hard to find decent pubs in the kings cross area but the driver is a very good choice for a day out with family and friends. amazing food, friendly staff affordable and worth the travelling if you live far

While this pub has a nice selection of beers it has very little else going for it. We spent 3 hours here and kept being turfed out of our seats by the manager because 'the seats are reserved from X pm'. This place needs to make up its mind whether it is a restaurant or pub and not advertise itself as a pub if it is going to turf people out who are looking to have a quiet, pleasant drink with friends. Truly awful.

WARNING The map is wrong... The symbol is pointing at the real location of the 'London Canal Museum' & the London Canal Museum symbol is where The Driver is situated. Confusing or what. ;-{}

Not bad inside but eye wateringly expensive, I know kings cross is up and coming but what they're charging here really does take the proverbial...

Not a bad effort for Kings Cross but a little confused as to what it wants to be, gastropub, club, private hire venue?
Downstairs is lovely, rustic wooden tables, subtle lighting, good wine list and the odd curiosity adorning the walls but upstairs looks a bit like a boudoir with flash leather sofas, lurid colours and seems a bit incongrous with the ground floor.
Cute little terrace on the top floor but a bit of a trekk if you are laden with pints.
Living in the area it is a good addition though and will be back to eat downstairs soon!

Surprisingly good. The bar downstairs is roomy, nicely lit and smart in decor. Drinks choice is modest but they do serve Taylor's Landlord. Food looks excellent. Roof garden is a bit of a trek but is a nice place to be if the sun's out although there isn't a view (unless you're over 6 feet tall).
Generally speaking the area is bereft of decent boozers and because of this, The Driver is definitely worth a visit. However it's unlikely to blow you away in any form.

Certainly better than I expected for the area, and surprising quiet for mid-evening. Decor-wise, an interesting mixture of old and new, and the food looked good. Reasonable pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord.

Most people think of Kings Cross as a dump, full of drossmonkeys and horrid boozers but if you hunt around you can find some real treats. This is one!!!
It looks a bit skanky from the outside but inside, a big and roomy bar, big wines list, couple of real ales and the food was very palatable. This was a weekday lunchtime visit so cannot comment on evenings... but i would not feel uncomfortable drinking the night away in the comfy sofas!!

When I worked in the area I could be found pretty much every lunch time propping up the bar of this place in its former guise as the General Picton. In those days it was just a straight forward locals boozer with darts, pool a pleasantly tatty and run down feel and maybe the odd questionable character. Like pretty much every pub in the area it has now lost its original identity and resurfaced following a trendy makeover although it has at least steered clear of becoming another Irish theme pub. The candlelit tables and extensive wine list could not be further away from the no thrills down to earth former life. The once unused fireplace now burns brightly and the basic furnishings have given way to dining room tables and sofas. The lighting is intimately subdued and where the jukebox once emitted Britpops finest, we now get funky R&B club rubbish (fortunately not particularly loud when I was there). Since the first thing I always do in walking into a pub is check out the Real Ales on offer, I am rather miffed to discover from the website and previous posters that they do 2 Real Ales. I must be going blind because I certainly did not spot any hand pumps and would certainly not have opted for a Fosters if Real Ales were available. All I can say is they are either cleverly hidden or no longer available. Whilst the bar obviously has a certain appeal to some in the regenerated Kings Cross scene, I for one lament the passing of yet another real pub (not that the Picton was that great) and I am sure the good General would turn in his grave to lose the only pub that honoured his name.

Excellent pub with the best food (apart from Smithys) in the area, and the prices are very reasonable too. Timothy Taylor Landlord and London Pride, as well as a really good wine list. This is my office local and I eat lunch here at least once a week. Good bar staff.

Food and service can be decent on occasion but a tad hit and miss. Don't bother ordering anything but the house wines as the staff behind the bar a utterly confused by the fairly extensive list chalked up on the board. Our choice took at least 15 minutes of rummaging around in the cellar before a sheepish bar man appreached us hiding the label of the bottle he'd dug out (not what we wanted) before hastily yanking the cork out and doing a runner. We were so thirsty by this point we couldn't be bothered to protest. The steak was delicious though...

The only chair that i sit on is the sofa and thats usually to eat my lunch or dinner because the foods amazing.it's versitile and exciting. I know the chef and trust me he's very tasty too. Also this is one of the only pubs in the are who sell LONDON PRIDE i love it its a treat.x

Agree with previous comment - almost! A great pub with spectacular food (a long menu which changes rapidly and has included kangaroo and osterich recently), particularly the burgers.
Ales have been Pride and Landlord for a long time now, but both are fine. The only frustrating thing is the long wine list; although it looks great I haven't yet managed to get what I've first asked for and the staff (with a few exceptions) know nothing about wine.

Nice little pub, big leather sofas, great selection of lagers and ales and a massive wine list.
The menu is a pretty varied affair, apparently it changes every day, lots of choice and very reasonable prices. Food is excellent, nicely presented and delicious.
Staff were all friendly and helpful.
Highly recommended
