Walton Tavern, Walton on the Nazeback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
My late father used to work in walton on the naze and had a favorite pub he used to drink in. When visiting us once a month at the weekend, as children me and my older sister would get dragged down to the pub to sit and not be seen, while he had his 3 pints of bitter.
It was not until the other day a tall young man asked a friend, to put a poster, up in the charity shop window where we were shopping and leave some little flyers, advertising a weekend of singing in a pub near the pier he said. That was when the penny dropped!
He politely told us that the pub served a great sunday roast and also had a community website coming soon, for the residents of the town to enjoy and comment on and to "have a sherry on the new landlord" It was only then, we actually realised that the pub he was referring to had been reopened recently and was in fact the pub we used to go to, over 10 years ago!
We decided to visit the pub last night (friday) for a quick drink on the way to our bridge game in Clacton, all I can say is what a lovely transformation! Compared to how it was many years ago, it was a welcome site for tired eyes! What was really lovely was we have not been in the pub for over 10 years, since my father passed and we were made very welcome, the drinks were not as expense as we are used to paying in Clacton, all the staff were very happy and the whole atmosphere was relaxed.
Unfortunately we had to leave after hearing only 3 songs of a young ladies singing session, who had a splendid voice and had a rose colour throughout her hair. From what we listened to, the idea of having live music in a pub seems to work very well.
We will be popping in to try a roast Sunday, time permitting, as we noticed that there is also music on this Sunday afternoon with another young lady, this also seems a good idea as lots of people want to retire early to bed on Sundays for work in the morning and having late night entertainment will not work for most visitors to the town.
My daughter also likes to watch bands and singers, so I am sure now we all know the walton tavern pub is open, she and her friends will visit soon.
I give this pub a score of 9/10 and if we could have stayed longer to enjoy the evening it would have been a 10 out of 10

The comment posted in September 2009, bears no relevance now, as the pub closed shortly after, and remained closed for several months.
However, it has now re-opened, (under new management), and is quickly returning to the pleasant pub it used to be.
The new owners, (Derek & Carol), are the nicest people anyone could wish to meet, and their staff are all just the same. There are some slight changes, (satellite tv now gone, along with the pool table). However, this seems to make for a better atmosphere. They are steadily returning to a full eating programme. (At the moment, mainly lunch time but have just started evening menu), prepared by Steve, (their son).
Just last night, (Friday 6th August 2010), I spent great night in there, listening to the live music, (long time since I last saw customers openly dancing along with the music).
Derek admits that there is still a way to go, but I urge anyone within the vacinity to give the newbies a chance. You won't regret it.

AVOID THIS PUB, FOOD IS FOUL, WE ATE IN THERE THE OTHER DAY, THE VEGETABLES WERE STONE COLD, THE ROAST POTATOES WERE ROCK HARD, OBVIOUSLY FROZEN ONES THAT HAD NOT BEEN COOKED PROPERLY, THE MEAT WAS REALLY UNDERCOOKED. THERE WAS NO GRAVY AND PEOPLE WERE LINING UP WITH THEIR MEALS WAITING FOR SOME GRAVY TO BE BROUGHT OUT!!!! THE MANAGER WAS VERY RUDE AND ABRUPT.

Pub now owned by Scottish & Newcastle brewery. Not much change in range of beers, but they do now serve San Miguel and McEwans lager. Unfortunately, the quiz nights have stopped. "Tinnie" the Kiwi is a real laugh.
Sorry Jez had a bad experience with the food, but as a fairly regular customer here, I can assure him that what he experienced must have been a one off bad day, as generally the food is excellent and good value.

I went here whilst on Holiday with my family to have a family Meal, which my Nan aged 87, wanted to treat us all to, I have to say its the worst pub I ever been in. We ordered from the pub menu which said it was all fresh and prepared and it sounded fine, So We ordered lasagna, Mash and sausages. The waitress came back and said they only had one lasagna, So my nephew asked for an alternative and said about a chicken burger, he asked was it a chicken breast in breadcrumbs in a burger, she said no it was frozen processed chicken. Which doesn�t sound appetizing does it. He still had that anyway. I ordered the lasagna and it tasted dry and awful, it tasted like a microwave meal, it had chips and salad on the side, the chips were ok but the salad was going off on the sides. My Nan ordered a small portion of sausages and mash which came on a child�s plate. We ordered 3 sausages and mash which had a dollop of mash and two sausages surrounded in gravy. There were no side vegetables and to finish it off the mash was very lumpy. My Nan didn�t want to cause a fuss and paid for the meal. I was extremely angry after and couldn�t believe the poor quality of the food, very disappointing and I�m glad to say I would never go there again!

Now under new management, but still retains the old ambience. There have been a few changes in the range of beers on offer, with a slightly larger choice. They have also just started doing B&B again after a gap of a couple of years.

Family friendly, seafront pub overlooking the North Sea on the Essex coast.
Owners, Royston & Kaz and the staff always have a warm welcome for regulars and strangers alike.
Large restaurant, open every weekend and most weekdays (during the summer).
Large televisions showing most sport. No music.
Fun quiz most Sunday evenings.
Highly recommended.
