I am surprised to hear bad comments about this pub. We love it and often go there when heading into Chelmsford. The Sunday carvery is fabulous. I always drink the real ales, normally two or three on offer. The service is friendly and personal. They've jsut re-vamped the end bar, so the pool table has gone, and they now have comfy chairs and and a corner church pew.

This is how a village pub should be. The standard of food and beer is always good, they're friendly and polite. You can't expect everything perfect all of the time, but they seem to strive for it. I give this pub 9/10.

Charming old building dating back at least 500 years. New landlady took over at end of 2008. Greene King beers on offer. Menu offers good value pub grub and the Sunday carvery is excellent. Thai menu just been introduced (June 2009) which we tried and enjoyed.

A dismal experience: poor food, poorer service and downright awful beer. It is clearly a struggling business, with the pavement outside the pub littered with signs advertising takeaway fish and chips, jazz nites and other incentives. Don't bother - there are much better pubs to visit in the area.

Have just been for a meal with the family to this establishmant, and wasn't impressed. It wasn't busy but i see no fault with this, Untill the staff start the work. We booked a table, but was told we could sit any where, fair enouhg. No explantion or the ordering system in place and only one menu between the 4 of us. When order at the bar, only 3 of the 4 starters arrived? This was quickly sorted. When the main meals finally arrived they were not corret, A rump steak that had been order med/well was well, along with liver that was order pink, came out well done. The sauces on the dishes tasted burnt and a Pesto and balsamic vinegar were put on the plate of the steak making the dish more unpalatable. VERY UNIMPRESSED!

The food served at this restaaurant is good enough as in a top London restaurant. The proce we paid was pennies to what we was given. Proper home cooked food, lovely choices and great service. Can't wait to go back.

Reputed to be the Oldest Pub in Essex, the Green Man is a lovely little country pub that does superb food all week. On Sundays they have a Carvery which is very popular, so you need to book.
