Fond memories of this pub and drunken lunchtimes over 20 years ago. Went back recently, wished I hadn't. Used to get a good crowd in, train drivers, postmen.

Perhaps we visited this pub on an off day, but it was not a pleasant atmosphere, the Guinness tasted a bit of disinfectant, and the 'garden' is just a concrete bunker without a roof. Sorry, but I was really not impressed.

Smallish but comfortable. Shepherd Neame, pretty reasonable.
|
Has a good pool table, has an interesting sunken garden type area, good function room, good books. Interesting layout to pub although can be a bit stressful when it's busy.

This place has been taken over since christmas, and I've got to say you can really tell the difference! When I went in there (on a weds evening), it was lively and pleasantly busy, with a really nice atmosphere that I always thought was lacking before. Had a chat with the new landlord and apparently he's got lots of plans for the place. Also, the food was excellent. Definitely recommend this pub!

This pub is such a disappointment. Characterless, usually only one ale pump working out of three, it feels unloved by the people who run it. The last two times I went there (with people from work, not through choice) I had to wait almost ten minutes to be served, the first time because the barman was having some kind of crisis and kept having to check his phone and run outside, the second because it was early-ish Friday evening, and hence all three bars were fairly full, yet there was only one member of staff on.
If you care for all the elements that make up a good pub: a choice of good ale, friendly efficient bar staff and a feeling that the people who run it actually care about more than just taking your money, then don't bother.

Dived in here a couple of Saturdays ago and found it reasonably quiet (it was early-ish though and perhaps custom is greater during the week?). It was a pleasant enough boozer; clean, neutral decor. Appeared to be trying to appeal to a broad cross-section of punters, although all in attendance on this occasion were under 30. All this did not make for an especially memorable or engaging atmosphere.
I should say the service was efficient and pleasant - a friendly welcome is far from assured in many pubs nowadays - and the ale was kept well. That said I was only in for a quick 'alf and in any event, there was only one active pump when I was there (Spitfire). I'd say they could do better on that front, but maybe the average customer here does not favour the real stuff (judging by the comments below extolling Oranjeboom and Asahi I fear this is the case). It isn't worth getting more ale in if it won't turn over.
All in all, an average experience, but perhaps a longer visit on a busier night, with one or two more ales to choose from, and I might be tempted back. Trouble is, for the likes of me this is just too close to the Star and the Nelson, and would have to be exceptional for it to feature in the running with such illustrious competition!

I love this place, here everyday after an early shift. The barmaids are beautiful and the barman is a legend! Only place i have been able to find Asahi on tap. Have spent many hours in this pub and plan to spend many more.
Keep it up guys n gals.

Nice chilled out atmosphere with a great range of beers (where else in the locality can you get Oranjeboom on tap?). Perfect for a pint or two after the commute home!
|
Very shiny and new looking. Beer okay but 11 for a burger!
|
great for the footy used to sell oranjeboom lager, dont know if it still does.
|
I went here for sunday roast and it was awful. what a waste of money.

Pub finally open again after refit!
|
Currently being refurbished. Not opening until mid-May, so this could be a major project!
|
great to hear its still good! havent been for over 2 years. Always found it to be local and friendly - and thats difficult to do well. Use it or lose it.

Great to find a really good Shepherd Neame pub in Brighton!
|
Oh the Caxton. How many hours have i spent in here, how much of my wage have i spent here. Great pub. The new owners are friendly and a good laugh, the pool table is useable again (it was Zebra print for a while?!) and the bar staff are lovely, friendly guys, friendly and beautiful women. What more could you ask for? On second thoughts, it's rubbish, never go there, keep away from my pub!
|
This pub is lovely! Really nice food, very friendly bar staf... went in there once after work in need of food and the kitchen was closed! However, the lovely manager made me a sandwich!! Bless! They have a nice outside area which is great in the summer... been going to this pub for over 4 years and will continue to!

Good pub and just around the corner from work! They do, of course, sell Tuaca which is so needed after a few drinks have settled in!!!
Great staff too and make you feel welcome

Popped in here while following (with a couple of slight changes) Brighton and Hove CAMRA's 'Best Brighton Pubs' crawl. Almost nobody in but then it was Christmas Eve. Had some Shepherd Neame Master Brew which was fine. This is another little Brighton local of the kind that should be cherished because 'you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone', as Joni Mitchell sang.
|
Popped in here for the first time last night and must say thought it was a smashing little pub. Barstaff were very friendly, as was the guvnor who even put my friend's music on when asked. Cosy - will definitely return.

Was brilliant, has recently been taken over and has lost any character it once had. And no, i'm not a local giving rubbish reviews trying to keep it local, i'm a regular with my nose out of joint!

Not a bad little place off the front somewhat but good if on a day trip.

Horrible place - couldn't find anyone that wanted a fight and no one in there has a clue about fashion - not a burberry check or baseball cap in sight. They even had the bare faced cheek to ask me to leave when I took my top off! Me, Kev, Tanya and Sharon won't be back - why anyone would go in here when West St is only another 5 mins walk from the station, I don't know!!

Come on locals - lets keep it to ourseleves. Review it as a terrible, rough pub. (It's great though isn't it)
|
Not the easiest to find but that keeps the day trippers away. Worth the effort, a lovely pub that deserves to attract more of the decent locals.
|
A good pub; I should go there more often. It's slightly off the beaten track (i.e. the main route from Brighton station to the seafront) and that's probably why it's a bit quiet. But the drinks are good, it's a well run pub, and there's plenty of place.

Not a bad little pub off of the auld man drag between Brighton station and the beach.
Had a pint there with the intended on Saturday and the staff and regulars were friendly and the beer was nice. We meant to go to the Evening Star up the road but it was rammed so it was good to find a decent place with a place to rest our weary frames.
There's nachoes, veggie and beef, all evening, a pool table, which some would care about, and some weird, sunken garden out the bakc for warmer days. Nice wee place.
