Somewhat disappointed in a small town with average pubs at best this was as the rest of them. Forge Brewery's Litehouse is a decent ale, not here, almost undrinkable. Nice enough service but drink in another town is my best advice

My wish came true.
During the past year, this pub has become "The Champ."
Great beers, brilliant musical entertainment of all genres and great food.
Very friendly and welcoming pub.

Its OK now booze fans. I've not been to Appledore before, so no nothing of its history. This pub was packed on a Friday night - with a band setting up at the far end. A busy friendly man kept bringing out the most wonderful looking Pizza's, but we had already eaten at the next door chipper. Never mind, we contended ourselves with the wonderful real ales that were on. Didn't catch its name - just asked for the "Dark Ale". Band were good, and more and more people of all ages kept coming in. Great pub.

Hopefully, one day, someone will make a go of this puib. However, once again its closed and the rumour is that the owner want to de-license it and use it as his private dwelling. This move must be objected to!!

Gave this pub another try a few weeks ago and it's got even worse than before! Beer foul with hardly any choice from the pumps, one beer, usually my favourite was being served from a BOX on the bar. Unbelievable! The management had allowed customers to bring in Fish and chips from the shop next door which stank the place out.The live duo were so loud the windows as rattling in the frames. This place has had 3 owners within the last 12 months or so which provides a clue and the only decent member of staff has moved to the Heavitree as she was embarrassed having to regularly tell customers that most of the taps had ran out. Avoid!!

Much improved since my last visit, with big sofas, an open fire and promises of food in the summer season. The place was empty when we dropped in. The Doom Bar was OK but nothing special, and the Tetley Green Shoots was absolutely foul - I had to return it. It's got potential this place, so I hope they get their act together.

'The Champ', a great liitle boozer? Your'e kidding right? Sez who? Whewn I went in a few weeks back there was a band setting up which looked as if they would actually take up half the pub! There were the band, 2 other customers, and a teen at the bar ( jeans at half mast, de riguer bum crack on show ) mooning at the girl behind the bar who looked as if she would have been too young to get served had she been a customer.

Stayed for a pint of lager, as there was no other choice, and left disappointed. This is not a pub, I've given it a 1 just for being open on a rainy night..

Now a great little boozer. Comfy sofas, candles, log fire, loud swearers not now not accepted. Lovely comfy pub where I would take my wife - unlike before its transformation when it was an all day chimps' tea party - maybe the inspiration for TV series 'Shameless' - but not any more.
Thoroughly recommended - just need to do food now and my happiness would be complete!

It's now re-opened as "The Champ." Calls itself a "Lager & Wine Bar," however they do have keg beer and the normal range of spirits. If you don't like stuffed animals as a decor, probably not for you.

Partly re-opened as of August. Undergoing "improvements" and will fully reopen by end of september, according to North Devon Journal.

Small boozer off the quay. Friendly Yorkshire landlord, though the 2 handpump ales were of a very Un-Yorkshire standard, having a decidedly opaque appearance, though they tasted OK. Recently been tarted up from a chintzy front room into badly-varnished tongue 'n' groove nauticalia. Not my favourite pub in the village, but I imagine it would do in an emergency.
