user reviews of the Ferry Boat Inn, Ullapool

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A couple of well-kept pints of Deuchars IPA and staff with bad attitudes are what you'll find here, with not much else to say about the place.

Great News!! (hopefully). According to the Website was simply closed for refurbishment and should now be open again. Would be great to hear from someone on BITE that this is in fact the case as I live some way away!

Desperately sad to read about this. This was one of the best pubs I have ever been in and I have had many great nights in here. As mentioned the last incumbents seemed to have no feel for the soul of the place but they couldnt mess with the location and the views.

If pubs like this are closing there really is no hope for those of us who enjoy social drinking. May as well just buy a load of tins and drink them wherever we are permitted to. Crap times.

I cannot believe this place has closed. It used to be one of the best pubs in the UK and now it's gone. Hopefully someone local will buy it and run it for the local community instead of the idiots who were in before who destroyed the whole ambience of the place by knocking through and putting transport cafe tables in. Absolutely tragic.

i thought they couldn't make it worse but they have. on a positive note, the drink is better than it was. that's it though. i love a good juke box, i couldn't resist whacking rammstein and metallica on again but a juke box does NOT belong in this pub. who's idea was it to knock through and make it all one room? all atmosphere has now been completely destroyed and there's no going back now. the transport cafe tables are the cherry on the cake. so sad.

From the outside this looks to be a traditional waterfront tavern, but unfortunately inside it doesnt live up to these high expectations. The right hand bar seems to be very much a restaurant complete with open kitchen, whilst the left has more of a cafe/bar feel to it with its chunky pine tables and light wooden flooring.

It looks as though there may be some renovation work underway at one end theres a modern hearth with grey slate tiles behind, fresh maroon paintwork and recessed shelving in the wall that was storing logs for the wood burning stove. Elsewhere theres a patchy ceiling that looks to be work in progress, and rough plasterwork. Theres a relatively small corner bar at one end, and the window seats offer great views across the loch.

The food menu was fairly succinct, although didnt offer much in the way of pub grub dishes. Most of the mains were around the 11 mark, going up to as much as 21 for the lobster. There was also a small specials board that added another two or three choices. Portion sizes were very generous however.

Beers on tap were Caledonian 80, Deuchars IPA and Crofters Pale Ale. Cider choice was disappointing with just Strongbow and Magners.

oh dear. what have they done to it? it looks like a transport cafe with the new tables in and the beer was simply undrinkable. how to ruin a fantastic pub.

bit of a suprise to find a juke box in here so it must have new owners. it was most gratifying to play 'blackened' by metallica in such tranquil surroundings.

On previous visits to this pub, I've always felt like I was in a cafe/restaurant as opposed to a pub. On my latest visit it did have more of a pub feel. There are three pumps, one looked like it had been inactive for a while, one had the clip turned around and the third was selling Cairngorm Stag. We had two pints of the Stag, a porter type beer which was quite nice.
The windows command great views of Loch Broom and the jukebox was playing a good selection of music on our visit.
Having visited all the drinking establishments in Ullapool, this is easily the best pub in town.

Lovely location with great view from the pub windows. Food was good, and had two real Ales on. Deuchars and Caledonian 70. One member of staff new what he was doing with the Ale and was taking care over it and was very friendly. Unfortunately a lot of the staff did not know how to pull a proper pint and it was often a frothy mess and not a pint. The woman in the dining room was very terse and we nearly walked out because of her attitude. We were early diners in an empty restaurant and were not allowed a window seat as reserved, (although we new otherwise) the window seats were still empty when we left. As we were staying here it cost them the following nights meal, as we ate elsewhere instead despite the good quality of the food.

Small pub, and deservedly popular. Good ales, and no-nonsense pub food. Recommended.

A nice little pub on the front, the view of Loch Broom and the surrounding mountains from the front window is a great back drop to enjoy your beer in front of. When I visited An Teallach Ale was on sale and very nice it was too.

The first pub you pass if you drive in along Ullapool's sea wall. Small and full of character, and that's not just the Yorkshire landlord. Two hand pulled beers.
