I'd made the Bricklayers Arms my last pub of the day last night, until I'd realised that the pub opposite was the Bermuda Triangle - one I'd seen listed in the top 100 UK pubs on here previously. So it was rude not to have a swift one. The interior is a little unusual. There is one main drinking area around the bar, along with a small side room and another room at the rear, packed with tables and probably very cosy when/if the pub is rammed with people. The pub certainly possesses plenty of character. 4 ales were on - Goddards Fuddle Dee Dum, Sixpenny 6d Best & Dark Star Hophead & American Pale Ale. On enquiry, I found there was also a real cider from Westons, fetched from the cellar. I believe this was Founders Reserve. Certainly more of a pub than the Bricklayers opposite and certainly a decent pub. But I could probably name at least 100 better, in my opinion. But of course, it really depends what you are looking for in a pub. 7/10 from me.

Going downhill fast. Today has Coors Doombar and Marstons Fortyniner. Is this the beginning of the end or just a temporary blip? Let's hope the latter.
things could be looking up for this pub, soon to have a new manager!hopefully this one will care about customers as well as his friends and hopefully know something about real ale and keeping it well.when you sell 8 different lagers you dont need 3 blond ales.hopefully quality will go up rather than just the prices.
This is the one of the very few real ale pubs in Poole and still has four regularly changing real ales generally from small independent breweries. Fortunately they haven't succumbed to the mass-marketing from brewing giant Molson-Coors, so you won't see Doombar on the pumps here. This is a small and very traditional pub with no food and generally a very good atmosphere.
The really negative thing about this place is that the music is far too loud at the weekend and occasionally on busy nights during the week. It's just a small pub and it needs much smaller loudspeakers (and just two of them: not four).
not worth trying this pub anymore, went in first time for ages, ale now 3.50 a pint!!!! and not kept well
Smaller on the inside than it appears on the outside. Has a nautical (and triangle) theme to it. Three ales on - had apint of the Trashy Blonde which was nice enough.

Excellent beers, excellent music, excellent pub. Nuff said.
I love this place! Not easy for me to get to from where I live, but worth making the trip definitely. Small, cramped, you trip over peoples legs and dogs, get lost round corners, and feel like you're in some other reality, amazing! Give it a try...
Four well picked and quickly rotating ales and quirky interior. Handy for Mr Kyps
Favorite pub in Dorset. Well kept beer. Polite and helpful. Can't recommend it enough.
This place has only had two recommendations this year, but yet it's 3rd in the top 40! It's a West country set up. This sites a joke.
Moved back to Dorset and to a proper pub with a good selection of real ales and German lagers.
The best thing about this pub was sacked before xmas....w'll all miss you Josh!
A wonderful quirky place. Ever changing range of interesting beer which is nearly always well-kept.
this used to be the best real ale pub for miles.not any more, its going downhill faster than a fat landlord on ski,s.beer is poor and not well kept, as you can tell because its always empty now!not had any camra awards for ages.gisella, why are you allowing this real english local to die, dont you care anymore?
Great little pub with great selection of beers
Popped in on Monday and after reading the reviews about this pub i was expecting this to be a right 'gem' but i was a little disapointed they had a very average real ale selection and the pub itself isnt anything different from most other pubs noting out of the ordinary.
The oldman and myself love this pub,its not our local but it would be if it were closer to where we lived. dont change what you have there. a smashing pub A1
Great Pub, Good selection of beers and lagers.
Take no notice of dominogirl89 with her comment about the picture of the pub a very old photo. Look at picture No 5 and see the revamp up-to-date picture of the best pub In Poole. A must to go there.
look at picture - enough said
Great Pub , Good selection of beers, recommended.
Just moved down from London, my wife and I discovered this little Gem last Friday night while exploring our new neighbourhood. What a find, great beer, music and atmosphere, and real people. The staff was excellent
Bermuda Triangle is still the best Pub in Poole. I think mysteryman 12 must have been drunk, judging by his grammar and spelling, maybe the staff thought he should slow down a bit on his drinking for I am sure they dont want drunks annoying other customers.
a new manager is needed!one who cares about customers not just his mates.free the bermuda one!
this is a pub going downhill fast!no regulars, short measures by the manager and often just 1 or 2 of the 4 beers on offer.used to be best pub in area, but sadly no more.noone seems to care!dont know if it deserves any more camra awards.
Did one of my regular Poole/Bournemouth pub crawls and started here on Saturday afternoon. Four excellent ales on offer, all in great condition. Fully derserving of its high ranking in the list of top pubs.
Great Pub, Great Beer selection, Recommended.
Funny you should say that, I had the same Problem the last time I went there. Two staff working their socks off and one messing aroud with a cassette in hand. I guess He must be the landlord.if not he is in the wrong job.
Great pub with a lot of atmosphere Four good real ales on show but I stuck to the bunces Danish dynamite .would be full marks but let down by the service, some idiot taking no notice of the customers and messing with the music most of the night. Take your own drink if youre thirsty
fantastic place altough agreeing with gingerdude about the prices, still a great selection of good quality beer. good atmosphere, a real pub and a great place for any beer drinker or infact anyone that appreciates a good pub.
Great pub but so, so expensive embarrassed myself by thinking Id been short changed, I was wrong.
still the best pubXfarXfar....atmosphere...excellent beer....excellent.range...excellent--keep it up team, but give us a smile Steve!! well done!
Dai. I think you may have mistaken this for somewhere else.
7/10
The pub to go to with any beer drinker. Best selection of beers for miles. Well Done
Went to a wedding at St Pauls Church and had a drink before hand with our friends at the pub over the road, which was the BT. I love real ale and there was four good ales on tap.Very nice pub,Recommended.
Not been here for a VERY long time, absolutely agree with all the positive comments, sooo many good beers (wish I had left the car at home and could have sampled more) - a rare 10/10 for me
and deservedly so!

East Dorset CAMRA pub of the season summer 2008
This is a all round nice place. Beer good, atmosphere good 8/10
Great little pub, reminds me of when my dad use to take me to his local in Hammersmith,Still has that traditional feeling with more atmosphere,Plus a very good selection of beers.A1
Must be good, lots of Camera awards displayed on the walls.I drink wine so I dont know how the beer tastes,But certainly a great atmosphere
Great pub with a good selection of real ales. If I were local it would probably be my local
Ended up making a 25 mile detour today whilst working to sample this place. Nice, it was worth it. Good selections of beers although I only had a half. 8/10
Love the aircraft wing on the ceiling, hope it dont fall on someones head, but I guess they would be to drunk to know in this place with the selection of real ales and German lagers for sale, This place must be worth a gold mine.
Agree this place is nice. Was there in march. Only problem was I drank to much!
Great Sounds Plus good real ales,a good starting point for a great night out.Can get to busy at times, but I guess thats because its so popular
Visited last year whilst on holiday. Top place hope to repeat visit in the summer. 9/10
One of the best in Poole area, good staff excellent beers ,and i`m on my way down there today ,Bank Holiday monday,no better way to spend the day .
My first visit on recommendation - what a great place. Friendly staff, fantastic beers, good music, reasonable prices. What more could you want?
Excellent place. 8/10 everytime.
The best pub in Poole,Love the music and the Warsteiner Lager A1
Four real ales available on my recent visit; Freeminer Speculation, Hopback Apple Blossom, Theakstons Old Peculiar and Youngs Ordinary. So a good mix of strengths and a good mix of well known and less well known ales. Tried the Speculation and the Apple Blossom and found them in excellent condition. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, regulars likewise and it appears that very little has changed in terms of the decor and layout since my last visit some seven or eight years ago. (That is a compliment by the way)
Not only real ales but also imported German beers on draught.
Definitely the best pub in Poole. Great atmosphere and excellent bar staff. I once left my wallet behind after a few too many. The next morning I returned to find it had been handed in - without anything removed - definitely a rarity.
Also, I love the occasions when the whole pub - staff and customers erupt into the chorus of whatever's being played on the jukebox!
Popped in yesterday before going next door to Mr Kyps.
Having read decent reviews I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Three real ales from Archers and one from Downton all well kept.
Pleasant atmosphere and an interesting collection of artifacts around the bars.
If I am in this part of Poole again, this pub will be getting a return visit.
The best real ale pub in the South. Plus a selection of imported European draught beers.
excellent staff....excellent beer...excellent pub
Always an excellent selection of Real Ales, spoiled for choice. Got totally hooked on something called Erdjinger, some cloudy beer in a fancy glass. Great stuff.
Recommended by a friend.Nice atmosphere and good range of real ales.Certainly revisit again in the future
Oustanding selection of bitter and decent largers, inc. draught Budvar, Budvar Dark and Doom Bar all at very reasonable prices (for Poole at least) Interesting themed decor (in a good way) Only let-down by the lack of a decent pub garden.
Went in the other Saturday afternoon. Completely smoke-free, of course. The four real ales on included Abbott, which I can't be bothered with. However, the other three from Godards, Salopian and Dark Star were superb.
nice to go into a proper pub for once with a good selection of real ales and german lagers
Good excellent fun, gets really packed. Sort of place that can be empty at 9pm on a Sunday night but packed by 9.30. Beer and largers are excellent.
Joint winners with the Porterhouse for ED CAMRA pub of the year 2006
Best all round pub in Poole. Great staff (including John) Great beers great drinkers. Miss it heaps.
Great pub and bar staff. Walls and ceilings are plastered with all kinds of nautical crap, but don't let that put you off - it isn't really a theme pub.
Good mixed clientelle (18 ->80). Can get very busy.
my favorite pub in poole
The best pub in Poole. Great friendly atmosphere, Good fast service, and more important super quality condition beers and lagers. Almost forgot a lovely German landlady
One of the best pubs in the area for a decent pint of real ale. Unfortunatly, the draught Erdinger is so good that I rarely drink the beer. Try it for yourself but be warned, more than four or five pints and you'll be carried home.
Excellent beer
this pub has always been highly excellent!
Excellent range of real ales plus German bottled beer (Erdinger dark etc). Can get a bit crowded sometimes due to its deserved popularity!

One of the few pubs in Poole with a decent range of regularly changing ales.
A decent crusty old buffers pub with the occasional young face at the weekend.
Not large so often packed out.
Proper pub with proper beer.
Three German beers Warsteiner, Bitburger & Erdinger. Four guest ales always changing & different ABV's
Beer & people what more do you need?
Don't agree about the name being stupid, I've been missing without trace in there a few times.

Always packed, great decor if you want to impress americans, feels slightly cliquey, lots of attractive older women and cool older guys so I always feel a bit inferior when I go in there. I prefer the Central - easier to get a table and drink, and they often have music at the Central too.
Chris C - 15 Jul 2004 22:26 |
Decent pub despite the stupid name. Well kept real ales and decent grub.
