Update on last review. Sandra and Linda really try to keep the real ale moving and their choices are a LOT more varied and interesting than many in England, let alone D&G! The food quality is variable with chefs turning over fairly frequently, but if you want honest grub served with a reasonable ale, you could do a lot worse. How many pubs do YOU know where there IS no local credible competition?

Like a lot of rural pubs with a modest footfall, I guess the diners represent the main income stream, and the recent change of chef should help here. The range of cask ales are not always to our taste, with predictable Yorkshire and Midlands breweries being maybe a little over represented (we wish they would have a regular Sulwath beer) but we have had some cracking pints here and hope to enjoy many more. Sandra and her staff are friendly and effective, even when they have to multi-task. Do visit the Laurie it is a beacon of light in this part of D&G.

Family run village pub/restaurant. Had the duck from the restaurant menu which was fab. Was a very varied menu that i reckon would suit most pallettes. As a CAMRA member i couldnt resist the real ale on offer. They had 3 to choose from, a good selection of styles and strengths. Spoke to a member of staff there who was very friendly. She told us about how they have an ever changing range of real ales, from speaking to her i have to agree with their approach and disagree with the previous comment made. With different ales available everytime you go in it adds interest and gives you a chance to try ones that perhaps not readily available. For example i had "Raven" from Orkney Brewery, one that is rarely seen but a amazing pint so was great see it on offer.
I cant praise this place enough, was a lovely dinner, service from staff was great and the atmosphere perfect. Cant wait till our next visit.

Has not been CAMRA pub of the year for years.Real ale changes to often (every week). So no regular one.Food is ok,the problem is the lack of service in the bar on many occasions that i have been in you may have to ring the bell for service and still wait five minutes.my opinion and many others is that the focus seems to be on food service not on the bar or the locals,which is now becoming very noticeable as it is very few locals use it.Also closes early on three night per week.Not the place it once was. Just to finish once you do get a drink the barmaid disappears and you are left in a completely empty bar,if you want another drink RING THE BELL.

I have to agree with the former contributors, but would class the food somewhat better than decent - first time I've eaten a cooked avocado.

A little out of the way, but there is a bus stop outside with direct service to both Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie, plus a couple of good local taxi firms. The pub is a bit of a find for this area, always a couple (and during summer, three) real ales on at ant time, well kept and a good bar menu made with locally sourced foods. Try a mixed table with eight starters shared between four of you! Definately worth a trip out.

Small Village local with an ever changing range of 2 -3 guest beers and decent food.
