user reviews of the Volunteer Inn, Chipping Campden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very disappointing range (if that's the word) of ales, both with enormous carbon footprints. All the locals seem to be lager drinkers. Maybe some might be persuaded to try a decent local ale if one were on the bar.

Only 2 beers on a busy Friday Night. Very much a locals bar. Beers were Sharps Doombar which I avoided and Robinsons Dizzy Blonde. A half was ok but why nothing locally brewed?

The Volunteer Arms is one of the more basic pubs in Chipping Campden, tucked down one end of town, but don't let that stop you coming here. This is a good down-to-earth one room stone floor pub serving 1 real ale, "Volunteer Ale", brewed elsewhere, and with friendly bar staff and locals. Good for a few pints at good prices.

You wouldn't think The Indian restaurant behind the bar, the Maharaja, would be up to much but you couldn't be more wrong. The food is really very tasty with good spicing in almost every dish I tried. The starters were quite large and the unusual Keema Balti (curried minced lamb) was that tasty, what I couldn't finish I took back and ate for dinner the next night. Good food without overdoing the garlic. My usual guide to how good a restaurant is, the quality of its vegetable dishes, was spot on here - the Bhindi (Okra) was fresh and not overcooked as it always seems to be. Definitely worth a visit for the food - don't be put off by its location.

Didn't go here but ordered a takeaway from the attached Indian restaurant during my recent stay in Chipping Campden. Excellent food.

Stayed here for one night last month and it's grand. Room was functional but cheap and the beer/clientele were lovely.

Make sure you have a curry in the attached restaurant. I was a bit dubious, but man alive it was nice.

We stayed overnight here and although the pub is a bit basic it was very friendly and well priced. The local ale not impressive though. The accommodation was fine and cheap, and the meal in the Indian restaurant attached was great - nice food, big portions, Cobra at 2.50 a pint, and very friendly. Breakfast was OK. Recommend for a cheap stay and good curry.

Since the last review in 2006 a lot must have happened. The pub is basic and run down. It still serves a fair pint but doesn't do food. When we visited (14 of us on a Saturday lunchtime) the few locals were a sorry bunch. It is said to have a good Indian restaurant and even good accommodation but I wonder if the reviews are out of date? The restaurant was closed. As a pub it was very poor. We had one drink and left.

I first visited this place 10 years ago and have revisited on several occasions since, most recently in May this year. It remains a solid family-run local, with an excellent array of cask ales, mainly sourced from local microbreweries, all well-kept, and a pleasant, airy convivial atmosphere with a mix of Campden folk and visitors. Friendly staff add to the experience. I haven't eaten here for 5 years, but the food certainly was decent then as I assume it it now.
Certainly the best all-round boozer in the town and well worth a visit if you're in the area.

As an American on my honeymoon, I felt very welcome in this Chipping Campden local. As you might expect from the name, there were many older gentlemen drinking here, no doubt many of them war vets. Had a good chat with a nice chap who founded the North Cotswold Brewery. At his suggestion I had a tasty Mayfair stout. Good time, great place.
