Ryans Bar, Purleyback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
visited this - in tyhe Brass Monkey incarnation - some months ago - perhaps a year . . . . It did need far more places for old fogeys like the present writer to rest their weary bones. But a nice place; seems it's now closed.
As closed now - I will not rate.

Regret that this has closed, it was a great local pub

Nice little pub, beer is ok, staff friendly but maybe a little quiet if you fancy a lively night out

I went to this pub and as Ryans and saw that it had changed to Brass Monkey so checked it out. Its a much smarter bar with a nice atmosphere and friendly attentive staff and reasonably priced cool crisp beer. I noticed a food bar and a pool table that were previously not there too. The new colour scheme is great and much more classy than the old colours - seems this pub is really on the up

Re named The Brass Monkey.

That was quick! It's only been open for a year!

This pub has now had a change of management - and for the better - its been refurbished, pool table etc and not the pub it used to be. Think a change of name is on the cards too ! So long Ryans!

With a name like "Ryan's Bar" you'd expect something slightly Irish, but you'd be wrong!
They've got three or four big screen TVs for the footy, and a mixture of the usual sofas, chairs and tables. The bar staff are friendly and attentive. Prices are ok, although a pint is about a quid more expensive than the Wetherspoons directly opposite.
However, you can't help but feel that the place is completely devoid of soul. Maybe it's the whitewashed walls combined with the high ceilings, or the exposed steel piping, but it's a really dull bar to drink. You can't relax. At the weekends it can get very busy, so everyone ends up crammed around the bar area because it's the only place you can put your pint down, which means you spend the whole night being pushed and shoved by passing patrons. Most of said patrons tend to be pissed-up Croydon boys as well, which doesn't help matters. The bar area is simply too small to accommodate this arrangement, and it's not helped by having stools at the bar which means you have to fight your way through people sat there in order to get a drink.
And Thai food? My culinary history was never too hot, but I didn't realise Thai green curry was a typical Irish dish. Combined with everything else, you leave the place with the impression that it doesn't really know what it's trying to be.

Chilled out wine bar, with music & tv's (although not overpowering), friendly bar staff, and sofas to relax on. Serves Thai food 6 days a week (excepting sundays), which while being a little pricey, is of a high quality.
