Wether it"s a fiddle or not lets be honest, the place is a bleeding death trap! people always say why does"nt he do the place up,but it"s always packed at the weekends so why shoud he everyone seems to put up with it? mind you the screw that takes the place of the door handle on the gents keeps falling out so a minor alteration there please! Anyway sorry to hear about the short changing incident never a nice thing to happen and especially when you don"t get a decent answer from manager.

I have been going to the Rhu Bar for years, pretty much since it opened but aftr last night I wont be returning and guess I will be another of the many customers Rob Bates has lost in recent months.
I was short changed by the barmaid last night to the tune of 10.00. I complained to the barmaid who reply was "I dont make mistakes". I asked for the manager and was told she didnt know where he was which is not exactly a customer friendly and helpful attitude. Whils insisting on speaking to the manager and being given the same response (as above, Rob Bates appears. I told him what ha happened only to be given the same response - "my wife doesnt make mistakes" All he was prepared to do was check the takings when he cashes up (whenever that might be is anyones guess). I told my wife what had happened and she then informed me that the same thing has happened to TWO people she works with. It seems Mr Bates and his wife have a very nice racket going on at the Rhu Bar.

The last comment made me laugh,... I think they should bring in a ridiculous shoe policy, would really brighten up the night,...
Any way, I don't like this place at all, dark dingy why anyone would want to go there is a mystery to me?????

ive never liked the rhu bar - reagrdless of whether rob bates was misquoted or not. Its too small, i get fed up of having to wee in the gents, waiting an eternity at the bar and im fed up with the ridiculous footwear policy on the door.(that means, the policy is ridiculous, not that you have to wear clown shoes or something..although that would be quite amusing.) ive never had great service there and frankly its a little clicky.
The protest was amusing though.. we watched it from yates window!
try the light lounge! its nice and spacious!!!

I have also read the comments in the Basingstoke Observer, and totally disagree with Rob Bates comments......I know a good few people which including myself) will never set foot in this place again over this. Makes it sound like a lovely place................

I totally agree with what the Rhu bar Manager said in the first place and so would most people who've drunk there. But who'd be stupid enough to make those comments public and tell a newspaper??!!

Regards the article in the observer, there was a "protest", if you can call it that outside the bar a week or so ago, which consisted of a least 4 people who have been barred from other venues in the town for poor behaviour....make what you will of that.

I agree with Tobo, he is an absolute moron. He will find that very soon the council will realise that he has the most inaccessable bar in Basingstoke and FORCE him to pay money (shame) to improve access for the less fortunate. Do not forget Mr Bates it is the council who will grant you your next license, you hope. I do believe that disabled peoples money is the same as yours and everybody elses!
|
The person runs this place is a moron. Below is an article from the Basingstoke Observer:
A Basingstoke bar owner has defended his amazing decision to ban disabled customers from his venue in the evening after instructing bouncers to turn away anyone on crutches or in a wheelchair. Rhu Bar boss Rob Bates says the disabled are not welcome in his venue on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights after 8pm, because he doesnt have the facilities to cater for them and his regulars cant have a 'groove' with a wheelchair in the way.
Observer reader Cliff Oxlade and a group of his friends fell foul of the Rhu Bars new policy on Friday, March 1. Cliffs partner, who was temporarily using crutches after knee surgery, was barred from the venue by a bouncer with the words no crutches. Cliff said: When challenged he simply advised that he had been advised that no crutches are allowed and refused to give any further explanation. At the time we were all very angry at the abruptness and the lack of any explanation from the bouncer, but I guess theyre not employed for their customer service skills. All four of us have vowed not to return to the Rhu Bar and many other friends have also expressed their dismay at the Rhu Bars attitude.
To find out for myself if the ban was real, I borrowed a pair of crutches and a Medi fixed walker to give me an authentic broken ankle and hobbled my way up to the popular music venue on London Road. But despite pleading my case, the bouncer on the door told me firmly: sorry pal no crutches. Its the managers discretion and he wont let you in.
According to Rob Bates, he isnt discriminating against the disabled because he wants to - he just has no choice. The Rhu Bar boss claims his nightspot is too small, too old and on too many levels to be modified to be disabled-friendly. Why would somebody in a wheelchair want to come into my bar when its a dance bar, a groove bar? he said. When I built this business I did not have to cater for disabled people because they werent coming out, and they dont come out much now. My business is my regulars who have supported me for the last seven years, not the disabled society. They are not paying my bills, they come in and have one orange juice. My regulars want to have a groove and they cant with a wheelchair in the way.

Visited for the first time last month, bit expensive yeah. No real outstanding beers, lagers really. Sexy good looking ladies behind the bar. Got a real mediterannean feel to it. I only went there at lunch time so i cant comment on the nite life.
