Perfectly positioned at the top of the village, overlooking the green. Would be wonderful on a summer's day.
Accomodation: Not obvious that my room was no en suite on booking but I had the shared bathroom to myself.
Food: Excellent value for money and service.
Beer: Timothy Taylor Golden Best, Black Sheep and North Yorkshire Moors from Cropton Brewery.

I visited while on a really good walk with my dad around the beautiful valley and the railway.
The pub is situated at the head of the stunning village. We sat out at the front on the green. My poor dad had to stick to a shandy as he was driving, but I had a pint of the local Cropton Two Pints. It was in top condition.
Somewhere I fancy for a meal in the future. The menu looked good and reasonably priced for the location.

Currently staying in the village due to working in the area. We've been in the pub every night and it's a real little cracker. Two handpulls on (Black Sheep and Landlord) which are both really well kept. We haven't eaten in here but the food looks and smells fantastic and the staff are really friendly.
Seriously, give it a go!

A recent visit left us wanting more!!!!
Food was fantastic, cooked to perfection without any major delay. Service again was great, the chef even popped out to make sure we'd enjoyed our meals before we left.
While its not far enough away for us to justify staying we will be recommending it to friends and relatives when they are visiting the area.
Certainly a perfect excuse for drive up in the Spitfire when the weather permits!

My husband and I visited the horeshoe inn two weeks ago and what a shock we had, the pub has lost all its charm,the food was average nowhere near the quality of the last owners,and the pub was empty obviousely others think the same,we wont be back,

Whatever the history might be, just ignore it. This is a great place to visit. The beer is fair and there's a decent range available as long as you are happy with fairly mainstream bitter.
It is geared up for food in a big way, which is understandable given its location and the food is superb. Great portions and excellent quality.
I went with a few friends and we stayed in the accommodation annexe which was very clean and comfortable.
The new owners deserve to be given a chance as they are clearly making every effort to make the place successful. Give it your support and I'm sure you won't regret it.

we stayed in a lovely cottage in Levisham last week. The pub was shut at 9 . When we went to book a table we were told we could only eat with the residents at 7! I feel that this is a great shame for the village as these owners don't care about anyone but themselves and it will probalbly go bust and the village won't have a pub anymore. Go to the Fox & rabbit.

We have recently moved from Levisham after residing next to the Horseshoe Inn for over 7 years. During that time we supported both the previous owner/landlord and Jules and Paul the present owners. During this period the major problem that we saw for the Horseshoe was that the majority of the local people never supported the pub, and only required it for special occasions, i.e. Christmas etc.
Being in business myself I fully realise that you are unable to run a business like this without going bankrupt.
What Jules and Paul have attempted to do is try and attract customers from further afield.
During our time in Levisham we have only ever found Jules, Paul and their staff to be most welcoming and friendly and their food to be of a high standard. That is why we decided, after looking at many venues, to hold our wedding reception at the Horseshoe. This was for 80 people and all we can say is that every person that attended was most impressed and all complemented on the high standard of food, accomodation and service.
My personal thoughts are that you will never please all of the local residents of Levisham, neither of the last two owners have managed this. Also it is interesting that most complaints on this site are anonymous, I think this shows a lot about the character of these people.
I would like to wish not only Jules and Paul but also Betty and Stewart all the very best for the future and we will continue to support and recommend them.

My wife and myself have just returned from a delightful refreshing weekend at the Horseshoe Inn at lovely Levisham. By chance we discovered this wonderful country Inn returning from Whitby 2 years ago and have since stayed there a number of times alone and with my wifes mother and my 82 year old mother they love it. The food is locally sourced, fine Yorkshire produce and cooked to perfection by resident chef Paul and his team. We always receive a hearty welcome from Jules the landlady and her father Stuart. We arrived strangers and departed well fed friends. This pub and its food, hospitality and service is a real Jewel in North Yorkshires'Crown. Long may you continue providing an excellent service to the people of Yorkshire and surrounding areas. We are more than happy to commend your wonderful hotel (as the Yorkshire life has done) to locals and visitors alike. Believe us we have travelled a round trip of 230 miles for Sunday lunch it really is that good!!! We look forward to our December visit. Best wishes, Philip& Kerry Heggie and family.

As a local of Levisham, I can shed some more light on the Horseshoe. We have heard a lot more �reviews� from people first-hand that come and stay in the village and you all sound like you get off lightly!! (Except Philalltime!)
The villagers are also made to feel unwelcome by the current owners and now we all drink in the Fox and Rabbit! The pub is closed by 9:30pm most nights and has killed the atmosphere of the village completely.
In my opinion, if you are looking for a pub that welcomes walkers, families, and offers superior food, try the Fox and Rabbit in Lockton, its hard to beat!!

We have stayed at this pub last week and I can only describe this as "An Oasis in the North Yorkshie Moors",I think the best way to describe the "Horseshoe Inn" is Excellent Food, Excellent Service and Excellent selection of wine.
We were made to feel at home and very welcome and that is not always the case these days. We will certainly return

After a gruelling walk our party of 9 were ready for some refreshment and food. We visited the Horseshoe Inn which on first impression looked and felt very warm and welcoming...how wrong we were!! Food was being served 'till 2pm so at 1.45 we tried to order to be told they had stopped serving. At 2.30pm we tried to purchase some more refreshments to be told that the Pub was now closed. Feeling very disgruntled by the ladladys miserable and rude attitude we began preparing to leave. As we were doing this to our anger a couple (obviously non walkers) entered the pub and were promply served with sandwiches and beer which they ordered. As we were leaving the pub we then encountered the equally miserable and rude landlor. When we asked for some form of explanation as to why we had been refused service when others hadn't we were asked if we had nothing better to do than drink beer all afternoon. We were ushered out of the pub and the front door was unceramoniously slammed closed on us. Not satisfied with this the landlady then appeared at the window and gave us all the 'V' to send us on our way. I wouldn't recommed this Pub to any one. One to avoid at all costs!

I went with my family to this pub for a meal about 2 months ago and we had a very frosty reception from the landlady and the guy behind the bar. There were children in our party and when asked if they did childrens meals we were simply told no and given no alternatives. It wasnt until we decided to leave that the landlady reluctantly agreed to do bangers & mash for the kids so we stayed. The food was very nice but the service was abysmal. I couldnt wait to get out of there, the atmosphere was so strained and unpleasant.
My sister visited the pub a couple of weeks ago and the landlady and barman were very rude to them. They wanted to order food but the glacial reception they recieved prompted them to do otherwise and they simply walked out, drinks untouched. This used to be a warm and friendly pub where everyone was welcome but sadly this has all changed

We visited this pub at 9 p.m. last Tuesday. The lights were on and there were people inside, but the door was locked! Nobody took any notice of our knocking at the door although we could see they knew we were there. We used to visit the Horseshoe often in the past, as you could be sure of a good meal and a good pint. Families, locals and walkers were always there when we called in. Is "not answering the door" worse than "appalling service"?? There was definitely "no room at the Inn" for us.

As somebody else has already posted "great food, appalling service"! First visited this pub in June 2006 for a meal but when I asked at the bar to order food, I was told in no uncertain terms that she was unable to take my food order for at least half an hour as she had a number of customers to serve that had reserved their table in advance. Visited again last week and got the same, if not worst service! Again, we had not booked but when I asked at the bar to order, was told again that her reserved customers were to be served first - but was rather annoyed when two larger parties arrived at the pub for food (who had not booked) and they got served first!!! The landlady certainly has an 'attitude' and although the food is out of this world I would certainly think twice about re-visiting which is rather a shame!

We walked the Hole of Horcum round today and had a great stop at this pub - good beer, excellent food and a very warm welcome for walkers of whom there were lots. We've not been before which may be the difference between us and the previous reviewers, or else things have changed dramatically. What a tragedy! This once fantastic pub, which used to welcome one and all (families, couples, walkers and locals alike), has now been turned into a completely inappropriate, snooty posh-nosh "restaurant" - so much so that I don't even think it should be classified as a pub anymore. A group of us (6 or 7) stay for a weekend in Levisham every couple of years and after a good day's walking we all used to eat and drink at the pub. We were welcomed and the place had a great atmosphere. Food, service and beer were all excellent - a very enjoyable experience. That's all gone now - it couldn't really be more different. The bar stools have gone from the bar. The great blue and gold carpet has been taken up. The place is being run like a restaurant and is clearly being aimed at couples wanting a quiet meal with a bottle of wine and then off home. Anyone else doesn't appear welcome. We walked in at 7pm on a Saturday evening to be met (and I won't say "greeted") by a stern faced woman whose behaviour and attitude made it plainly clear that we were not welcome. We asked if we could eat and were told, in a very condescending and rude way, that all the tables were booked. We drank our pints in record time and took our custom elsewhere, feeling both angered at the rude treatment and greatly saddened by the village's loss of a great "pie & pint" pub. We all hope, as do the villagers by all accounts, that this ill-placed venture soon realises it's short comings and moves on, leaving the pub to someone who will return it to it's former glory.

Landlady (And that's being polite) was extremely rude, unfriendly and very condesending. This used to be one of the best, friendliest pubs around where you could have a great drink and some excellent food, but has recently changed hands. My advice would be to stay away and hope that somebody a bit more polite and with some manners takes over and returns this pub back to one of the best around.
It used to welcome families and walkers alike, but no longer. A great shame and will now have to think twice about going back to Levisham (Sadly).

Great food, appalling service.
Set in a small village on the moors near the steam railway this pub is in a top location for walkers and tourists. The bar maid was however down right rude and refused to take a large order at our table, bring menus help us calculate the bill, or even give change for �10 notes. She complained to another customer that we were dithering. The credit card machine was also not working. This was on a bank holiday sunday
