Ventured into here again last night and stayed for two drinks. They had issues with the till but they still served us and asked us to stay at the bar so we could pay when they had got it sorted. After a few minutes of looking stressed, the guy who was presumably the manager got it working again, and we were then charged £6 for our two pints which I thought to be pretty reasonable. When we went back to the bar for another drink the same drinks were well over £7. Seemed a bit pricey but maybe I am getting out of touch.

This place is a bit run down but pretty spacious inside and usually room to stand at a weekend without someone walking into you every two minutes. As a real ale drinker I was a bit disappointed to discover it wasn't really a real ale kind of pub - however they did have Old Speckled Hen and it was nice enough. The gents toilets are a bit of an experience, you effectively go and pee in the corner of the bar! Karaoke seems to be the thing on a Friday night - not saying it was great but people seemed to be enjoying themselves which in turn helps create a decent atmosphere.

Called in here after the The Sir Ralph Abercromby on our manchester pub crawl on Saturday. As we were all real ale drinkers, we were hopeing to find a large selection of fine real ales, as the pub is massive. we got to the bar and all they had on was Theakstons. It didnt tase nice as we all agreed. The pub itself is very old fashened and a nice layout but it needs some TLC. It seems they just concentrate on keg lagers / bitters.
Karaoke advertised outside at weekends, thats not my cup of tea. but nevermind. The staff could of been a bit more chatty and they could of smiled a bit more but you cant have everything..... Next pub

The landlord of this pub ruined my friends reception. It advertises a a free function room but you have to order the buffet from them. @7.50 per head, they provided a few stale sandwiches with hardly any filling, some pork pies and some horrible looking chicken drumsticks! The family had to go out to the supermarket to buy food for the guests. The manager/landlord wasnt interested in our complaint and didnt care that the bride was in tears. Total cost 280 for no more than 30.00 food. DISGRACEFUL!

Agree with Bigaudio. Staff not v friendly. Only interested in regulars, it seemed. The gents upstairs was a toilet in a tiny room with not even a sink to wash your hands! Isn't that illegal? Good job I only needed a piss.

Interesting old fashioned pub with nice quirky lay-out and decent range of beers. Pretty quiet when we went; staff lacked a bit of charm

Ye gods, avoid at all costs, especially on a Friday which turns out to be a really bad karaoke night now.

The Old Nag's Head used to be a really great pub; nice, clean and airy but with an almost intimate atmosphere, beer well kept, friendly staff. As someone mentioned in an earlier review, "a hidden gem". Now, it wouldn't be amiss to be used on the TV show "Shameless".

On our first visit in a while, we were confronted by the worlds largest gathering of huge-bellied out-of-tune karaoke blokes. The beer was rank in the extreme (even the spirits, which my wife was drinking, were "off", the Theakstons was like vinegar, etc), the place had a really gross old sweat funk about it, and I've never ever been to a pub where the karaoke didn't only take over the main bar but was even piped into the snig via a badly tuned flat screen TV so you couldn't even have a conversation.

The staff made you feel like you were getting in the way, manky glasses, manky floors, manky tables. If the HSE went in on a flash inspection, I reckon it'd be closed on the spot.

Needless to say, we weren't in there long and won't be going back in a rush.

Back street pub with entrances from both ends onto different streets. It's ostensibly reasonably traditional, with one long L-shaped room hugging the bar. Drinking booths and split levels feature along the side of the long part of the L, whilst the corner has a stove fire but is really pretty spartan. The pub has a pleasant amount of dark mahogany panelling and green leather seating that give it a good traditional feel, and it is relatively unspoilt. . Sky sports is shown.

Only Theakstons's Old Peculiar and Old Speckled Hen on my last visit, I've also seen Black Sheep in here. Hen was good but very expensive for oop north at 3.
It's usually quite busy and it features such blandishments as karaoke and games machines that make me feel it belongs more in the category of circuit pub than back street boozer- a feeling reinforced by the limited beer range. That said, I do like the place and find myself returning. Not one of Manchester's must visit pubs by any stretch but you could do worse than find yourself in here.

This is an absolutly fab old traditional pub that has that comunity feel about it, as well as this it houses four pool tables and a massive function room!! the best time to go is on a friday or saturday, last time i went i nearly weed myself laughing at the really bad singers that top bannana tony has up singing "dead, dead, dead, dead, good" is one of d.j tony's many catch phrases!! if you've never been put it on your to do list its an absolutly brilliant night.

This long, narrow pub runs the length of a block with entrances on two streets. There are drinking booths to the right as you make your way towards the bar, which is through an arch at the back (or is it the front?) of the pub. A karaoke session was taking place while we were there, with people deliberately murdering good songs. Hilarious. Not. Two handpumps but the Old Speckled Hen clip was turned around. I had a pint of Theakston's Best which was distinctly average and that had it's clip turned around before we left.

Slightly hidden away up a side street just off Deansgate, this pub doesnt get the Deansgate crawl lads and lassies in, which is a serious advantage. Its a long thin pub with lots of old wood, cosy alcoves and old paintings all over the walls. Theres also a roof terrace which was being well used on Saturday when it was sunny. It has two handpumps but only one was being used, which is often the case in here, it was serving Old Speckled Hen. I had a pint of this which was pretty average. Its a lovely old pub but the beer selection and quality always leaves something to be desired. Its OK to call in for one.

Visited this pub Wednesday 8th April 2009. Highly recommended feels like an old City of London Boozer. Good selection of newspapers at the bar. I would say it is hidden gem. Good old fashioned atmosphere...

The bar has two sides and a seating area at the front.

Great Karaoke nights on Fri and Sat night from about 8, drinks about average for the city centre location. Service wasnt too bad also, few nice looking barmaids so worth a look !!!

This was the `school pub`...as a youth....Half the 5th years & 6th formers of 20 summers & 38 winters ago (this is Manchester!)learnt to play pool upstairs at the Nags......Its gone down & up again since..I still think it has the air of a `local`in the centre of town...which isn`t bad at all....Used to hammer the strongbow in here.

This is a great pub. When you are sick of the trendy bars that there is such an abundance of these days, it is heartening that the traditional english pub has not been forgotten! Greart food, Wonderful atmosphere, music to suit all tastes and oh yes, the barstaff have to be some of the most attractive in Manchester!!! Give it a go

An amazing local, big changes with the new managment, beer became more expensive and there seems to be a lot of yuppies but at least now it's open at the weekend - oh yeah- the barmaid is gorgeous!!

Jukebox is great, food is delicious, has a great feeling about the place and to top it all.... it has pool tables upstairs. Something that is hard to find in a Manchester pub.
