The Artichoke is most definitely CLOSED and is now the Elstree Shtiebel - a Jewish religious learning centre.

The Italian didn't last long and the building is now boarded up.

Old Tommy would be mighty upset to see a flag of one of the Axis powers defiantly fluttering over his once beloved local.

This pub is now an italian restuarant. I was there for dinner last night & i would strongly suggest that no-one sets foot in this establishment unless they are fond of bland, microwaved food. The lasagne was quite tastless & appeared to have been recently coaxed out of it's plastic container. A plate of pasta & supposedly shiitake mushrooms, (there were 6 dubious looking dark pieces) had less punch than a pot noodle. A chicken dish was returned after it gave of a pungent fishy aroma & taste. This was blamed on the parmesan cheese placed on top by my dinner guest. A replacement was offered but the distinct waft of fish accompanied it yet again. The dish went uneaten.
We should have realised that our dining experience would not go smoothly, as when we entered, the first thing that caught my gaze were the paper tablecloths & the complete lack of other customers.
Give this place a very wide berth & if you're in the area then two very good alternatives are Prezzo & Va Pensiero, both in Radlett.

Decent pubs in Elstree and Borehamwood are like gold dust, and the Artichoke is one of the few good ones. It's nothing special, mind, but the barstaff do a good job and food is served at lunchtimes. At present the beers are an unexciting Bass and Greene King IPA.
By the way, when I was visiting here on Thursday evening one of the local wags told rather a good joke:-
"I went to the opticians today, and guess who I bumped into?"
"Who?"
"Everybody!"
Well, it made me laugh.

Spacious pub, well-stocked bar. My pint of Old Speckled Hen was fine and went down a treat. This is probably the best pub in Elstree, tho' there's not much competition.
