The ale was okay but unfortunately although now called the Plough it's still in Taunton.

Now called the Plough and it's very open - you'll not find a finer pint of cider or real ale in the entire town. Normally rammed solid on a Friday/Saturday night so get there early to avoid being stood up - not that it's a bad thing - all night! Would especially encourage all to have a pint or 2 of Janets Jungle Juice - a sure fire way to crave a roast dinner the following day - AWESOME!

I dunno chopin, when I was here I had excellent cider in the company of some amenable locals. It appeared difficult though to see what ales were on given the stillage arrangement. Still, the best in Taunton, don't waste your energy walking any further down from the station.

Perfectly good pub but why do they have coolers on the real ale barrels in December making the drink to cold and lifeless.
Will go there again but only when the beer and weather warm up

The best pub in Taunton!!!!!!
|
Friendly atmosphere and quirky bar serice. Fine pair of local ales from the cask on the bar and an excellent range of 6 pies served with mash and mushy peas. I would have preferred a smoke-free approach to the pub rather than enterring for an external corridor filled with smokers. Once inside, however, we were delighted.

This pub is now called The Plough, and has been open for about 3 months, great pub, great food, and a Landlady who keeps her regulars happy with decent local ales and ciders and fantastic hospitably...long may it continue!...
|
Seems to have become the preferred watering hole for all of the one time regulars of the now defunct Navy & military.
|
Good customers were leaving the other day because of a few drunks allowed to stay and swear relentlessly at the bar, be a shame if they take over as the pub, food and landlady are all very nice.
|
This pub is now called The Plough Inn, and I just popped in there as I had two hours to wait at Taunton train station. I liked it, and didn't realise it had only been open for a month or so as it seemed to be quite settled. Four decent local ales and a nice atmosphere, as well as a few drunken scousers.

Popped in for first time on sunday to see how it had changes since HL's. Beer out of cask was good , service was good, music was irritating jazz crap and clientele was rather locally n chavvy, 6/10

I feel kind of sorry for the young girl (Pillow? strange name!) She has obviously put in a lot of effort into the place, but runnibg a pub needs more than that. Trying to be eveything for everybody, the result of which will mean being nothing to nobody. She needs to set her standards and keep to them rather than pandering to all and sundrie.
|
Excellent new pub in Taunton, just what the town needs after so many other places closing or being so bad you wouldnt want to frequent them. Hope that the standard can be maintained, congratulations to the new owners, great job.

Has the dust settled yet what kind of pub this is going to be? When I was in a couple of weeks ago the mix of customers seemed a bit unsettled and the entire spectrum of drinker was present. That's a good thing of course, but will such diversity be maintained over time?
They had 6? traditional ciders available, but priced too high for the stereotypical cider drinker. They also had 4 local ales on.
The service was spot on. I'm still admiring how well a barman handled a difficult customer.
I'm giving this pub a good rating for now.

The Plough has been open now for about 3 weeks, and as the last poster said its possibly the BEST pub in Taunton. Great beer and good food served in a warm atmos. How the owner is going to keep up being open all day every day i don't know, but i hope it lasts. Would be good to have a guest beer in for a week poss Sharps DOOMBAR along with the local Cotleigh and Taunton Real Ales. Still not to sure about the huge front expanse of glass, still abit like a gold fish bowl. The cider seems to atract the dodgy clientele and groups of the local youths, but overall great to see a decent pub back in Taunton...just The Plough and The Racehorse.

I enjoyed the old Harpoons but now it is the Plough I think it is a vast improvement. More room, more atmosphere, cleaner and less pebbledash bar look. There seems to be a bit of a contradiction in some of the criticisms I have read e.g If corderoy wearing Camra beer bores like it then surely the beer is kept well.
If there is a better pub in taunton I will not only eat two of my hats but will eat the hat of the person who can find one.

Great new pub, about time to, after 2 year's closed having drunk there under two landlords John&Sonia and then Simon&Dawn its great to have the LOCAL back. Willow the new landlady has made a great job of doing up the place its bright, poss to bright lighting needs turning down and blinds putting up at the windows as its a bit of a fish bowl at the moment, good use of space. The beer is good, good choice of local beers Cotleigh and Taunton's own Taunton Ale and six local ciders... as the last reviewer said not the best way to keep beer on the bar in casks seeing they have a perfectcally good celler out the back. Food is on the way....Its great to have it back!!

Newly reopened and under its old name: the plough. Considering the odd floor plan of the place, they've done a nice job with the layout, and the jazz being played made a nice change from the usual pop.
They've fallen into the latest trend of putting the casks on stillages behind the bar. At least they've got chillers, but its not the best way to serve beer. Alright if its a beer tent at a garden fete, but pointless when a chilled cellar is available. The ales all seemed to be over conditioned (stale) which is strange on the first day of opening. If they can't get it right then I doubt they ever will. Still, the corderoy wearing camra beer bores seemed to be enjoying things.
No food yet available but suggestion of food to come soon. Meanwhile they have crisps at 1.00 per packet. Yes the 1.00 bag of crisps has now reached Taunton. Might give them a while to settle down before trying it again.

Re-opening today!

Walked past here the other day and saw signs of activity within. Watch this space (but don't hold your breath)

Estates agents sign saying "SOLD" has now been removed and replaced by one saying "FOR SALE".

Estate agent's sign in the window says that this pub has been sold. Don't know if it will remain a pub or not. Watch this space.

CLOSED DOWN?

This pub now appears to be closed

The great news is that this pub is for sale (again). Lets hope that the buyer will make a better job of running it than the last one. Mind you, if he pays anything like the asking price he'll be an idiot, so the chances aren't good.
|
I just can't believe that this pub is in the good pub / beer guide. I'm sure,( but haven't tested) that the beer is more palatable after it's been drunk than before. It's certainly less cloudy

I stoped using this pub some time ago when the service and quality became unbearably poor. I was forced to return in order to meet someone ther and guess what: its even worse now than before.

This pub used to offer a welcome to an eclectic mix of clientel. However due to a change of ownership things have gone downhill. Both the service and the beer can best be discribed as turbid. It is not unusual for the barstaff to keep the customers waiting while they (the bar staff) finish their supper. The quiz on sunday nights is quite a revelation as the question master himself frequently gets the answers wrong. Used to be worth a visit, not any more.
