A sizzling pub that looks good on the internet but not so good when you visit.Basically a rough locals pub that is probably good for the regulars but not for newcomers. Not child friendly and not a pub to go for a meal with your family.

The Old Maypole was open when I went past on Monday 9 December 2013.
It is a Sizzling pub and three real ales are available. I didn't have time to go in and check on it but it seems OK.
I believe that the two previous comments reporting it closed have confused this pub with the Maypole in Chigwell a couple of miles away.

Boarded up when I drove past the other week.. ready for new flats probably.

Drove past last week, the pub was boarded up.

I had the recent pleasure of re-visiting the old maypole recently, and the pub,it's staff and it's facilities continue to impress me. i.

A couple of years ago the pub underwent a complete refurbishment into a Sizzling Pub and resteraunt, the pub is now divided into two zones, the main area is the sizzling restaraunt, where you can order some really succulant dishes such as their excellent steaks, cooked very nicely and very tasty indeed.

This part of the pub allows families to eat with their children there's pleanty of seating and is a very extensive area there is also a fully enclosed Beer Garden out the back,as well as an outside drinking space at the side.

The other part was the former Pool Room, and this is the general pub area-you can also eat food purchased from the sizzling menu here as well-this area has more seating, plasma TVs for all the sport etc,Two Pool Tables,a Darts area and a newly installed"Top of the Pops"Digital Touchscreen Jukebox-select any top 40 hit going back to 1952 and more.

I once was a regular at this pub when i used to work in the area-since my redundancy, and over the years i have seen many changes it was once a Mr Qs,an Arena pub and is now a Sizzling pub and restaraunt in the mid 90s there seems to be one thing that remains the same, that is the old Maypole continues to be run by Ray Claydon and his family,he has been here throughout all those years though I still pop back to the old maypole now and then just to see how everything is with the pub.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that they have a monday club(Including Bank Holidays)-Where you enjoy drinks such as Carling and Carlsbery at only 1.79 a pint.!!.

My Dad drank here from 1936.
I saw Duanne Eddy and his band live here in 1975.
This has always been a great local pub.
Always will be.
The landlord and his wife, and family, are quality.
Compared to the Alfreds Head, the Fairlop Oak, or any other local pubs, this is best.
And as for the local tearabouts...just don't upset them.
Cushtie.

Great beer and food prices. Interior is nice enough. Have eaten here on numerous occasions and it has always been nicely cooked. On the whole, bar staff are friendly and I have never had to wait that long to get served.

The drinks in here are incredibly cheap, but there's a good reason for that. Unless you're willing to be surrounded by local idiots and lager louts in a stale setting (despite the decent refurbishment works) then this pub is not for you.

I have been to this pub a couple of times and was impressed on both visits. The inside is nicely decorated; the food was great and it was well priced. No complaints on the beer, how many places do a pint of Carlsberg for 1.79
The staff were also friendly and I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
gosunderland - 26 Aug 2009 11:22
Youngs Best,London Pride,Bombardier ale wise. Carlsberg only 1.79 pint. This place is owned by the sizzling pub co. chain and the food looked and smelled divine. The place looks pretty naff from the outside but the interior is nice and there is a beer garden too. 8/10

Went there for lunch with a friend simply because needed to meet in the area and had no idea of any decent places. Turns out this is the furthest thing from a decent place possible. The food was without doubt the vilest either of us have even (attempted) to eat - in the end we had to leave and eat in Tesco's cafe. Can't comment on the drink but if you're after food, chew off your right arm before trying anything on their menu! The reason it gets a 1 and not a 0 is becuause the staff were ok about our complaint.

Post 9/11 i found it difficult to enjoy a ploughmans in peace. Bring on the Old Maypole. Minimal furnishings and a controlled supply of peanuts on tap make this the pub of choice fro those on the dole or from zone 2.

Used to visit up until a couple of years ago, had great entertainment and surprisingly good London Pride. The downside was the immature clientele, either they were getting younger or I was getting older!

Very big pub with tons of room and very clean (carpets, tables, toilets, windows, etc). Ray the landlord is a very lovely bloke. Very friendly and supportive management and stuff (two big security men on the Saturday night I visited)Proper pros in my opinion

Have been drinking in this pub since I moved to the area back in 98 and I've seen three versions of it.

98-01
Cracking PROPER boozer!

01-03
Went all pink and blue coloured. Didn't really like this era.

03-present
Darker colours, looks a little more like a pub again.

Always have a laugh in the Maypole even though some of the chav punters in there can get on your t*ts! Sometimes think they own the place. Landlord is a lovely bloke though and don't stand for no sh!t. It's a nice big pub with tons of room and has a good atmosphere when packed on weekends. Not sure why but it's gone a bit quiet of late.

Happy to call this my local.
stoner - 10 Feb 2006 10:09
Used to be my pub of choice, but now seems to want to cater for all the under aged chavs in the area. Best to avoid if football is on the telly as seats and service become non-existent. OK for a few afternoon beers though...
drunkmarv - 8 Jan 2006 14:27
This pub is good most of the time, but young drunk people take over the place on late licence nites and it gets too crowded and it spoils it rotten. Needs to be more strict on id and make the place 21 to get in on late licence it could do better. Other than that its a very nice place to be.

The name for this pub is THE OLD MAYPOLE,it seems you just named it as simply THE MAYPOLE
whoever originally suggested it got it's name slightly wrong, that said.......

I have been visiting The Old Maypole since the early ninties, and I know Ray Claydon and the members of his family
who have run this establishment since that time
This has to be the best pub in Barkingside-or should I say Hainault-Absoloutly FIRST CLASS FACILITIES,FIRST CLASS MANAGEMENT AND STAFF,and trouble-free too.
Patrick A Banks. - 25 Feb 2004 18:19
The food is nice the barstaff are very friendly and the beer is good , although beware of the Carlsberg export. This is a strong pint and has proved too much strong side for my Lilly
Emma Moore - 15 May 2003 17:21
Recently refurbished pub all ikea and spot lights lacks character and originality.Beer and food typical of all chain pubs very bland, occasionaly have entertainment worthy of the name.
Pool tables are a god send though let down by the feral teenagers using them
