Visited after my second successful completion of the Three Peaks. The weather was sunny so everyone had decided to sit outside and take in the sun. The Clark's Blonde was well kept and went down well, although the young girl who served it appeared a little unfriendly, something that at least the landlady showed when dealing with a group of people who had just arrived to stay the night. Decent unpretentious pub with a reasonable choice of ale.

cant understand a previous reveiw about surley staff. when i asked if we could stay in our motorhome while using it as a support vehicle for some people that were doing the 3 peaks, they were very accomodating . the beer which had 3 different offerings from theakstons were very good .the menu looked intresting.and the ale was a damm side cheaper than in the pubdown the road

Been here a few times recently. Beer by Theakstons and a guest - the last two times Kirkby Lonsdale Ruskin which was kept well - a good beer, but at 3.10 rather pricey. You never are greeted with a smile - more viewed with suspicion!! If you go in the lounge to the left it might have the atmosphere the previous reviewer describes. The bar on the right is very often full and interesting to listen to the events and gossip of the Dale! There always seems to be a chap though who will be keen to know who you are and what you are up to.....!!

Overpriced beer, surly service, and the atmosphere of a disused railway station. If the other pub in the village isn't a better bet, then God help it.

Visited after finishing the Three Peaks Challenge, it has two seperate rooms sharing a central bar, with a further area at the rear for food. It was a little quiet on this visit although it was still early evening. There were a few farmers stood in one side whilst the other was virtually empty. Limited number of beers but I was satisfied with the Bath Ales Gem I had which was well kept. On the downside, it was approaching freezing outside, yet the pub had only just lit its fires so the place really was very cold. Pub sits in an excellent setting and offers a no frills experience.

This pub is a real disappointment. In terms of layout and appearance it's probably the better of the two pubs in Horton, but it caters far more for residents than walkers or drinkers.
As a result, there is a notice stating that the fire..."is not to be used as a drying room for non-residents". There are also two notices in the gents toilets, one stating that the toilets are not to be used as a changing room and another informing you that the sink is for washing your hands only and not having a bath in!
When I was in last week I asked if it was ok for me to charge my phone, something that I have done at several pubs that I've visited whilst camping in the Dales without a problem. I was told there was a fee of 1 for me doing this. As I was already spending nearly 10 on three drinks at the time I found this very disappointing. The fact they don't do tap water and only sell it (see review below) doesn't surprise me - but is that actually legal??
When I was in on the easter weekend we were refused service at 10:45pm being given the excuse that the pub closed earlier on a bank holiday weekend - but this was on the Saturday not the Sunday night! They were however, happy to take our money if we purchased bottles and drank them off the premises.
On the plus side, they had two real ales on, Old Peculier and Golden Zest (a guest ale from Everands). Both were in good condition.

It's ok - not worth going out of your way to visit, but if you're in the area you wouldn't turn your nose up in disgust. Three ales on, best of which was Old Peculier (although rather expensive). Ate here and the food was standard pub grub - if you've been out walking it's fine; if you're expecting a top quality meal you'll be disappointed.

Visit fairly regularly as I use the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle rail line a lot. Decent enough pub with a bar, lounge and restaurant area. Limited selection of beers & lagers but usually kept OK. Log fire is very welcome on the colder days. Usually quite busy, especially in the summer. One notable thing is that they do seem to have a remakable turnover of staff from year to year (mostly from overseas). Gents toilet basic but OK. Never eaten there so can't comment on the food. 5 minute walk from the rail station.

Ok for a quick pint but nothing special in terms of beer.
Beer range is the usual Theakstons and Black sheep and is quite expensive. 3.15 for a pint of old perculier?
There is a central bar which serves two rooms - one for dog owners - plus another room which serves as more of a restaurant. Haven't tried the food but there looks to be plenty of choice - with an emphesis on locally sourced produce.
As said before..this pub is more catered to hotel residents than drinkers.

Visited the pub before the summer rush and after having walked nearby Pen Y Ghent. Dying for a pint......Black Sheep on which was drinkable. Asked for a pint of tap water and the landlord (I presumme) said that they don't do tap water they only sell it in bottles!!!! How difficult is it to turn on a tap! If I had just gone in the pub and asked for water, then fair enough. However I had just bought two pints of beer. Ain't gonna go back. Shame.

Beer - Not a great choice but Old Pec was perfect. The Best wasn't befitting it's name but it was OK.
Food - As with most of the pubs locally, the menu was a comforting array of pub-grub. Didn't get to try any. They do sell the lovely Seabrook crisps and delicious pork scratchings.
Atmosphere - I visited during the early evening when it was quiet, I believe it got flooded later on due to the crazy weather. The fire was belting out heat good enough to dry my coat.
Service - Landlord very pleasant and welcoming.
Overall - Tailored towards the top-end of occasional rambler rather than heavy duty walker, this hotel is situated in a very pleasant village and within easy walking distance of the rail station and the Pen Y Ghent peak paths.

A decent enough place, more setup for the hotel residents than drinkers. They only have Theakstons on and only XB on handpump.

An OK place. I've never really been all that keen on Theakston's, and that's what's on offer here so I couldn't really recommend this place on the beer...it seemed pretty cosy though, had a nice fire on the go when I visited. However it seemed to be packed with ramblers just the wrong side of middle-aged, and I couldn't help feeling that it lacked the atmosphere of some of the other pubs in the area.
