My first stop in Gosforth was the Gosforth Hotel, on the corner at a set of traffic lights. It's very much a locals pub and was busy on my Wednesday evening visit. Sky Sports News was showing on the TV. 6 ales were on. The 2 regulars are Allendale Pennine Pale & Mordue Workie Ticket. Guests were Sonnet 43 Aurora, Sharps Doom Bar, Hadrian Border Grainger Ale & Adnams Ghost Ship. A CAMRA discount is promoted. It turned out to be one of Gosforth's better pubs.

I'm the current manager of the Gosforth Hotel and would just like to let people know who haven't been in the pub for a while the changes we have made: 1) the beer we sell is now predominantly local from Mordue, Allendale and other great local breweries, we have just been rewarded for our hard work by being included in the good beer guide 2014. 2) the smell which lingered in the pub for many years has been removed, this was due to poor house keeping and not cleaning a sump in the cellar, so easy to solve. Pop in and give us a try and post you comments on here to let us know your views.

Visited last Sunday for the first time since last year. Had a good range of ales (as usual) but my first pint, Doombar, was strangely tasteless and my second, Deuchars IPA, was so watery I couldn't drink it at all. I drink these beers regularly and know how they should taste, very disappointing.

A pub of two halves. The front bar is truly awful and smells of the toilets that lead off it. The back snug though is a great little place. I would give the food a miss though.

Popped in on a Friday teatime. Fine if you like being confronted with sweaty hairy crevices the owners of which appeared to be divorced builders all moaning about how much the 'ex-missus was taking them for'. Language was beyond choice and very loud. Distinctly offish bar staff. Got a definite feeling of 'we don't like strangers around these parts' - but the locals appeared to get served easily enough. Very average pint of Fullers London Pride. Pity as the building seems to be a proper old style Pub - gernerally speaking the sort of place I would go out of my way to visit. Won't be going back here for a while though.

The first copies of Viz Comic were sold in this pub, in the room above when they had bands on.1979. Chris Donald had to leg it back to his Mam and Dads house in Jesmond for more, because they'd sold all the copies. That's The Gosforth Hotel's claim to fame.

I popped into the back bar on a sunday night with a couple of friends a few weeks ago. It was a quiet evening with about 10 others in the bar. At 10.50pm the barmaid rang last orders. I went up to the bar and stood next to a man who was getting served. When she finished serving him the barmaid left the bar for about a minute. On her return she ignored me and started talking to a group of men. I asked for service and she said she'd called time. She clearly had no intention of serving me. This type of service is terrible and not uncommon according to others I have spoken to recently. Such a shame considering what a great pub it once was. I shall not reurn.

visited with a friend Tuesday 11/08/09 6.30pm. ordered two pints of Landlord, both really sour and returned. Replaced with London Pride, both sour and this time friend returned the beer and came back with two pints of Black Sheep. Barely drinkable, we left soon after and did not finish our beer. Give this place a miss.

I popped in a couple of days ago: the bogs must have had a deep clean as they smelt quite fresh and fragrant for a change. Long may it last.

Was a canny little pub a few years back but I was back over easter visiting family and popped in for a few pints. I'd have to be honest and say it's ok but nothing to write home about. I completely agree with previous comments, the bar staff rate as some of the worst. Not a smile in sight which says a lot for the bar manager, if she's miserable, she makes the rest miserable.
|
It hasn't improved - but it is now better than the County - still this is more an enditement of the County than praise for how the Gosforth Hotel is being run. I go to the JOB bulman to use the loo and then pop back for another pint! Is this legal? Food is cheap & cheerful

I quite liked the pub after the revamp, but there is an un comfortable atmosphere in there, people want to know your business and dont give you the privacy you need to have a quiet afternoon drink with friends, Kerry the new manager who had taken over after a woman who looked like she just came from bay route "rough", oh new manager! i thought wrong she is the most miserable and ignorant person ive ever been served off, not a smile in sight or a thank you, its the same regulars whom stand in the same place at the bar talking about other people and making the place look un tidy, the air conditioning has not been working for a long time and im believed to think that they cant afford to fix it, its not nice when there are punters who dont decide to wash themselves and urinate over themselves instead of the urinals,oh a bit of air freshner will do Kerry says
|
Manky, same old alcoholics everyday standing in the doorway with a fag.
Staff friendly enough except "Kerry" the bar manager who has a false smile and miserable attitude, practically snaps at you and ignores you when speaking to her which is a shame as you're trying to be sociable. Not a good bar manager.

Pub has improved over last 12 but Gents toilets still rank as worst in Gosforth.
New friendlier staff since "The Skirt" moved on (gawd she was a miserable cow) and they seem less uptight since she left.
Food is ok, but it's just all reheated frozen stuff. Usually pop in most days.

what a disapointment. remember the gosforth as a great cask ale pub. Not anymore. Beer was rank had to leave three quaters of a pint. And yes the toilets are a disgrace.
|
Was open dead on 11am which is a bonus these days. Had the bottled brown ale and was offered a pint or a half pint glass which is the tradition and nice to see. Other than that it was mediocre and yes the khazi DID stink.
|
It's had a minor facelift, but the toilets rank as the worst in Gosforth. They are absolutely disgusting.
Since the facelife, the bar no longer smells like a public toilet. Jukebox is cool and Blossom Hill White at 5.99 a bottle is superb value that just can't be beaten.
Barmanager/Landlady leaves a lot to be desired, if she smiled now and again and maybe wore something other that a denim skirt everyday the atmosphere might improve.

Great pint of Spitfire and better value food than Spoons, very welcoming aswell and a decent juke box, 8/10

Great beer, staff ok, preprocessed food, quiet back room, awful disgusting stinking vile gents toilets. They gave the place a lick of paint end of 2006 - and inexplicably they did nothing to gents. The only way to fix them would be to dismantle the whole wc. Don't sit in the seats opposite the gents - you'll regret it!!

Always very busy. Good beers on hand pump go down a treat. Worth a visit - possibly the best pub in Gosforth.
|
well what can i say about this pub?! It stinks and i mean stinks needs to sort the mens toilets out they stink the pub out.. and the manager what a miserable cow she is not very good with customers and as far as the assistant manager is concerned what a waste of space he is, i tell you what tho the rest of the bar staff are great really friendly if it were up to us customers the staff and the supervisors should run that place

A fine selection of ales (normally a couple of mordues plus bombardier, pedigree, landlord and one or two guests) Plus the usual draughts, wines, bottles etc. They have recently started serving food, menu looks quite nice although I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Nice atmosphere and decor - I panicked a little when it was refurbished recently but very little was changed (well done!). Staff know their stuff, very friendly and helpful. A great pub.
