user reviews of the Old Hatchet, Winkfield Row

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The management of the Old Hatchet has changed recently resulting in a change (and lengthening) to the menu. The food was good - my wife's platter was excellent. Beer still of the same decent quality. My only gripe is that a 4th beer from Fuller's excellent range should be made available, particularly a lower-strength one.

Time for a top-up review on the beer: The beers available in December 2011 are Fullers: Pride, ESB and HSB. The HSB is well kept, and has been so in several visits over the last year. Prices for the beers are slightly high compared to other nearby places, but acceptable.
The pub has a car park, some modest outside seating, with plenty of space inside. It has old oak beams and tiled floors. Staff are good. Many come to eat (kids seem welcome too) but there is no problem in just drinking. It is free of piped music and TV and so is a goot pub to use for a chat.

Having read reviews, some unfavourable some good, four of us decided to try it out for ourselves. We were welcomed by friendly staff, the pub although virtually empty when we arrived had a nice atmosphere. Many tables were already reserved with people arriving gradually throughout the evening. The service was great with the food arriving in no time at all. All four meals were excellently presented and the comments were that all four of us hadn't had such a great meal out for a while. The menu needs to be slightly more extensive - mixed grilles, lasagne and fillet steak would be great additions. Would we recommend it : definitely

Three of us visited for drinks and a meal Sept 2010. Friendly and attentive staff and very well kept Fullers beers. My pint of London Pride and Seafarers were very good. There is a good selection of wine for those who like it.

My calamari starter was good. However my Toad-in-the-Hole was very poor. The staff know it was bad, so there was no fuss when I did not pay for it. The pasta and pork ordered by my two friends were alright.

We used to live in the area and visited many times for food and beer and the food always really excellent. However the food now seems rather variable in quality. I think this pub has changed hands in the last year or so.

I give the Hatchet 8/10 for beer (only free houses pubs with a lot of guest beers will get higher from me!) and 3/10 for food.

Recently visited this pub on a Friday evening for a beer and meal.

The Fullers real ales cannot be faulted, kept in great condition and a few to choose from. The staff were freindly.

BUT, the food is something that really need attention, the 'Prawn & Crayfish' starter had no crayfish, and the 'Rib Eye Steak' was awful. The steak was the smallest I've ever been served, and the accompanying onion rings were the most greasy I've been dished up.

Not a pub to be recommended for food in this very up-market area, especially as there are 3 other excellent pubs serving food within a mile of this one (the others also serve some good real ales too)

Visited for a meal and a few beers yesterday. The staff are different, but just as efficient and welcoming as previously. The beers available were Seafarers, Pride, HSB and ERSB. Seafarers and HSB tried and both in very good nick indeed.
Food good, as usual. Can be a bit pretentious and pricey but still a fine country pub.

Good selection of 6 Fullers beers on hand pump, although I wasnt able to sample any of them.
Interesting food menu, including two frogs legs dishes! Food was of a very good standard

This is a fearsomely upmarket pub but then it's a fearsomely upmarket area. The locals will try to maintain the fiction that it's a genuine country pub in a genuinely rural setting. It was once but now it's in that semi-rural semi-suburbia that persists for thirty odd miles around London.

Anyway it's been reasonably sympathetically, though of course needlessly, refurbished by Fuller's, who can be as dreadful as any when they set their minds to it. So there's a touch of the leather sofa disease but it isn't too annoying. And a touch of the gastro pretensions too, they like that round here, but that's reasonably low key and you can, remarkably these days, get a sandwich on a Sunday.

The beer? Well it's a GBG pub so it's fine, usual Fuller's/Gale's suspects but no Chiswick annoyingly.

Not a destination pub but if you are passing or staying in the area it certainly deserves a look.

Lovely country pub with a very friendly welcome from all the staff. The usual range of Fuller's ales is served about as well as anywhere in the area, and the food is excellent. The menu changes regularly. They are having a Bastille day celebrationm on 13 July too!
A bit up-market but an excellent pub nonetheless and always worth a visit IMHO.

The best pub I've visited so far since moving here. Denis keeps an excellent cellar and is very knowledgable about the ales. It's a Fullers pub so all the usual suspects but all worth a try. only eaten here once, good food but this is where I always end up for a good pint.
