Sweeney's Bar, Chelmsfordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Hopefully closed for good. I've nothing good to say about this pub (except that it's closed)

A tacky pub with toilets difficult to use and an untidy kitchen which can be easily seen from the bar area. Give it a miss.

Undoubtedly the best pub in Chelmsford for a pint. Small and crowded with the usual Irish pub tat (flags and the like) it has a great atmosphere, comfy seating and good beer. Staff are always great, good selection of bar food nibbles and it is the sort of place you can sit down in at 7pm and leave at 11pm, never having moved a metre but seen the world pass through its doors, really great. Wish they would spend a few quid on the toilets though!

The first time I went in this pub a drunken Irish man propped up at the bar informed me in no uncertain terms that they shouldn't be serving English people in here. There was me thinking it was in the middle of Chelmsford! However, I've been a few times since without any problems so I can only presume his attitude isn't the norm for this pub, which is a decent boozer despite being a little cramped.

not a bad boozer at all. would be worth any O'Neills drinker's money to take a trip to see what could be done to present a reasonable irish bar. beer is good quality and a cracking range of sport on the box.

this is one pub unless you know the area or have a map (or a friend that knows the pub) you would have trouble finding , words fail me with this pub , excellent doesnt come close , a small irish bar , as soon as we walked in the barmaid said hello , brilliant beer , one fruit machine which paid out quite well to us , this pub must be the hidden gem of the chelmsford circuit , always used the chain pubs when in chelmsford but thanks to a good friend of mine ive now found my new watering hole in chelmsford , the only downside is it quite small but in a way cosy , we went in around 2pm during the week and there was 7 people inluding the barmaid , this has to be the number 1 pub in chelmsford . for people that wana try it walk down high street keep eye on right for amusement arcade with a alley way next to it , go down the alley way and turn right the pub is there.

I received a warm welcome here, the pint was good and I stayed much longer than I intended.

Nice Irish pub in a quiet side street right in the town centre. Walls are adorned with the usual Irish bric-a-brac including a full set of Gaelic football (or are they hurling? Never could tell the difference) shirts hanging from the ceiling, but this feels homely rather than tacky as is so often the case. Drinks are good and not too pricey and the barstaff are friendly. Quite cramped inside but seats are comfy and atmosphere convivial. Nice place to escape the outside world. Not normally too busy either so not claustrophobic. I like to drink in here every time I vist Chelmsford and have never had less than an excellent experience here. Check out one of the best hidden treasures in Essex.
