I went in this pub last night, not for the 1st time and I have spoken and been served by the bar Manager (Adam) before. On entering the pub we were closely followed by a group of 4. Adam completely ignored my Wife and I, to great the people behind and when I asked him for a drink, he huffed, turned around and asked a barmaid to serve us and then took the rude people behind (who announced they had a table booked whilst we were trying to order) through to the restaurant. We felt as though he thought, we were just lowly scum who shouldn't have been in the way. In 32 yrs of drinking in pubs this is by far the rudest, any barman has been towards me.
We told the barmaid how upset we were by Adam's rudeness, turned and went to the Bolton Arms and were greeted by friendly courteous staff.
This is a pub that is only interested in people, willing to pay for extortionately over priced food. I will not be returning!!!!

I agree with Spiggy.

What a shame it closed.

Best of luck to Adrian, Lydia and all the staff.

I always thought the beer was excellent

Sadly, The Crown has closed and is now boarded up. Let's hope it's bought as a going concern.

I've been to this pub a few times and the best I've found the ale is average. I have never had a pint that is crystal. On one occasion when I arrived just after opening time, I was given a topped up glass from some ale that was in a glass sitting on the drip tray? The pint was warm and tasted old, when I questioned it I was told that there was nothing wrong with it and it wasn't replaced. I should know what's good or bad - I'm a brewer by trade.
I have not been back since.

..... always seems to be packed on a Friday night,.. although it's so small it may just appear to be that busy...

If you go there for a couple of beers before walking to the Millstone it's great,... but wouldn't spend all night in there,.....

The decor is a little bit of a let down aswell,... for a pub right next to Basing House, and with doors you have to duck to get through. they could have made it look a little more atmospheric!

Popped in twice quick succession a couple of months ago. There are usually five ales to choose from (including a couple of interesting guests) and they are usually in good condition (though I had a duff Wye Valley beer that had to be replaced recently).

The pub interior and exterior is fairly unremarkable, as noted elsewhere it's based on the 70's mock-tudor look. It gets quite hot and stuffy inside because of the heat from the kitchen (food is a big seller here) and it's smaller than it looks - when the pub gets busy on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday evening it can a bit of a task to find a seat. There's a heavily-sloped garden out the back which acts as a sun-trap.

Fairly good for the beer range - worth a stop for that, though I'm less convinced about the venue itself.

Very good pub, except for the overpriced food. The key here is to eat the cheapest thing on the menu as the quality goes down as the price goes up. Excellent quiz night, Mondays, and always good beer and freindly staff.

Went here for lunch with a friend for their birthday. Quaint little pub which is quite dark inside. The garden out the back is nice and seems popular with the customers. Food was nice but over-priced (about twice the price of my local The Queens in town) but nevertheless good quality and generous portions.

As the Millstone was chav infested saturday 5th (why does good weather bring them out obviously the quarter lenght trousers get an airing!)took a short walk to the Crown .Small decked area out the front and suprisingly large garden at the back.Inside the old wooden floor and beams combo was well suited to the building. Five real ales on tap the London Pride was very good,Agree with a few of the other posters the food is over priced for what you get but the food and the presentation was fine,All in all worth a walk into Basing to find but please "leave your three quarter lenght"s at home"!

Well 852 if you love sitting in this pub to watch the world go by then you must be amazingly rich. I agree with anonymous, it is very expensive for what you get. Yes the food is good but not THAT good! You can get food just as good for a lot less in many other pubs.

Love this pub its my local, tv only when the rugbys on, good locals and great landlord. It is a pub not an eatery. No fruit machines which is a bonus, love sitting by the window and watching the world go by

Nice stroll out from Basingstoke town to this promising pub, but PRICEY...Guinness 3.00 and small hose-red 3.25 - large one is 1.50 more! Beers were Tongham TEA, Theakston's OP, Ironsides & Pride. Other halp pronounced Pride "OK" but moved onto wine (after 2nd mortgage)- Sunday roast (main only) at 9.75 is excessive & my other half was disappointed with one thinly sliced sausage in ciabatta for 5.75, puddings & starters set you back around 5.00 each on top of that. Quote from barmaid - "That's why I work here but don't drink here...." - Decor firmly 70's mock-Tudor. Wasn't busy on a glorious spring Sunday lunchtime. Wonder why...?

Friendly service and a genuine dedication to selling excellent quality food and drink. The real ale is a well kept as any I have ever had. They frequently have guest ales from micro-breweries such as Triple F and Hogsback. A genuine treat. I've eaten there twice and each time it was well above the ordinary. They have the odd 'themed' night to encourage people in - recently it was a 'curry night'. Beef vindaloo was excellent.
An ancient building set in a beautiful village, with cosy, comfortable rooms and decor which has not been modernised in the slightest - this does not detract from the overall clean feel of the place.
About as close to a perfect pub as you can find, to my mind.

lovely friendly little old fashioned country style pub
real ales not too bad either!!
nice place to spend a quiet sunday afternoon and just chill out at a more relaxed pace after a hectic saturday night

Cannot agree that "it's not really a pub." Full of locals of all types on my visit, a few eating but most simply having a few rounds. Each room had a bit of a different atmosphere, one more quiet, the others very lively. Sure looked like a pub to me.

Quality of the food, ales, and service were all quite high.

Having recently moved to The Topiary in Lychpit, Old Basing from London, we scouted around for good pubs, and after much looking, the Crown is our favourite. The atmosphere of the old building, the location, right in the heart of historic Old Basing and the frindliness of the bar staff are all first rate. The food is excellent, whenever we have guests to stay, we book a table, and have got to know the staff quite well! The one downside is that it is a little small in the winter time when the garden is unavailable, but that just adds to the cosy, exclusive feel to the place. We went to The Crown for New Years Eve 2005, paying 25 pounds per ticket, and were promised a glass of champagne, a top class buffet (smoked salmon, king prawns etc) and a disco. The night was fantastic, our guests loved the place and always want to go back whenever they come to stay. Peter is a great Barman as are all the staff, very friendly, professional and well organised. Beverage selection is good, offering ales on tap, kronenburg etc on draft, and a good selection of spirits (including more unique offerings such as Goldschlager, Jegermeister etc).

A thoroughly fabulous pub. If you are in the area, pop in and say Hello!

9 out of 10. Almost perfect.

.... if you want to go out for something to eat it's fine,... but wouldn't bother going there for a drink as it's not really a pub,..? 3 tiny rooms,... and not alot else,....

used to be better when there was a pool table,... but then it was alway too cramped anyway

Just had lunch here. Good selection of good food, a warm welcome and good beer. Nuff said.
anonymous - 4 Feb 2006 19:24
Good selection of well kept ales and private cosy room if needed
