Well thats a shame. I always looked forward to my yearly visit! It was just never busy enough, that was the problem and I have no doubt that if another bar is its replacement, itll suffer the same fate. Either that or one of the other many bars will run out of luck. Seriously, Bexleyheath should just leave the youngster hangouts alone now.

LONG LIVE THE RAT
anonymous - 9 Sep 2007 18:24 |
The Rat and Parrot is closing down!!!!!!!sadest thing to happen.thank you for the memories
|
I've just heard this place is shutting down.....how can they do this?..it's the best pub in Bexleyheath by far.....hope fully something just as good will take it's place....RIP the Rat and Parrot....
anonymous - 6 Sep 2007 15:22 |
Last nights visit (16th June) was my first to The Rat and Parrot for probably around a year and it certainly seems like longer since Ive been on a Saturday night. Ive never had a major problem with this pub and have always enjoyed myself. It was certainly less busy than I remembered it did alter the atmosphere as the evening progressed. The barmaid told me it was due to the Amadeus bus, yet I think the ever-increasing number of music bars in the area is more of a factor. The bouncers here are seemingly friendlier than in some other establishments, though the bulletproof vests are obviously a worry. All in all though, I certainly find here more appealing than Affinity etc. One more thing. As others here have clearly stated, if you dont like the venue, than dont go. Some reviewers here seem to constantly repeat themselves unnecessarily in regards to their seemingly intense dislike for what happens to be in my opinion, a decent enough place for a gathering.
HTM69 - 17 Jun 2007 15:09 |
actually the best younger crowd pub in the area. music great, drinks cheap and customers a good mix well done to the management there for creating what i call a success! a++++++++++
anonymous - 13 Apr 2007 15:05 |
its people like anon 20 march that really get on my nerves. i'm not gonna deny that this place has had a very bad history but come on! it was about 4/5 years ago and history!! its now a non trouble pub with a good crowd you enjoy themselves every weekend. i know cos i go there!!
anonymous - 29 Mar 2007 02:27 |
Many myths and urban legends seem to follow the rat and parrots reputation, drive by shooting last year is just one of these. The people who don't like the place, please just don't go back, leave the place to people who want fun, have a drink and chat up the ladies.
|
This aint a pub, its a big empty space where they serve alcohol. No character, few seats, just lots of standing room so the idiot masses can be crammed in and spend their money.
|
anyone read the papers today?? To all those people who say the rat is the most violent pub in bexleyheath now better eat their words. 27% of violence from lloyds 21% from RSVP and 9% from the good old Rat!! It's about time the police did something and now it seems they have. The rat has the best staff best doormen and best range of music of the big three in Bexleyheath. i just hope the idiots from the other pubs don't come down and ruin it for us lot!
anonymous - 22 Feb 2007 01:55 |
ok.....ALWAYS over 18's.
yes?
anonymous - 19 Feb 2007 23:59 |
WHAT????? MOSTLY????
"its mostly OVER 18's going into the rat each time i have been there".
It's supposed to be an effin' public house, and, errr doesn't that mean ONLY over 18s?
anonymous - 16 Feb 2007 15:59 |
wow, someone obviously doesn't like the rat. i doubt very much that ALL the girls drink vodka and red bull. me for a start. also, if you think that only "kids" go there, then i think you need your eyes checked mate because its mostly OVER 18's going into the rat each time i have been there. see ya saturday!!
anonymous - 16 Jan 2007 22:30 |
this pub is the place to be w/ends great staff the doormen are efficient and helpfull though they still ask for i.d. and you can get the ammo bus fridays and sats and i think tuesdays so you can start at the rat and go on from there i love it.
anonymous - 11 Jan 2007 17:28 |
Great pub, great prices.Bit quiet it there at moment which is good coz all the no good chavs go to lloyds(a dive in the nicest sense)and rsvp. the doorman are vry friendly(the big guy whos been there for ever deserves a medal,a yardstick in how a doorman/bouncer should be)as are the staff.I know the pub is under new management, and he has great ideas--especially the introduction of the massive dancefloor at the back of pub. great, keep up the work rat--and one day the police, council, and other business people in the area will realise how little trouble you create
|
And to the other "anon" glad to be of service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Oh and "anon" the plastic glasses is purely a safety thing. Many major clubs/pubs in many major cities use plastic glasses. Besides at the end of the day, it's still a pint/bottle of your favourite tipple isn't it?
|
At last!! Some people who like us!! Seriously though we're gonna keep trying to give you guys a good a night as possible, which includes giving away champers (especially if you're nice to the Assistant Manager!!!!) and introducing new nights. It may not be as busy as it could be at the moment but it's nice to know some people appreciate what we're doing. By the way SELECTED DRINKS 1.50 ALL NIGHT FRIDAYS! (Had to get the plug in!!) See ya at teh weekend!!
|
we went to the rat last night and it was pukka. the doormen didn't "grunt" at us, we are all between 18 and 25 (not ur typical 14-15 year old "kid") and for your information, they probably use plastic bottles instead of glass because they might be cheaper. oh yea...thanks for my champers!! it went down a treat on my bloke ;-p
anonymous - 18 Nov 2006 22:30 |
Exactley, the rat and parrot is wicked. And for your information i am 18 and always get asked for I.D and so do all of my friends, the doorman are really friendly and the bar staff are wicked and if u don't like it DON'T BLOODY GO simple enough and your calling the doorman idiots (get a life)
|
well theres only one thing to do then....GO TO ANOTHER PUB. if u don't like rat n parrot den naff off sumwhere else.
shivs - 31 Oct 2006 16:10 |
apart from the local pissheads who blag their way in somehow on a saturday night, i don't see any problem with rat n parrot. prices r good, doormen r asking i.d. from everyone (literally) and the music is wicked. what else can you ask for on a night out in bexleyheath?
anonymous - 22 Sep 2006 14:43 |
Only go on saturdays, and i gotta say you cant go far wrong. Doesnt get silly rammo like lloyds, 3.10 double vodka red bull, no w@nkers who wanna be gangsters, just people enjoying themselves.
You also got some very tasty birds in there.
anonymous - 20 Sep 2006 21:04 |
But surely by going to lloyds and RSVP you'll encounter the same problem? We try to make sure that everyone that comes through the front door is over the age of 18 but there's always gonna be someone that gets through. When i've been out at the front door i've seen the doormen i.d. pretty much everyone who tried to get in even girls with short skirts!! It's a battle we'll never completely win but i can safetly say 99% of the people who come in are over 18. I'd love it to be 100% but that ain't never gonna happen. Sorry it ruined your night by the way. Hopefully you'll give us another go as i still believe we have the best night on a sunday.
|
Substitute the word 'quiet' for BETTER and I'm right with you mate - or should I say annoymous Bar Person/Doorman/Manager at the Rat?
anonymous - 17 Jul 2006 17:34 |
Yeah the toilets look bad but if the idiots that seem it funny to trash them got a life then they would be ok. Atmosphere of a morgue? You clearly haven't been there on a weekend night as it has a fantastic atmosphere. It's not as busy as it used to be but still a great night is guaranteed. And you seem to mock the fact that people were playing pool. We have pool tables, that's what they are there for. And if they are from Erith so what? If all the pubs barred people who you seem to look down on Bexleyheath would be a very quiet place.
anonymous - 14 Jul 2006 11:03 |
Yeah, i have been there. Its dreadful. The last time i went there were about 10 of Erith's finest playing pool and 2 girls looking bored.
Intimidating, revolting toilets and the atmosphere of a morgue.
Should be knocked down and replaced with a decent pub / nightclub.
How its got 5.2 / 10 on this website is a complete mystery.
anonymous - 13 Jul 2006 11:48 |
to all those people that slate the rat and parrot, have you actually been in there or is it the fact that you are too young to get in??? it is a great place to go, the door staff are all nice as, the bar staff couldnt be any more helpful and the management obviously work hard to try and keep all those chavs out so that we can enjoy our nights out as we do every weekend, give the place a go
anonymous - 12 Jul 2006 17:29 |
THE RAT IS RED HOT!!!!! JUS NEED TO GET RID OF THE KIDS THAT U GET IN THERE!
|
whats this rumour i've heard that it all kicked off in there after the England Paraguay game. I heard that there was a massive fight and everyone got chucked out. A few pissed up punters went to TK Maxx and trashed it.
Bit ironic that a load of chavs wearing Argos rings and chains trashes the place they buy their clothes from!
|
I went up to the Rat last Wednesday 'Indie' (sic)night, but I didn't bother going in. THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT A DOZEN PEOPLE IN THERE. Having walked the length of the broadway, apart from the bars that don't bother to open, the Rat was by far the emptiest boozer in the broadway. When you take its enormous size into account (circa 1,000 capacity?)it's just plain odd.
anonymous - 30 May 2006 11:22 |
I never fail to enjoy myself in The Rat And Parrot. I don't know if Id choose to come here on any night, other then those specified below, but that's purely a musical issue. The drinks are reasonably priced and this place is a must on Wednesdays for the indie night. The music is loud and good and I've never witnessed any real trouble. I havent been for many months, but I recall it being great here on Sunday evenings too.
HTM69 - 26 May 2006 20:24 |
Used to like going here... would always have a good night, especially on a sunday! Booze is reasonably priced, particularly the cocktails as 2 for 5.50, cant complain with that!!!
However personally my wanting to go here again any time soon has been tarnished by some dick-head (unfortunately this place does seem to attract a few) deciding to spike my drink with rohypnol. Luckily that experience didnt have a sad ending for me, as my friends noticed there was something not right and looked after me, though someone else may not be as fortunate.
I would like to point out though that this incedent is totally un-related to the staff here, who actually couldnt be more considerate of the circumstances and I know it was a customer who spiked the drink.
But I shall be staying away for a while as it is sadly some of the clientelle lets it down... it does allow in a number of idiots (such as the f**ker that spiked my drink) that are most likely barred from other pubs in the area (you can read from other comments about frequant fights starting, being why everything is served in plastic cups.. which emphasises my point). Will be going back once I feel safe to, i.e when i stop hearing so many horror stories of un-sociable customers getting out of hand.
anonymous - 22 May 2006 14:30 |
Yeh there's an Indie Night run on Wednesday by the pub manager and DJed by some of their bar staff (and chosen flirt of the week). A good night but isn't graced with that big-a-crowd. Though if you ask me that's much better, however it is a big pub and even with about 100 people in there it echoes.
I like the rat i've never had a problem with it but then i've only ever ventured there on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday night when there are Alternative Nights.
The crowd seems much nicer and you dont get many fights.
The beer prices are just normal, though recently they increased, they're not Uni prices but it's certainly not Yates prices either. (Yates if you go on a weekend are rather expensive)
The staff are really nice and the bouncers are huge, as recently commented, so yeh not many problems there.
Atmosphere is great and you can meet loadsa cool people if you're friendly enough. Seems like its only bad on the Normal/Chavvy nights... hmm ... what a suprise.
anonymous - 2 May 2006 12:19 |
i know they have a rock night on thursdays, but does anyone know if they have an indie night at all? the rock night's a bit too heavy metal for my liking. ash bee x
|
The Rat and Parrot is the best place to go on a Sunday in Bexleyheath, no question. It's not too bad on a Friday, although I agree that it can be a bit quiet on a Saturday night. As for violence, I have only seen one fight in there in over a year.
anonymous - 13 Apr 2006 11:33 |
IF you survive a Pint You're lucky.... Lost count of the amount of near fatel violence that has been there..... Just goes to prove that Bexleyheath is the Mecca for Chavs and assholes...... nuff said...... Beats going to Yates or Lloyds.....
|
great place
anonymous - 11 Feb 2006 17:19 |
Awful place. I really cant see why people rate it so highly on this website. I went there on a saturday and it was dead apart from some bored people at the front and loads of chavs playing pool.
Expensive beer as well.
Toilets are a disgrace and full of wanabees crowding into the cubicles no doubt shoving loads of class A up their noses for the inevitable Coach / Bus to Amadaeus "to like, pull da birds and stuff"
Horrible. I'd wish they would put the old Kwiksave back!! I'll give it a 1/10 just for comedy value.
|
cool, been going here years, fantastic birds
anonymous - 18 Dec 2005 20:43 |
the rat is only really good on a sunday now with ministry of cheese. well worth it. fit birds, good music, good drink. n then wen ure pissed, bus 2 deja
anonymous - 29 Nov 2005 10:34 |
Everyone keeps goin on about Sundays. Its only good on a Sunday because there is f**k all else to do!Stuck in doors watching antiques road show, ring a mate ''fancy going down the rat to perv at all the dirt bags in short skirts'' YES PLEASE. beers cheap but they forget to tell you they serve it in warm childs beakers because apparently certain people lose the plot at the sight of glass and start smahing them over girls heads?? Saw England beat Australia in this gaff tho with the most beautiful girl in the world so its lucky to me. Warning to old people: it takes about 20 minutes to walk the distance of this pub so incontinent? i advise a pub thats not the size of asda.
|
I love this pub, especially on a sunday nightwhenit is minestry of cheese, what a great night, brilliant music and cheep drinks, we go there religiously !!!
|
I Agree. Yeah i don't like the music but both the Wednesday and Thursday nights are going really well. Having worked most Wednesday's and the occasional Thursday i can honestly say that the crowd are much nicer than the weekend crowd and the atmosphere is great. The amount of hard work that goes into the nights they deserve to be succesfull. The pubs gone through rough times in the past but with Fridays and Saturdays picking up and of course Ministry Of Cheese on Sundays it's the best place to go to in Bexleyheath!! (not biased at all!!!!!!!)
anonymous - 16 Aug 2005 15:01 |
The Rat nights both Wednesday Alt and Thursday Rock nights are going strong with great crowds. Rock Matrix back in full swing and trying to present as stronger night as possible.
One thing is for sure the people that go there love it.
The point made about certain nights stopping was only to do with the fact people involved were overworked and needed time out, once some of the load had been taken off the future seemed different. No need for suspician only cheer for the fact that its going to carry on for a long time to come.
anonymous - 11 Aug 2005 10:40 |
yeah probably!!!! I'm sure both nights can run side by side as they probably each offer something slightly different. Take it easy mate
anonymous - 23 Jul 2005 18:08 |
It all seemed a little suss, but I'm cool about it. No worries, if I could shake your hand, I would. I bet people stumbling on this trying to find out about the pub wonder what the hell is going on.
anonymous - 20 Jul 2005 17:20 |
the comment was made when they thought they were going under. but things happened and they are able to carry on. besides the wednesday nights in the rat are nothing to do with rock matrix so they wouldn't be affected. to be honest i hate the music anyway so i'm not bothered either way!!!! take it easy fella
anonymous - 17 Jul 2005 02:03 |
Fella, If you cared to look, Rock Matrix made their statement on 17th June, and mine was made 4 days later on 21st June, when that was the FACT, as you put it. Seems like the situation changed pretty quickly (the next day even?). Which begs the question as to why the comment was made in the first place - seems there might have been a more/less money argument between them and the venue perhaps? Looks like they're back on til Christmas, or when the pub manager changes.
anonymous - 12 Jul 2005 10:25 |
maybe you should keep up with the times mate! rock matrix are around for the forseeable future as announced in the pub a couple of weeks back. So before writing something i suggest you get your facts straight
anonymous - 11 Jul 2005 20:39 |
What a sh!t hole it took ages for us to get served all night and come closing time they couldn't get us out fast enough. drinking up time, forget it
anonymous - 29 Jun 2005 00:06 |
Figure this is one of a few very good reasons why people will want to go The Golden Lion Alternative Wednesdays for Rock Music.
"Rock Matrix Announce Last Party 05:24 17/06/2005 Last Night, The Rock Matrix Announced its LAST EVER party night at the Rat and Parrot. This is to be held on the 14th July, with the usual bundle of prizes, competitions and debauchery, to celebrate not only 2 years of the rock night, but to celebrate the death of the Rock Matrix. Come down cos it will be your last!"
anonymous - 21 Jun 2005 16:15 |
yeah the Golden Lion has an alternative night but so does the Rat. Every Wednesday. Cheap drinks great DJ's and to be honest who wants to go to the Golden Lion anyway?
anonymous - 21 Jun 2005 14:00 |
Saw the comment about a lack of Alternative Music - agree totally. The answer, my friend is down the road - The Golden Lion they run an Indie/Alternative night called Alternative Wednesday. Its in association with Xfm, so you know you're in for a good one!
anonymous - 10 Jun 2005 17:06 |
The Rat is a good pub but has its reputation for being a rough place. Although i never seen a fight in all the years i been going there it seems an ok place if you with a lot of mates. The girls that go there are truely gorgeous! Never seen so many fine girls in one place at a time, that being the main reason i go there. Best place in the area for a good night out.
|
As most comments have said the best night is of course the Thursday night rock night, that atmosphere of it all is fantastic! And yes more punk music wouldnt go amiss but remember it's a ROCK night i.e. they have to play all genre's and unfortunately punk only gets a few plays. Though i will persist to request GBH, Propoghandi, Clash, DK's even though i know the DJ's don't have the CD's - it's fun ot be a wind up. Yeh back to the pub - fantastic - the bar staff are a great laugh and the bouncers are cool. Think you can just about walk up to anyone and start off a chat with them and find that two hours later you're still tlking to them...trust me i've done this one - everyone is so friendly. Run also by the same dudes (Rock Matrix) is the occaisional Rock Night Xtra on Monday nights out on when there's a birthday or special event close to the time. Aslo another good night - good to go to if you like the music but don't like how crowded it gets on a thursday night and/or you can make it thursdays.
|
Thursdays nite, is a great night! But it would be nice to have a bit more variety. it is the only place nearby that plays alternative music and a bit more punk, and some of the old classics would be nice to hear!!
anonymous - 25 Apr 2005 14:58 |
yes, there are a lot of chavs on every night except thursdays. but on the other hand, the rock music only seems to attract smelly goth types with straggly black hair, who clearly are unaware that things such as baths, soap and deodorant exist. at least the chavs make half an effort to look presentable. why cant the thursday DJs play a little less metal and a bit more alternative or punk? damn you smelly goths!
|
Wall to wall Chavs
anonymous - 8 Apr 2005 20:00 |
as long as u go with your mates and dont interact with the brain dead idiots looking to start a fight u will have a good time. it has potential to be so much better. they really need to get strict on id as too many young kids there, which puts people who are over 18 off going there, (also handy hint to manager, provide more toilets for girls)
anonymous - 28 Mar 2005 14:32 |
Thanks
|
As far as i'm aware at no point have we said that it was a family function. But we have adjusted the invitations to make this point clear.
|
We asked to speak to a mamager and was told he was not there no time were we told the was a assistant managerby the doormen and they wouldnt have none of it
Put 18s only and with id will be allowed in, on invites and dont hold family functions if familes are not welcome.
|
Diane I was the assistant manager who was working at the party. If you had asked for me then i would have been happy to have spoken to you about our age policy at the Rat and Parrot. The Rat and Parrot always has and always will be an over 18's venue. While it is not against the law to let under 18's in it is our policy not to. The doormen were not running the pub, they were acting on my behalf. As i have said before i would have spoken to you on the night but you didn't ask to speak to a manager. Im sorry that your night was spoilt but it didn't seem to spoil the birthday boys night which surely is the most important thing.
|
wont be going there ever again i arranged a party for my nephew's 25 my sister was turned away with my other nephew as he's 14 acoompanied by a adult !! and we were turned away with out 18 year neice as she didnt have id and was with 3 adults.
since when has it been illegal for youngester to go with adults
no manage avail to help
pub was being run by door men
necer will i arrange parties there and recon no one eles should.
|
Apart from a thursday there not much point in going.
You can get all the violence you can take pretty much anywhere in bexleyheath broadway and I'm sorry guys but the rat is no exception. Yes the door staff are good but when there jumping in cos its there mate it can cause a few problems.
Plus the fact when 11 o'clock hits your given your marching orders without the chance to drink the brought from a member of staff who was more than happy to serve you a couple of minutes before.
|
Thursdays at the Rat......what can i say, apart from it caters for the people who like Rock.....not every one likes Chav music y'know! Great atmosphere, cheap drinks and a guaranted F*****G good time!
|
THURSDAY NIGHTS RULE OLNLY NIGHT WORTH GOING OUT IN B'HEATH!
Dave Brown Sounds - 4 Nov 2004 12:54 |
Get down there on a thursday, it's quality!!
Kev - 30 Oct 2004 18:26 |
Sunday nights are great down at the rat. Drinks 1.80 all nite and all the old favourites makes it far better than lloyds which is just a scumpit. And the Dejas bus stops rite outside so if you headin up there it couldnt be easier. And the men are absolutely top quality- ddnt realise that good lookin blokes existed in bexleyheath till I went there
Katrina - 26 Aug 2004 11:04 |
Has Rock Night every Thursdays and is definately THE place to be if ou're into alternative music (tbh there's nothing else in Bexleyheath other than pikey bars and burberry). Lots of sexy girls in corsets. On the night bar deals and great atmosphere. Doesn't take too long to get served and the bouncers have always been good to me.
Ben Anderson - 16 Aug 2004 15:07 |
The Dj is fantastic on Saturday night, good atmosphere !
anonymous - 15 Aug 2004 15:25 |
When there last night and what a dump!! There where too many people, I dont think the bouncers check how many people there letting in. There was glass and drink everywhere. not a classy place at all.
anonymous - 15 Aug 2004 06:39 |
they need to sort the bouncers out and get rid of them. too much attitude. as a sunday night goer a few years back it is now unfortunote that myself and a few mates cant return due to some meat head on the door. not to worry though, what goes around comes around!!!!!
ya'll take care now
s_flex - 18 Jun 2004 15:43 |
The rat is definately the place to be, (not that i am bias cos i work there!)but because Fri and Sat nites are busier than ever and the old Sunday nites are making their way back.
I agree, the Sat nite DJ - Well Sexy!!
anonymous - 18 May 2004 13:48 |
Saturday nights are the best. This is mainly due to the fact that they have the sexiest DJ ever - Dave Roberts! He is GORGEOUS and plays some wicked tunes too! Well worth a perv girls!
anonymous - 27 Apr 2004 23:34 |
Have to agree that the Rat seems to be becoming the place to be on a Sunday night - again (Anyone who remembers back a couple of years when there was always a huge queue outside on a Sunday will know what I mean). Since all the madness with shootings and what not a year or two ago it kind of died on it's a**e but now things seem to be looking up again. The only down side to Sundays being busy again is that it now takes an eternity to get served at the bar - could they employ more bar staff please!?!
The Bexleyheath Fairy - 25 Apr 2004 12:30 |
Gotta agree with the new assistant manager's comment. Went there a few weeks ago and it's a hell of a lot better than it used to be. Massive place that could be quality if they use it well. Is it me or is Mark Morrisson playing in there every friday night???
Chris - 11 Apr 2004 17:33 |
everyone remember sunday nights at the rat.its really busy again.i was in there last week it was packed, had a wicked night. all the drinks are only 1.80 aswell. what more do you want!
anon - 8 Apr 2004 15:19 |
Pubs cleaned up its act alot, used to be full of pricks up for nothing else but a ruck. Been in there quite a bit since Novemeber last year and have not seen one bit of bother.
Nick - 29 Mar 2004 11:39 |
It plays loadsa good music and if im honest apart from the obvious trouble thats around Bexleyheath, there aint no trouble.
anonymous - 27 Mar 2004 15:02 |
Can't say I feel like I'm missing anything here. The last time I went there the bouncers made a**ehole comments to some of the girls with us.
They deserved to be made into swiss cheese as far as I'm concerned.
There's more atmosphere on Mars - go to Affinity instead.
Mark - 12 Mar 2004 19:18 |
being the assistant manager of the rat and parrot i urge everyone who has been in the pub to revisit it. new manager, new door staff and a lot less trouble than lloyds and yates at the moment. give us a go.
anonymous - 26 Jan 2004 15:36 |
Well ive been in the pubs quite a few times since i moved here...never heard anything about roughness or shootings till now....in fact its always empty when i go which is cool as u alctually get served.
Beenie - 2 Oct 2003 10:11 |
What can I say - a cavernous pub which tends to get a bit mad in the evenings - need I say more?
Amii - 3 Jun 2003 23:35 |
Good pub with loadsa good loud music, alhthough sometimes the drunkards and get a bit rowdy!!! Be warned as it can be a bit rough at times.
anonymous - 20 May 2003 18:21 |
