interesting range of beers from the micro-brewery supplemented by Jennings Stckle Pike.
Lovely food, nice garden, the village and the location itself are superb. Owners and other staff really friendly. I didn't want to leave.

Has a real ale festival in May. More popular for diners than the one over the road.
|
The food is superb, the staff are friendly, they have Stowford Press cider and the quirky little games room (table football, anyone?) make this place well worth a visit. This is one of my preferred watering holes when up in the area on business.

Going from strength to strength!! A really super spot. Try the welsh beer - daffodil - gorgeous.
|
Fantastic food, even better beer, good wine list, all well priced. Stay and enjoy the breakfast and then walk for miles before coming back for more great beer and food. Mark, Lesley and Adam the chef are doing a superb job. Seared scallops followed by proper roast beef dinner for 9.95 - you can't beat that. How pubs should be and no nasty pub co behind it, just hardworking freehouse owners who know what good service is all about.

Lovely pub/hotel in quiet village close to Wast water. Great views of the mountains from the outside seating. 5 or 6 well kept real ales on offer but unfortunately this didn't include any from their own on-site brewery on our visit. Friendly landlady. Interesting menu but did not try the food. Does not open until 4pm on Saturday but there's always The Screes over the road.

First time I've had goat, tasted lovely, with great ale too...

Been coming here for the last seven years since John and Becky were managers.
Now under new management and what a change for the better thats been. Great food, brilliant craic. great people.
As previously posted Mark and Lesley are doing a fantastic job and Mark's home brewed IPA is out of this world.
Went there with my brother on my stag night and had a seriously great time. Kudos to all the staff for being so friendly and hospitable to us all.
An example of how to do it.

Mark is now brewing his won beer in his brewery in an old stable out the back. First brew pretty tasty! Well done, Mark.

The new owners, Mark & Lesley, are making a wonderful job of managing the hotel, pub and restaurant. The photograph I have uploaded shows them in front of the main bar.
|
New owners know their business - now serving the best food in the lakes (think massive portions of slow cooked beef, pork, variety of game etc) and a really well kept selection of ales. I'm told the wine list is about to improve as well, so I'm looking forward to checking that out - might even have to drink two or three bottles. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it.

Lovely great food - as a vegetarian food was delicious asparagas loaf was dreamy.
Very friendly nice folk scene - nice people - loved our evening

The Strands has recently been taken over by a new management team, and an exceptionally friendly bunch they are, too. We called in here a few weeks ago, and were very impressed by the warm welcome, the well-kept cask ales and the food is very very good and well priced.

Over the road from the Screes and owned by the same people. They make sure they have different beers on at each pub, generally offering from Yates, Derwent and Jennings, and sometimes other Cumbrian brewers.
