Barley Sheaf...where does this web site get its info...this hasnt been the bs for over 10 years. it has been thru at least 4 changes of ownership since then, including being closed for 1 year.typical town centre pub, trying to get both evening + lunchtime crowd, lunchtime it manages, evening dont bother.....Bunters bar manages both expertly, totally different crowd at diff times of day.
This pub, if you are doing a crawl, go in, otherwise dont bother, beer isnt kept well, somrtimes cans

Closed yet again, supposed to be open in November, probably with yet another new name!

The pub has changed yet again and is now called the Riverbank and is aimed at the more mature (over 30). Live music on certain nights. Don't eat in the week, otherwise you will find yourselves eating alone in the restaurant area. Fridays and Saturdays very busy. Food is very good and reasonably priced. Nice real roaring fire and comfy sofas. Well worth a visit.

As the comment below states the pub has been completely refubished with a very modern look (not to my taste) and re-named THE CUCKOO. Clearly using the analogy that a cuckoo steals the eggs from other bird's nests. However, the whole place has become somewhat tacky and tasteless. Probably ok for the under 25s although forget it if you want the traditional pub atmosphere that the BARLEY SHEAF once had. Don't know what the food is like.

Now reborn as The Cuckoo. Seriously! An alchopop drinkers den from all appearances though if it's quiet it's pleasant enough decor to relax in.

1 for a game of pool; with a 5 deposit! i ask you!!!! Beer is 'dodgy' & the food is overpriced & of poorer standard than somewhere where you'd pay alot less for it. I think its lost its identity & its in a bit of a crisis. Needs an overhaul, but with so many other better pubs to go to i cant see a reason to go back & bother to see whats changed.

Refurbished a few years back and is much better for it. Nice and bright interior this is good for watching football on a Saturday afternoon or for a Saturday evening out. A shortage of bottled beers when I visited - maybe there is a change of hands on the cards. The food is very nice. I hope this place continues to do well. A bit pricey though.
