An extensive pub at the end of the high street, this has a traditional feel to it and is somewhat less food focussed than some of the other pubs around.
There are two bars, each with their own separate entrance. The right hand bar which is known as the Ships Bar has parquet wood flooring and is designed to attract a younger clientele with rather loud music and a pool table. The Lounge Bar to the left is all together much cosier with carpeting on the floor, beams on the ceiling, white plasterwork on the walls and some wood panelling lower down. There was a brick fireplace off to the left and plenty of horse brasses around as well as old black and white pictures of the pub and the town in days gone by and some more modern artwork that was for sale. A restaurant area was further off to the left although we didnt investigate this.
There is a small patio area next to the pub on the right, although it doesnt have quite the same outlook to the estuary as some of the other venues nearby. Usefully there is a serving hatch from here directly in to the bar, although on the afternoon of our visit this was unfortunately not in use.
Beers on tap were Youngs Special, Otter Ale, Otter Bitter and Courage Best. Ciders were Symonds Founders Reserve and Westons Old Rosie.

Good selection of beer and cider - I went for the Westons Old Rosie (cider) good stuff but strong 7%! Food was normal pub grub and eneviable oven ready chips. The staff were friendly enough but the locals a bit hostile - whinging that it was more like restaurant than a pub. Well keep it as just a pub and you'd have one less drinking hole in Salcombe

The Fortesque Inn is a nice white fronted pub tucked away in a quieter back street of Salcombe but still only a short distance from the sea. Fairly old place dating back allegedly to the early 18th century and one of the two aforementioned bars used to be stables apparently. I chose the olde style original bar with all its memorabilia and photographs and found it a very pleasant place for a pint , which was a very decent pint of Otter Ale.

Food been going downhill for years. Used to eat there several times during fortnights holiday, this year ate there once. Quantity and quality down year on year, prices rise. Real ale kept well. Don't use lounge, too cramped, food orientated, full of rich yachting types devoid of manners.

Went one Friday night a few weeks ago and it was heaving (live band playing). Always worth a visit for a few beers when in Salcombe.

Late September and still very crowded in the (old) bar in the early evening. Good selection of well kept beers - but wasn't a comfortable place to drink - seating/tables generally reserved for food and no obvious place to stand without being in the way.

A superb pub and serves excellent food. Atmosphere is good aswell.

This [pub is Salcombe's solid and reliable all-rounder.
It has a lively "young" bar with pool table and jukebox, a sedate "older" bar with carpet and plenty of seating, a good restaurant, and a suntrap of a beer garden.
I'm a grockle who's been drinking here for about 15 years and it's barely changed in that time, but there's no real need. It does what it sets to do, and does it well.

Like the idea of 2 bars. The Otter in both was absolutely cracking. Food looked good although at the top end price wise for pretty standard pub food but can't really cooment as I didn't eat here. Thought the locals were friendly in both sides. Even on a Sat night in the younger right hand bar was well run with no-one being out of order.

Well-known Salcombe pub at one end of the main strip. Comprised of two bars, ye olde style original bar and a 'modern' bar next door.
Ye olde bar comes complete with obnoxious old buggers who spit bile at the tourists, all the while forgetting exactly where the town gets all it's money from! Food pretty good though and fair choice of drinks.
'Modern' bar is an inexpensively outfitted venue for the usual teenage hoorays from the Home Counties to start getting tanked up in before heading off to Fusions. Has table football and pool table with outside area.
Seating is a premium throughout unless you're eating. As with all Salcombe pubs it's very busy during holidays.
