Star Royal, Oxfordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
I chose this place to meet up on moving to the city and it's a decent local, although hordes of students did arrive later on in the evening - I'm no Paul Calf so don't necessarily see this as a problem. The meagre ale selection is a problem - although they did have Old Hooky on tap on the occasion of my visit. A sizeable beer garden and pool tables makes this a key part of any Cowley Road/St. Clement's pub crawl.

Great if you are a student; can grate if you are not. The beer garden is very nice on a sunny afternoon or after work. Unfortunately the real ale selection is only Greene King IPA, which may or may not be on, and drinks are expensive; but this is offset by the extensive selection of crisps. The pool tables actually have enough room all the way round, which is almost unique in Oxford. If massed students and young men with silly haircuts and ridiculously small trousers annoy you then best avoid weekend evenings as this is where they congregate.

Very disappointed with The Star: when we arrived there were no real ales on tap but only lagers; the Guinness was very grainy, and I consider myself overcharged for the two 330 ml bottles of Old Speckled Hen that came to 6 in total. We asked the grumpy barman if he'd be laying on some real ale later to which he grumblingly replied that he "may" put on a barrel of Green King IPA. In the end we didn't bother but went to the far superior Angel and Greyhound down the road instead. A large beer garden but what use is that without any beer?

i tell you what right. this is a great place to meet up. if you can put up with the students, the regulars are good people. watch out for the smelly football crew, big ears, kooky and scary eyes. all good fun. just a shame when the OU or Brookes drinking club turns up to take over. anyway. i wouldn't swap it for the world.

Decent one room pub with pool table out back. Students dominate but it does have some decent music. Good location off the Cowley Road.

I used to live next to this pub. Went in a few times, in retrospect should have gone a lot more as its perfect for students and the kind of place you don't find in the more central part of Oxford. Grungy and pubby but unmistakeably studenty, pool tables out back, and a lovely beer garden. Not far to walk at all from the main drag or even from the High St but you really feel you are out of the Oxford madding crowd when you are here. Recommended for Oxford Uni students - I think its mainly a Brookes place, so please do your duty and crowd them out.
