user reviews of the Purley Arms, South Croydon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The bar staff seem weary of new custom here (not particularly friendly), and I can smell a clique amongst the punters. Better of going to a centre like Purley or Croydon where you get a larger pool of people. On the beer front, one positive is they always have about 2-3 draft bitters on tap. For me it's a one pint and of situation.

Lovespuds sums this pub up succinctly. I might add that there is a range of slightly more unusual ales. A dimmer on some of the lights might improve the atmosphere but, hey, whose worrying about such a small thing when overall it's a "Super little boozer".

Super little boozer.

Staff are attentive, welcoming and friendly, as are the patrons.

Well normally the Crown &Sceptre but I do not think it would be your taste as MORONS are not allowed.

SLERPY tell us where you drink in Croydon

so we don't make the mistake of goin in.

Over the past 2.5 years, slerpy has had over 150 reviews on BITE. A lot of these were accurate and/or concise.

Unfortunately, he has know shown his true, insensitive and pathetic nature - which the two previous reviewers have very clearly pointed out.

Even after Slerpy has been made aware of the Landlady's serious illness and demise, he still talks about a scuffy pub exterior (which the pub hasn't and wasn't even mentioned in his August post). When Slerpy is dying, will he worry about the exterior of his business - or concentrate on things more important ? Perhaps not the latter; as his brain seems to have failed already. But I'm sure the Landlord's family (and regulars) appreciate his views.

And I would suggest that having a dying wife may distract one from delivering the aesthetic you demand.

Of course, all our views of all our pubs are ultimately subjective.

My point is that, once in a while, it may be prudent to look beyond the facade - literal and metaphorical.

Grovetown, not the type of news that anyone likes to hear but my comments were honestly meant. The outside could NOT be scruffier, this is NOT a pub that attracts my custom.

Was in here yesterday have started drinking here more often due to a friend of mine starting to drink here. I live in purley and if it is a choice between the pubs there or the purley arms I would choose the purley arms every time.
Roasts on a Sunday, has a dart board, good banter when the football is on was in yesterday for Chelsea v Man u great banter and then also the ryder cup just chating to the locals was a pleasure.
This pub is great, a proper pub in an area where the proper pubs are dropping like flys!

The 'slide' - as Slerpy puts it - may have been related, if it were that accurate, to the landlords John and Teresa being distracted by her being terminally ill.

Still Slerpy: rest easy - Teresa died last week at the ripe old age of 46.

So at least John can now get back to giving the pub his full attention just for you.

The next door Red Deer is enjoying a resurgence, it is clearly affecting "The Purley " as it is empty whenever I drive by.My money is on closure ,probably sometime soon. This will be a pity as the great Dave Curtly- Lawrence worked miracles here not many years ago.The days of lunch and dinner for a penny, regular beer Festivals and the best beer in Croydon have sadly gone.Still I am fortunate in that I still see Dave, the man who has forgotten more about running a pub than most learn in a lifetime.

Oh dear ! A pub on the slide, the outside decor is tired, the beer is poor . Hopeless !
slerpy - 17 Apr 2008 16:14
A good, down to earth, no frills pub, with well kept beers at good prices. Usually have a guest ale on alongside a reliable pint of Directors and GK IPA (who drinks muck like that?). It is a bit of a locals pub, but it's not intimidating, the worst that will happen is taht they'll serve a regular even though you've been waiting longer.
Kelvins_Ferret - 15 Jan 2008 13:06
gets better everytime i go a mixed crowd but no trouble
stella4me - 6 Dec 2007 14:58
I often have an early evening pint in here. well kept real ale at sensible prices. Friendly staff.

Another pub in Purley Oaks whose fortunes seem to undulate like a tired old rollercoaster. After a decorative refreshment that left it looking exactly as it had before, a relatively new management seem to have slowly restored some faith in it. The staff are friendly, the regulars a mixed crowd, real ale features, the wine is good, and the food is perfectly acceptable (and comes in generous portions). The prices are reasonable. The only downside is the wretched adherence to sport, although it's not as bad as some pubs. Even so, Mrs C and myself have often left the more 'cosy' side bar area because the big screen has come to life with unnecessary volume even though no one is actually there watching or listening to it. Oh yeah, and they have a quiz night on a Thursday, and it's open until midnight Th, Fri and Sat.

Up and coming the beer and food are of a good standard. this is a pheonix that has risen from the ashes.

A locals pub; has gone through many management changes over the past few years. Seems to be on the up at the moment - last night was surprised to find well kept Harvey's Sussex Best on tap, alongside Green King IPA and Courage Directors. Will visit more often if this quality is maintained.

Still isn't quite as nice as the Crown and Sceptre for atmosphere, but deserves to be supported more by lovers of proper beer.
