I've popped in a few times over the last few years, a while I grant you since my last visit. Much brighter and cleaner following a makeover but it mercifully hasn't lost its "proper" pub feel.
Very good ales on tap, Otter Ale is one of my favorites so I stuck to three of those, however Bass and Dartmoor Jail Ale also on.
May be it could do with a real cider too to add a little more...

A visitor to Barnstaple, and popped into Marshalls for a quick drink before dinner. First impressions were positive - it was quiet for a Saturday night, but decent enough beer.
However, part way through our drinks we noticed one of the customers sat at the bar talking to the landlady was wearing an English Defence League top, with some anti-muslim comments on it. Clearly, the landlady did not have a problem with this individual being in the pub, but we did. We will never return.

Plain, old-fashioned boozer with good beer, cheery locals and excellent service. Three real ales including a top notch pint of Bass.

First time in Barnstaple (down for a wedding). Popped in for a couple and pleased to see Otter Amber as well as Bass and 6X on handpump. Otter and Bass were in top form . Atmosphere was lively and friendly. Definitely will come back here.

Internet... DVD... Unified Germany.. GM crops... All things that have happened since i last visited this pub 25 years ago.. And to be fair the pub has had a change of wallpaper.. some newer brighter lighting.. and a smoke free atmosphere since my last visit... On informing my drinking partners daughter we were going to the Marshals we were informed it is an old persons pub... It is an old persons pub... serving good honest well kept beers and with an atmosphere that only a pub comfortable with its own identity has.. Fancy some fizzy pish... then you will find ...errr...chain pubs near by ... want a pub where you can hold a conversation ,enjoy a beer in a convivial atmosphere you'd do a lot worse than having a bash at the Marshals..

An old fashioned local's local. A hubbub of chatter greets you on entering.

Fab old style atmosphere- that bursts with energy every Sunday when they have 'live music', anything from Blues,Jazz,Funk,Soul& more. Alway's part of the local all year round gig guide & summer jazz fest as well as being in the 'good beer guide'. And now open til midnight near weekend night's. Yes it's true - they fined you if your mobile phone rings BUT they raise a few hundred pounds EVERY couple of months for local charity's which is fantastic. No one really minds it's for charity mate.

Marshals is the only pub in central Barnstaple in the 'Good Beer Guide' - yet it seems to be quite a 'locals' pub. There are fines (for charity) for using a mobile phone so remember to turn yours off (or at least keep it silent) before going in. When I visited, there appeared to be 3 beers on handpump - but only 2 pumps (one handpump had 2 clips). Possibly one of these was gravity dispense? Bass seems the regular beer, although I tried one from Archers (Archers seem to brew so many different beers that I've given up trying to remember the names of them) which was very pleasant. They do lunchtime meals if you're in Barnstaple shopping, so it's a worthwhile stop for a rest, a beer and a bite.
