Now refurbished and renamed the Cow and Telescope. They've done a good job, nice decor without being over the top and decent beer on sale. Still get the odd 'characters' drinking from morning till night but generally nicer people than when it was the old Sutton Arms. Worth going to watch the bands too. Well worth a visit.

Located at the far end of the high street but was not worth the walk. Although there was 2 real ales on the bar, Doom Bar and Old Golden Hen the barman was reluctant to sell either because no beer had been poured since the previous evening. Surely one of the duties of a competent barman is get the beers ready for sale each day and if that been pouring out a couple of pints to clear the lines so be it. Eventually he poured 2 pints off Old Golden hen and the resultant beer was fine. Just because the barman doesn't like real ale is no excuse for not preparing the beer for sale. If this was typical, I cannot recommend this pub to real ale lovers.

Wasn't too sure about this place from the outside but it is very nice. The decor is a little bit tired, the chairs need upholstering and there was a slight musty smell upon entering but the chap that served us was very nice as were the clientele, bar the arguing children that were not being told to behave themselves.
Only other gripe was that the barmaid that was asked to assist when the bar was busy refused as she was on her break then stood behind the bar watching as we were waiting to be served. I feel she should have come off her break briefly to help out rather than bellowing 'I'm on me break!' leaving one chap to serve around 10 people. She could have continued her break afterwards as it became quiet.
Good ale choice and a couple of draught ciders.
Would come again when next in Southend as pleasantly surprised 6/10.

musty and old, but freindly during weekdays, kids allowed till seven, but not allways the standup parents are present with there children. great choice of ales and lager. and allways a live band at wknds.warm friendly staff are on hand. pool table and juke box. (a word of advise, let your children enter the play area at your own risk!) all in all tho, not a bad little boozer.

Popped in for one. Stayed for three. Director's is rather palatable and pleasant community feel missing from most pubs. When I'm next in Southend, I'm going again.

great nights here with live music.Good bands, recommend 'Junk yard Aliens ' when they play. Brilliant night. Generally a older crowd here but suits all age groups. Thumbs up. Smoking area seems adequate, under cover, u won't get wet!

This pub is the best for live music - great bands for free every Friday and Saturday

A quality pub with mixed croud and regular entertainment including unusual stuff like magicians and hypnotisits! A great pub, good for a laugh & one of the few proper pubs in the town centre
