user reviews of the Borough Bailiff, Knaresborough

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As mentioned by the last reviewer, this is actually called the Commercial Hotel now.
By far the biggest sam smiths in the town. 3 different areas of the pub to drink in. All quite big, there also appears to be an upstairs but I'm not sure if that gets used. Usual suspects on. I went for a dark mild at 1.34 a pint. Old plates along the walls and pictures as well. Bar maid seemed a bit ambivalent really. They had a fire in the lounge area with a guy who took it on himself to properly get it going. Locals congregated in one of the areas which I assume is the public bar. There is a food menu outside by the entrance but I didn't see anyone eating. Quite nice but the atmosphere was subdued when I came in.

If in Yorkshire you find a pub that does not announce which brewery owns it or doesn't proclaim it's a freehouse or doesn't have Black Sheep signage then it is probably a Sam Smith's pub. The Borough Bailiff is such a place in spite of being a largish and slightly upmarket inn. There are two bars, a public entered at the side and a lounge accessed through the main door off the High Street as well as a dining room at the back. It has an old and interesting interior of the sort pub designers have tried to recreate but this one is largely original, if spoilt. It attracts an older more genteel, customer in the lounge than many Knaresborough pubs. Lacklustre Old Brewery Bitter served by professional staff although not too many of them, and it's served too cold.

Wonderful place.

Sam Smiths beer that doesn't make your wallet feel ill. Rooms with differing atmospheres.

The one with the large open fire wins every time when the temperature drops.

Enjoy the beer.

Large pub very well presented throughout. Old Oak room non smoking. Traditional lounge and bar with darts and pool in the bar. Large backroom for dining with large sofas and chairs. One of the largest/best pubs in Knaresborough. Sam Smiths beer.
