Hole I' The Wa', Dumfriesback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
In town, along with 1,500 other Hibbys, for a Doonhamers v. Spoonburners game. This is a fairly standard "tourist town" High Street boozer, with the entrance down an alley off the High Street. It must do OK, as it used to sponsor the clock on the big home terrace at Palmerston Park and it still has a prominent "stand alone" ad at that end of the ground. It's ancient and fairly quaint, but the booze selection, spirits included, is from the ScotMid carry-out catalog. I had a John Smith's - a pint of John Smith's: something to savour, I just love that Yorkshire flavour... well, I don't really, but John Smith's is at least drinkable in the absence of owt better. At least there was room to stand up and peruse the form for Newmarket, Hamilton and elsewhere, unlike most other pubs that were packed with soccer fans. Fruit machines and Man.U. v. Leicester on the box, though it was also showing one of the racing channels, which is a plus point.

this is a gem ,great entertainment and great prices ,both food and meal wise.
|
Big, typical town pub. Not a great choice of beer, but staff and customers were pleasant. It was late afternoon/early evening when we visited, so no karaoke.
|
Noisy, expensive, crap beer, although you do get a laugh at the Karaoke and dancing. Like the bar out of Star Wars.

update-
smoking ban has made this classic historical pub even better.... large smoking patio out the back...
est. 1620 this is an old gem...
called "Hole i' the Wa' because in 17th century women were not allowed in the pub and so they had to be served their pints through a "hole in the wall"...
always crowded and noisy...
still Karoke every night- still packed. noisy, and laughable...

The complete Dumfries pub experience. Could the hole i' the wa inn be the best pub in the world ever? Quite possibly. Or the worst. You can't deny its an original though. I don't know if they still have a guy playing the accordian at lunchtimes too, but that was cool as.
