user reviews of the Bulstrode, Hounslow

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I was walking past here last night when I noticed that it had reopened following the recent fire.
I decided to venture in only to be met by as overwhelming stench of fresh paint.
The place needs to be given a good airing out!!
There are 2 hand pulls on the bar but both had the clips for the dreaded Doom Bar so I turned and walked out.
I do not plan to return any time soon.

What happened to this place? The staff are rude and the people who go in the place are just thugs.

I'm too scared to even walk into the pub, let alone bring my family in there.
Don't care about pub prices, the place is shabby, unclean and unfriendly. And last time i ate in there i got a very bad stomach.

Obviously the people who enter that place now just care about the drink and the price off it so they can get drunk and to me thats trouble.

I think the regulars feel the same. As they have been pushed out of a nice pub, where they can have a drink with the locals.

Great atmosphere, well worth a visit!

A reliable source tells me the extra charges at week-ends no longer apply
bjbrummiejohn - 15 Dec 2008 12:43
Wait for it..credit crunch..fuel..food..etc so we go to the pub to relax after a hard weeks graft and what do we get....RIPPED OFF thats what!!!!!!!!!!!
This place has decided that on Fri/Sat evenings to put up their prices by over 20%
A pint of Fosters is up from a resonable 2.60 a pint to a massive 3.20 a whopping 60p.....GIVE IT A MISS
Go to Yatess down the road where at the same time (Fri/Sat after 5.00) you can get a pint of Heininken for 1.99!!!!!!!

Oh i forgot to mention the function room upstairs is good to for small weddings, family gatherings...i had my sons christening in there going back 4 years now and it was a lovely spread....

Over the past 10 years i have been going to this pub on and off (most recently more on then off). It reallly has improved greatly.

The staff are friendly and its more family orientated during the day which is great for us young mums with children. The food menu is fabulous, a mixture of English n your typical roast which is scrummy and then some days you have the opportunity of getting a curry....currys could be improved a little though...

I think the new owners that have taken it over have done a great job and the staff aren't appreciated enough....

And then in the evenings you have disco or live entertainment n they play all the sports, footie, cricket, golf, etc...which is ideal for the guys....

Iv notest that there isn't much trouble anymore either,, they've got the right kind of people in there, all kinds of age groups from familys, 20+, 30+, 40+ even up to 60....i mean what is a pub without a few of the oldies in to have a chat to about the good old days.....

It could do with a few more specials on drinks....n the outside flags could do with some new ones.....last time i went in they was decorating n the colours look lovely....could do with a lick of paint on the outside and the beer garden needs improving abit maybe put a cover aswell and some heaters outside for the smokers.....

Anyhow you don't exactly want to turn a pub into a yates do you as then i know alot of people that would turn there backs on the pub then....i for one do not even step inside yates as its too loud, too full of kids and people trying to get off with each other...and you have to think about the neighbours also....

A pub is were u can hang with friends, work colleagues, mates and family and thats exactly what the bulstrode is....

well done to the staff, n i'll be in soon for another drink and a good slap up meal.....

About a year ago, this pub was a great pub to go to.
It had everything, good beers, good staff, and good management. A year on its seriously gone down hill.

It has been taken over by ppl who dont have a clue how to run a pub. They have managers who have really turned this place into an old peoples home. Its always empty now, where as a year back it had familiar faces and you got that family feel, and was incredibly busy.

On weekends they have 2 bouncers outside, even when its never busy, its a shame to see what they have done to this lovely pub. The locals and regulars have started to turn there back on this pub, simply because of the owner and managements bad attitude. Taking over the pub has simply gone to their heads, especially the younger brothers.

They have gone for indian cuisine in this pub, which is terrible, every dish in there is over priced and the quality of food is simply not there, no flavour at all. The pub just down the same road called Black Horse serves real Indian cuisine, quality and quantity.

The only plus point would be the hard working staff they have there, they always greet you with a smile and its a shame that there service is overlooked by the bad attitudes of the managements and owners.

My advise for the 8 till late brothers, stick to supermarkets, and for the managers, find a pub in some sort of village where you can serve ppl more your own age group. Stop turning a busy town centre pub into a old pensioners home.

I visited this pub on a Thursday afternoon a couple of weeks ago and didnt find it to be a great pub. Theres nothing really wrong with it. I just didnt like the layout or the location.
Strongers - 2 Oct 2007 16:37
Why have a juke box in a pub when you have a dj playing crap on the most popular nights of the week!!

The juke box has more variety, the dj's kill the atmosphere and as for atoilet attendent that keeps mopping the floor where you are trying to urinate, well!!

My rating of this place is going down.....rapidly.

Krishan, please stop getting truthful comments removed from this site about the pub, the website is so people can put a comment whether good or bad about the place, you must stop running the place as if it was a shop, otherwise you will lose customers!!

Generally Cheap Drinks, not much on the real ale front mind due,7/10
fat_beer_badger - 18 Jun 2007 11:36
This pub hopefully will continue to achieve the high standards it set out in the first instance. Its looking good, however, it must concentrate on maintaining the high standards i.e. a nice place to have a pee, get rid of the arseholes and make sure they do not return, clean tables et al.

A dress code is over the top for this boozer, however, the catchment area is such that it requires close monitoring

Importantly, staff good and attentive, also beer good. Why should'nt the good people living and travelling through Hounslow not enjoy a quiet pint and a bite to eat in nice surroundings.
MOREDRINK - 12 Mar 2007 21:57
We have pics of Matt & Mel. (lost touch though). There was Carl (long hair) and Logan (Mad French Guy)
Managers were Gordon & Margaret.

Hi everyone, just wondered if anybody remembered management/workers of about eight years ago (summer 1999). I was in town that summer, and visited the Bulstrode quite often. The food was spotty, but I remember some great staff. There was a large gentleman named Tom who managed the place, a candadian couple, Matt and Mel, and, I think, I welshman and serbian couple, Steve and Silvie. Anyway, enjoyed those afternoons.
publover987 - 28 Feb 2007 18:00
Since being taken over, the pub has completely turned around. The new Indian menu is fantastic, the service has improved as has the number of beers etc on offer.

One complaint, the extractor fans don't appear to work even as a smoker I struggled to breath!
lilaclover - 23 Feb 2007 18:29
Good pub - went there to meet a mate, ended up watching the US Open, surprised to see so many people glued to it.

Beer was good, service good, fellow behind the bar was friendly. Given the area, this place is a bit of a gem. Well worth a visit if the tubes are fecked as usual.
ye73812 - 17 Oct 2006 23:06
Not bad since done up. Recommend the Sunday lunch however if you plan on eating here during the week especially at lunch time be prepared to wait a long time for your food! Also they don't do coke only pepsi which is not the same with a bacardi! Recommended for the sunday lunch and a quick drink before getting the tube into London!!
anonymous - 3 Sep 2006 22:42
we went to lunch the other day and waited 45mins for a jacket potato, it was cold and i sent it back, along with the others on the table. we will not be eating in here again.
anonymous - 6 Jun 2006 15:23
The do nice dinners here, but I'm not too sure about anything else, I found the staff very ignorant and unprofessional.

Avoid on football nights. You will get wet!
Succulent_Chicken - 6 Jun 2006 11:45
Was absolutely packed during yesterday Champions League Final, unfortunately most of the clientele were Barcelona fans (or incredibly Anti-Arsenal!)Traitors!! Cheer on the English team, FFS!!

Aside, from the mob - the service was efficient and friendly - although the (blonde) barmaid had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for some fresh ice! (I don't like the frozen stuff) ;D
CheekyShepherd - 18 May 2006 17:26
It's been vastly improved since Kevin took over. Good on you Kev.

I still won't come here out of habit, but if i'm passing by I'll pop in for a quick one.
CheekyShepherd - 27 Dec 2005 12:29
Wow, massive improvement.. best pub in Hounslow in my opinion. great food, quick service and friendly staff.. and no shortage of nice men that's for sure. 10/10 :)
anonymous - 27 Apr 2005 19:51
Closed for refurbishment when I walked past the other day.
anne - 6 Feb 2005 19:52
This is not a good pub, sorry Cindy, staff praise does not count.

In a particularly grim area of Hounslow, inside is smokey hell, outside is crime hell.
Avoid like the Plague.
TheGP - 6 Sep 2004 13:44
The Bully has been through several management changes in the last 6 months, but now with a cheap new look and a new manager it's not that bad. The staff are friendly and recently the prices came down and food is now served all day. So give it another go it has improved!
Cindy - 27 May 2004 10:48
This pub is alright. Barely changed in 10 years, nice beer garden, decent decor etc... But just alright you understand.
Good for: Hot summer nights
James - 26 Nov 2003 14:34
Hallo to all the locals there at Bulstrode. Are you missing us yet? Here in Australia now, pints have never tasted so different. Theres nothing quite like a pint with the locals.
Fair enough the Bully might not be the greatest pub around, but its what you all make it. If you dont like it, why drink there? Dont worry, well be back next year. And if you want to find us, well be sitting by the bar just like the rest of you!
kam - 26 Oct 2003 11:08
I lived in hounslow central about 2 years ago, the Bulstrode was an ok pub but things seem to have changed, i met a friend there today and was disgusted to say the least.
First of all we wanted food but no sorry, not between 2 and 5,so we decided to sit outside as it was a nice day, we sat as far away from the pub as possible and only went near for more warm guiness and weak jd and coke, take this for example, i went into the pub for more drink, she poured me a lousy jd so i asked for a splash of coke and the words from the mouth of the manager were "that will be a extra 30 pence or do you want more ice",,(em how much do you sell the ice for), their were only a few things that were good about this pub,,,1.the select company i was sitting with. 2.watching nice women leave the underground station(i beieve they were heading for the yates pub round the corner). and finally 3. the kebab shop across the road which sell food ALL day.
furrydice - 11 Aug 2003 20:57
just been in to this excuse for a pub, there is no lock on the gents lavatory door also lots of tiles missing in there. heard a lady phone up her work to say she was going to be late back from lunch as her meal (ordered 20 minutes earlier) had yet to arrive, this i find rather peculiar as there wasn't more than 5 people in the place! i know scottish and newcastle are selling off all there pubs this year, but come on s&n do us a favour look after your customers whilst you still have them. i find it quite ironic that 5 minutes walk down the road there is a yates wine lodge where you can get carling at 1.50 a pint sunday to thursday, john smiths 1.30 all day every day whilst back at the bully fostersd is 2.36.
wild thing - 11 Aug 2003 15:10
This pub was good once upon a time, but as we know most fairy tales are unrealistic. I know pub gossip is rife, I was most upset to learn first hand how bad it is, and more annoyed to learn that the landlady was also having her say on the matter.
Also I fully agree with the comment regarding getting a perm cook, might curve the high turn over of barstaff. Also there are speakers outside in the gardens and they are not connected which is a real shame, with such lovely weather who wants to be couped up inside? Not Me!!
Bulstrode Patron - 4 Aug 2003 17:10
times change..out with the old and in with the new...if you don't like it don't go there
A happy customer - 1 Aug 2003 18:33
whats to be jealous about, and the reason everyone is moaning is because they have been loyal regulars for years and know what the pub was like, friendly with good atmosphere, there are only a handfull of locals left, surely that speaks for itself.
pubz - 31 Jul 2003 19:49
Its one of the best pubs in Hounslow, its even had a recent refurb. Its got a taxi rank right across the road for when you've had one two many. I give it 10/10, well done Rita. I dont know why everyone is moaning so much, it must be jealousy!!
A happy customer - 29 Jul 2003 16:18
i've been going to the bully for six years now,and see about 500 staff members come and go,a few managers and i must say the current sucks, nothing works in favour of the local punter,it's highland rules, well hello wake up and smell the tea, this is London,ENGLAND,LETS HAVE SOME FUN.
paul thompson - 27 Jul 2003 12:37
scottish and newcastle really need to monitor this pubs growth over the past year,i'll bet turnover is down by half, die hard locals for twenty years now drink at the moon under water, and thats sad.
pubz - 27 Jul 2003 12:32
not being funny, but if you used your entertainment budget and had entertainment that would be a start. also, why don't you advertise for a full time kitchen hand who realises they are there just to work the kitchen. then perhaps you won't get through so many bar staff that you force to work in the kitchen when that is'nt the job they applied for?

wild thing - 27 Jul 2003 12:32
great pub for locals but very expensive for the quality you get
steen - 23 Jul 2003 21:45
the pub needs a younger manageress or couple, the patrons are an average age of about thirty, the guv is over sixty and without any real interest,a great pity cos has alot of potential.
pubz - 23 Jul 2003 21:29
lots of troggers here - beer taste like shite - food great though! A real good head chef
mick - 15 Jun 2003 15:56
