Definitely a food oriented pub but clean and busy at lunchtime. Pricey but seems popular with diners. Usual range of Wadworth beers on handpump. Drinkers seem happy to remain in the bar area.
Now selling Wadworth's beers but you will need to consult your bank manager before visiting!! Expensive, trying to be up-market and not our type of bar at all. There are better value pubs in town.
expensive and overated, food mediocre. not worth visiting again for me.
Very expensive pub and with so much choice in Witney I see no reason to come back.
A small town centre pub offering real ale and good food. It has latterly become quite popular with those wishing to find a clean, pleasant place in which to eat. The interior is relatively cramped, but meals can be taken in the adjacent yard area, which has been roofed-over to form a glazed.conservatory.

Half Pub, Half Conservatory. An odd kind of layout with the toilets out in a kind of courtyard area. Seemed friendly enough and the Brakspear's was drinkable.

Smells like the lobby of a cheap hotel, which is a bit odd. Lacks the atmosphere and feel of a pub, but seemed fairly friendly. Decent selection of beer, but bloody expensive. Ulitmately, there are better beer oriented pubs in Witney, and better food-oriented ones too.

I think it is manifestly clear that the previous three comments are part of a petty vendetta that is being waged after some perceived slight over a glass of water, and while the reference to soup like "warthog snot" has givem us all a cheep laugh, the "reviews" in question bear no resemblance to the Royal Oak. This is a very popular food-orientated pub in the centre of town, the only criticism that can be made being that the beer is somewhat over-priced.
Rude staff, food was poor, cold and rather steeply priced, don't order soup unless you enjoy the slimy texture of warthog snot. They also do refuse to serve tap water (as others have mentioned) which I believe is illegal. Do not visit this pub unless you like being served by flea bitten peasants with the mange and sitting in a darkened room that smells of urine and sweat.

I visited this pub recently and had a drink and lunch. The food was poor and over-priced and - worst of all - whilst I was there, the Landlady had a standup row with a woman and her child, refusing her a drink of tap water.
I certainly wouldn't visit again.
I was there recently and was appalled to hear another customer being denied a glass of tap-water for his breast-feeding wife.
My meal tasted limp and ratty.
I won't be going again.

As far as I am aware, the Royal Oak is not a restaurant, and it serves "just drinks" to all non-dining customers. On the other hand, I can imagine that ill-mannered yobs will not be served food OR drink.
Less than average. A pub should serve just drinks to anyone who wants them.
This is not a pub! It is a restaurant and you need to book a table!
While it may well be true that drinkers are not entirely welcome at lunchtime(?), this is surely not the case in the evenings, when food is not served. In this context, it is utter b******s to claim that The Royal Oak is "just an eaterie".
just an eaterie. average beer at unforgivable prices. It seems that they are here to provide food. dont sit at a table and have a beer because you may be asked to move for diners. tap water with a meal - you must be joking - if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg you are not welcome
This is a small pub which offers real ale and good food, four real ales being available at any one time including Wychwood and Brakspear products. The Royal Oak has become quite popular with those wishing to find a clean, pleasant place in which to eat during the daytime, although during the evenings the pub becomes more of a local. The interior is relatively cramped, but the yard area has recently become a fully enclosed area, and this has effectively doubled the size of the bar.
This pub sadly suffers from being too popular and finding a space to drink on a Thurs/ Fri and Sat night can be difficult. This is a shame because the local Wychwood ale is well kept and the food is excellent.
The staff are extremely friendly and polite.
This is a great pub!

Nice Enviroment if a little pushed for space, traditional with a upmarket feel with upmarket prices to match. Has a nice courtyard area.
