The old Sun run by Sarah was a 16th Century coaching Inn full of character, which served great home cooked food and a variety of local or lesser known Ales such as Ramsbury (about 3 miles from Marlborough) Stonehenge. (about 10 miles from Marlborough) and Cornish Coaster.
Most of the staff were young locals who added to the very friendly and rather eccentric atmosphere
Sadly Patrick the Landlord passed away and Sarah had to sell.
The pub was then extensively renovated by the new leaseholder.
The pub is now has absolutely no atmosphere, a kind of “Holiday Inn” sameness people will be familiar with from many chain pubs and has a limited overpriced menu.
Gone are the old staff and most of the local beers which have been replaced by “buy anywhere” brands.
I ranked the old Sun as a 9.
The Marlborough is sadly a 2.
Really not worth it – try the Crown, which has atmosphere , wonderful well priced food and probably most of the locals that used to go to the Sun.
Including me :o)

went there on a Friday lunchtime for a snack/drink. Friendly bar staff and excellent menu. Good food nicely served. Sandwiches and meals like steak, fish.Three lovely rooms with log fires. nice cutlery and glasses. Excellent selection of beers. We will be back - this time for real leisurely lunch.

New Owners. Went there a few Satudays ago to discover that it has new owners/management. Unfortunately with this change the average age has dropped to about 22 and chav level has quadrupled = the men were wearing more jewellery than the women. A real shame.

I haven't been to all the pubs in town but I wouldn't be surprised if the previous review was right. I wasn't particularly keen on the Ramsbury which was all that was on at the time but I couldn't fault the sarnies. I sort of wish that we had stayed here rather than the place up the road.

The best pub in Marlborough, friendly owners, staff and patrons. It's got two distinct areas to choose from: an older traditional section with a huge fire, bar stools and dark wooden paneling and also a more modern lighter section. It has a good selection of ales and the food is at a reasonable price and of good quality. It's dog & child friendly (as long as they are well behaved) and seems to be popular with all ages - which speaks for itself. If I were to mark it down on anything, it would be its size, which is a bit on the small side but for many people that is probably a plus?!

stayed here May 2006 and totally agree with Tim Eyles comments, landlord is a keen guitarist and hosts some unique live guitar acts, (I even got to play his most prized guitar, dispite it being 9.30am in the morning)! This is a sensitively and passionately restored classic old inn with fine ales and a friendly welcome.

My folks have a place in Marlborough so I always stop by this pub when I'm in the area. It sums up everything a great pub should be - atmospheric old boozer, landlord and landlady are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet and the ale is extraordinarily more-ish. The canine inhabitants are usually pretty sociable too. If I lived in Marlborough this would definitely be my local.
