user reviews of the Black Prince, New Haw

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Recently been redecorated to appeal to a thirty something age group with a coffee shop feel, loose cushions and distressed furniture. Not my scene, but guess they hope to attract a younger clientèle. Not sure there is the market and might have been better to stay as a traditional boozer.

They would sell more food if had menus on every table and the bar, including the non restaurant areas. Wasn't obvious they do food when I was in pub one weekday afternoon and I assumed they were not serving any until I asked.

Food pricey if eating on own, but good deals if buying for two or three people. Weekday 12-3 £6.95 for two main courses or £8.95 for three main courses. At other times or if buying just one main, meals start at £5.99 for ham egg and chips (ouch). Cod and chips £8.49, mixed grill £10.49. Bit expensive for a pint and a bite to eat for one.

The refurb doesn't suit me as well as the way it was, but that's progress. I wish them well, but not convinced its going to get the trade to pay for the upgrade and enough future customers to survive long term.

My only serious gripe is they have painted over the brickwork outside. It looked in character with white at top and the nice brickwork below. Now the whole outside is white and frankly it looks cheap and chavy. Such a shame.

It is an unfortunate human characteristic that we generally feel like writing a review when there is something wrong. This time I'm giving the Black Prince the thumbs up. A good traditional English pub, beer quality good and reasonably priced, customer service OK, a good mix of ages all enjoying the ambience. Well done.

We are senior citizens who have moved back to this area recently and were pleasantly surprised when we visited The Black Prince after many years away....beautiful pub, great food, excellent prices!!!. Only two criticisms, the staff are very cliquey with the regulars and not very friendly with new faces...more PR training needed! The other criticism is the children policy. I can fully understand kids not being allowed in, in the evening but what's wrong with daytime? We have been in there in the afternoon and it was empty, they would benefit by moving with the times and allowing families to use it for meals during the day. We have our grandchildren to stay often and would happily use the pub regularly for meals and drinks, shame that they are missing out on a lot of afternoon trade!

Was pleasantly suprised when visiting this pub for the 1st time in a long while. Bar Staff are very attentive, always keep themselve busy between serving by cleaning, polishing stocking up etc. The pub down the road could do with seeing how Bar Staff here operate. Food looks to be good value. Brilliant policy on children. Pubs are for adults to wind down in after a hard days work they are not Kindergarten.

great food at really good prices. been using it for years purely for the food as jd n coke is the same wherever you go. good atmosphere, shame the toilets and no kids policy let it down, we have to go to the surrey in st johns to get the same food chain which is an absolute pain. let kids in PLEASE!!!!!!!

Pedigree, London Pride, Courage Best and Tetley Mild on hand pump, all well kept and at good prices (as others have recorded). The mild was very good, and at 2.56 was a pleasant surprise. Staff were attentive and there are enough for the number of patrons.

The pub is a clean and tidy throughout. There is a small, paved beer garden outside. It has piped music, but not overly loud so it is easy to chat. The 3 TV screens were on silent so did not intrude. There is a games area with a pool table tucked away around the back. On Friday when I visited a band was setting up to play (but I did not stay to listen). There is a car park and plenty of parking nearby.

I am aware that others have though it a bit rough in the past, but it was pleasant enough on my visit. The patrons are not posh, and are mostly male, but they are not rowdy kids and were pleasant enough. I will visit again.

I didn't try the food but some form of food is available all day every day. A good 7/10 for the area.

To be fair, regarding my post below, yesterday I popped in to watch the end of the cricket, on my way home. I had a very tasty pint of Adnams Christmas Star in lovely condition at a reasonable 2.85.

Went to visit a friend who lives about 30 seconds away from this pub. Went to this establishment and was made very welcome by the friendly bar staff. Part of the "Fixtures & fittings" is Old Tommy who has his place at the bar. Had a few pints of Wells Bombadier which was excellent. Must visit my friend more often!!!

Courage best and London Pride both well kept. 2.59 pint for best. Very clean and well kept pub and food is excellent and with three different menus to choose from. 2.99 menu, 5 menu (12-4 Mon-Fri) and a full menu. Even the full menu is still reasonable with prices around 5. The only difference I can see with the full menu is that its prices are slightly higher for Sat/Sun and I think evenings? Same meals are cheaper at other times. Been in three times now. Twice in evening for a pint and once at 3pm for a meal with friends. They were all very impressed with this pub.

Has got three screens showing TV but they are very low volume and doesn't disturb. Has pool table and darts round the back bar but its tucked out the way and wouldn't bother people eating or wanting a quiet pint. Gents is fairly clear but could do with replacing the corroded metal urinal. I'm told the ladies nice and clean.

Has to be a 9 rating from me and that is saying something as I'm a miserable sod, diffuclt to please and always moan about something where service is concerned in this country. This pub has it just right.

The sort of real ale pub where you drink the Guinness to be on the safe side. To be fair the food is excellent and exceptional value.
The locals do tend to stare at you when you walk in, but there does not seem to be any of the trouble from the "Woodies" years.

Not overly inspiring. Two (two?!?) Courage Best handpulls and GK IPA which was off, with Newcy Broon in the fridge.

Decent beer garden but a bit Chavvy for my liking.

Great food, very cheap for what you get. Beer is always good. Never had a bad pint in this place. Not great for sports events as it gets crammed with locals and you end up feeling a bit unwelcome. Can't lose if you go there for lunch though.
