Fairly unassuming place but perfectly pleasant, imo. Was here for a Saturday lunch. Can't really report on the beer - didn't try any - but others in my group seemed content. Location is great - underneath the South Downs and minutes from footpaths along the River Arun. Our food was expensive but good and filling. Service was good but perhaps a a little over-fussy.

I stopped by this pub last Friday evening at around 9pm for a pint.

The bar was empty apart from a young lad sat at the bar. The restaurant was half full but it was apparent that the food service was winding down for the evening.

Shortly before finishing my pint, a man claiming to be the landlord came into the bar from the kitchen and proceeded to pour a tirade of abuse upon the young lass who had served me. I was stunned as he went on at her with every second word being the F word....

At this point I intervened and questioned the landlord as to why he felt it was ok to address his staff in such a manner and swear in front of a customer. Upon which he turned upon me and told me I could F... off. That as a landlord he was throwing me out. He then proceeded to threaten me and used physical intimidation to press his point. I held my temper, finished my drink and thanked the staff for their service, suggesting they might be wise to find a new employer, then departed.

I'm stunned that people think they can get away with this sort of behaviour.

Be warned!

Next stop, local press, Arun council licence department and the police.

The other beer on yesterday, Hammerpot Summer Ale, is a slightly cheaper £3.90. Prices still at the upper end of the spectrum though. Only a couple of drinkers in here on a weekday dinnertime, but the foodie area was very busy, which is where most of the staff's focus was.
All in all, a reasonable pub, just a tad pricey.

Not surprising they can afford 5 people servingt - £4.10 for a pint of locally mass produced Harvey's Sussex! Not for anyone who just wants a beer in the evening...: Takeaway Fish and chips are very good though.

They were fully booked on a Sunday lunchtime but as we were in just after 12 squeezed us in at a table that was booked for 2pm. Superb food, and the young women working there are very efficient.

Still managed to have an area for drinkers to sit so it's not just a food pub. If only we lived closer...

This was a famous venue for bar billiards when it was the White Horse (in the last century). Many fond memories of visits here.

Saturday 2/4 - going this evening with friends to celebrate our 51st anniversary, the sixth such visit. Always good, welcomed as friends, excellent value, especially if you get there before 7pm.

I would come here time and time again, reasonable sized portions, good hearty food, good wine choices, good sunday roasts. Very orientated towards food and the food is consistent and good value.

Staff quick and easy to communicte with considerting how busy it is and how young they are, usually at least 5 people serving. Not a lot of pubs can afford that nowadays

I am unsure as to which Ales they have as always had wine with a meal.

Highly recommend.

Very bad experience here. Waited over 20 minutes without being served despite requests. Staff surly when summoned. We left. Other patron commented that service slow in past also.

We were really impressed by this well run pub. We enjoyed 3 delicious courses on the Times offer. The meal was well paced, nicely garnished, tasty and served in clean cosy surroundings. The staff were really welcoming and helpful. The Harveys was well kept and the Thatchers Gold lovely.

We have been here for Sunday Lunch on a couple of occasions, the roast is wonderful, everything is homemade and or locally produced, yummy yorkshires, delicious gravy even the horseradish sauce is quite something and a massive bowl of roasties, unfortunately we have been full so fullon both occasions we have not been able to try one of the lovely desserts they look delicious. The staff are very so polite and friendly and it is all so very clean, glasses and cutlery sparkling. We will be going back again soon to take our familes
