One of the homes of the One Mile End brewery so plenty of their beers on tap. They hosted a Bavarian Breakfast on Saturday as part of the London Beer City event so I chose a wheat beer which was OK. Pity they hadn't updated the blackboard on the wall as my original choices from that list weren't available and I then felt under pressure to decide what I wanted quickly as people queued around me. Too many wheat beers and pilsners on sale for me so perhaps one to try again when they aren't serving to a theme.

A very good, popular brew pub with a large selection of their own beers: porter, pale ale and a tasty temperance bitter. Reasonably priced, for London, at £3.60 a pint. The décor is in the old style - wooden flooring, chandeliers etc... which is nice to see. Staff were friendly and let us try before we bought. Much better than The Blind Beggar, a few doors down.

Fantastic brew pub that has a wide range of beers brewed on the premises and also serves a number of well known brands including Fullers. Never eaten here but the food always looks good and there is a separate seating area at the back of the pub. There is seating at the front of the pub so you can sit and watch the world go by.Really good crowd. Staff can, at times, be a bit slow but friendly.

Superb building but I don't think the beers have improved since grobag went. We tried 3 different ones and they were all lacking body. Sadly they were the worst of the 3 brewpubs beers we tried that day, Hopefully things will improve. Staffing wasn't great. I was ignored for ages whilst one bar person chatted with a customer whilst her colleague who was serving somebody else was virtually screaming at her to serve me but to no avail. The staff also need training. An American lady next to me at the bar ordered a pint of Fullers (guest beer) which was verging on mud, totally opaque and with large bits floating in it. I pointed out to the customer and the barperson politely that the beer was way into the bottom of the barrel. That should never have been served and could put someone from abroad trying our beer for the first time off it for life.

Was busy when visited Sunday after reopening a few weeks back but disappointed with the microbrewery ales and porter, all I tried were flat. Hope this is just teething problem as in other respects it's looking good.
|
This pub has a microbrewery in the basement. Best Bitter for £3.20 as are all the ales brewed on the premises. IPA, and others, available as keg or from the hand pub.

Having lived in this area all of my life, I've seen too many good pubs fall victim to 'regeneration'. The graduate types that never grew up in the area will never understand that there was once a predominately working class culture in the East End long before they arrived, hence the reason that some young East Enders still exist (the ones that never moved to Essex). It will be a sad day when all of the East End pubs conform to please this new soulless generation, but I'm afraid that will happen one day.

Well, my gripes previously posted have largely been addressed. Service remains consistently prompt and efficient. Should really be a photo of this attractive brick Edwardian building with inside iron pillar supports.

Decent pub a few mintues walk from Whitechapel station.
Always has a couple of ales on draught and the Harvey's Best Bitter when it is on is very well kept. On the odd occasion i ventured for something else it was poor.
The price of £2.60 a pint is excellent for London and especially this area, but as per a previous comment there is a lot of wasted space inside.
Tables and chairs outside that are used as a smoking area and sometimes can be a bit "chavvy" due to the people passing by.
Worth a look though.

Mix of good and bad points - overall I think it worthy of encouragement but they need to decide who is their market and spend a very little money on improving appearances (mainly cosmetic) to attract it.
1. Comments about one or two (cask) beers being off - a drinking buddy of mine said his was off. I didn't notice but my sense of smell and taste is sub-par.
2. Toilets: the gents' needs a soap dispenser even if only plastic bottle style. Scalding hot water from tap. No drier, hand wipes on unmounted cardboard roll and used ones seem to get left on floor rather than in bin. Needs some paint or whitewash to cover up graffiti.
3. Food cooking smells - ventilation needs fixing especially with the eternally pongy pizza.
4. Lot of wasted space to right of stairs at back with low slung lights getting in the way, they should be removed. At front to right, lots of furniture and other junk stacked up.
5. Some quite excellent live big band and jazz on Sunday evenings but while it's playing the pub staff have left the mega-screen tvs on with sound off or very low. Quite a few customers listening to live music but a number seemingly uninterested. Managment need to decide who they are catering for - make the music night music only and have the footie/news or whatever on the screens the rest of the time? The present mix doesn't work but could easily be fixed.
6. Cask ales on at gbp2.60/pint and overall mine have been fine when I've visited but comments about an occasional off-beer suggest possibility of a glitch with keeping that needs diagnosing and fixing.
7. Good service, attentive and prompt.
Pub is at corner of Mile End Road and Cambridge Heath Road, a convenient 5 mins from Whitechapel Tube/overground.

Noisy, music and sport led (lots of tellies), but unexpectedly adventurous beer range, well kept. Good mixed crowd on a Sunday eve.
|
Popped in again recently on a Saturday night with a few friends - there were about ten people in here, including us and the bar staff. Drinks were ok and at ok prices but I cant help feeling that its on its knees now and something needs to change pronto or ittl soon close its doors.

Not as unfriendly as it seems at first glance and the beer is very good value (Fosters is 2.30 a pint). A real mix of ages and backgrounds and, despite the appearance of some of the customers, no trouble whatsoever. Perhaps this reflects a laid-back community spirit, or perhaps the effects of the unusual tobacco being smoked at the outside tables. A great pub to watch the football or have a chat. The staff are on the ball, keeping a close eye on the bar. Great pub - better than anything else in the area.
|
Pub is a bit shabby but it had 2 real ales on Black Sheep & Sussex Best, although one went off when I was there Service OK. 6.60 for 2 pints and 2 packs of crisps.
|
A large bright pub. Tried the youngs special which was poor. The barman tried it after he pulled my pint and pulled a funny face which didnt suggest to me that it was in the best condition! Other customers eating various different takeaways in the pub left a nasty smell, not somewhere that i would like to go again!
|
Have made the mistake of hiring crap bands. They turn up, play their own songs super loudly then when they finish all their groupies leave. This makes the pub look emptier than usual. A shame as this had recovered somewhat from the chavfest it trned into.
|
rampantwurzel - good news.
the white hart is a great pub, although it may have a poor selection of real ales. and the food does vary, cheap and plentiful but not always the best quality but they do try.
personally i have had many a good time there over the last 7 years. It has a wide variety of customers, young and old, local and new to the area and it manages to provide something for all of them.
As for this chav business what you mean is that it actually has some young locals in it. This may seem unusual in London, and indeed this sort of thing seems to upset a lot of people, but this pub is all the better for it. (sussh dont tell anyone but I heard that most of them dont even have a first degree let alone a post-graduate qualification)
If you want a pub with a clientel that consists of 90% graduates from outside of London then this isnt the pub for you. But if you want a pub with a good mix of people where you might end up having a laugh then give it try.

Been there a few times, food choice went down when it changed hands. I have since found out where the previous landlord went, but not tried that place for food yet.... it's a pub in Greenwich, which has just been done up, so I'll have to check it out. ALL of this said, I met a friend there for Sunday lunch recently, and it was very decent grub, and not badly priced for a Sunday Roast. I do agree with some of comments about the chavs, this is usually when arsenal, man utd, chelsea, west ham or liverpool are playing live on the TV - yes, I've been there a few times. They turn up with their bling, and mostly fake at that, hold onto one pint, jeer at anyone who supports the opposition, rather than friendly rivals banter, and make the place less pleasant... once their match is over, they leave - pointless people!!! All of that said, I'm aiming to go back again with the same friend, especially now football season is over for another roast. Before I get slated for comments about the football chavs. I LOVE the game, and I also enjoy many other sports, but the chavs who go in there just for a match and leave, ruin the place.

An embarassment of a pub, havign now had two moderated reviews of this place I can confirm two things about this place
1. Poor selection of ale, and none kept in any kind of standard
2. Lots of kids on disco biscuits, 'avin' it, and probably on some kind of mock-er-nee knees up
As mentioned in the other White Hart review this makes a terrible trio of pubs in close proximity and given the (poor) choice so tricky to pick which one I'd drink in. So instead I'd rather drink Super K outside the LHT Bar as at least when I collapse in an alcoholic coma there may be at least one nurse who can help.
This place can be remedied and fixed but it really needs to start with basics (ie. clean up its act, no silly chav disco, better beer, better decor....) and then it may stand a chance. On the other hand, if your clientelle don't want it to change, why bother? Not for me....
Alternatively, I may never come to East London ever again.

A big corner pub with a lot of natural light. Only ale on handpump was the ubiquitous London Pride, which was a bit gassy and too cold, but generally tasted OK. Fair enough pub which fits into the OK but nothing out of the ordinary category. Definitely better than the Blind Beggar though.
|
Found this rather interesting pub last night and my friends and I had a great time!! Very nice food, drink and company! Met a guy called Alex(Italian) and left without his number stupidly. If anyone knows him or how to get hold of him PLEASE let me know......Thanks :) Dominique

This place used to be packed on Friday/Saturday nights, but have been past a few times recently and it's seemed pretty empty. Not sure what's happened, because we used to have a great time in there a couple of years ago (apart from trying to dodge the awful, gobby chavs)!
|
Stopped by for lunch. I wasn't really in the mood for pub fare, and frankly judged a book by the cover and thought this would be, at best, just a neighborhood boozer. But, I was surprised at the quality of the food, variety, and friendly service. For example, they offered a variety of salads but the menu says that they will make anything you want if they have the ingredients... I ended up with a very nice ham, mature cheddar, and sundried tomato salad on mixed greens... quite nice. So, I'd recommend it if in the area. Looks like they have great music on Sunday evenings, and I believe Thursdays as well.

Pretty decent but still a little unsure of themselves. They seem to be closing earlier these days, and their choice of live acts could be a little more thought out. Its mostly student acts who bring their groupies along, then when the band finish everyone leaves. On the plus side the staff are freindly and the beer is quite cheap.
|
London Pride not very good. When the band started playing was hoping for much better but they turned out to be boring old rockers so left.
|
A lot better than it was a year or so ago when it was full of chavs but still lacks something.
