Barristers at the Swan Hotel is probably the pick of the bunch in Bolton. The choice was'nt great when we went but what we had was excellent. Busy place. Quite a buzz.

I added this pub not because of the swan but because of its sister pub across the courtyard (Barristers). 8 real ales consisting of a permanent Moorhouses 'Blonde witch' along with local brewers Bank Top 'Port O Call'. Open Mic nights every thursday and the legendary Martin on the piano every Friday and Saturday. This place is never going to be the same again without the true gentleman that was Robin.

"Barristers" is a GBG entry and has eight handpulls. Six were available on Saturday lunchtime. Fullers ESB, Hooky Gold and Old Speckled Hen were three of the guest ales that had unfortunately followed me up from the South. Ossett Big Red was IMO probably the best of the remaining brews available. The bar is quite dark and atmospheric and the staff are friendly. Finding the gents is a challenge!

Only use 'Barristers' side of the pub, which has a good range of cask ales in tip-top condition and at very reasonable prices - Spitfire for 1.80 a pint. I believe the licensee (or former licensee?) got the smoking ban martyrdom he was seeking - and a very big bill!

well one landlord in Bolton got fined 10,000 this week - suspect it was this one

ive worked at the swan
in the morning there use to be hundreds of beer flies, the place ignores so many health and safety rules its unbelievable, the prices change at 6pm every day to stupid amounts, and the dj never plays anything new!!!
the only good thing about the swan is barristers next door, sadly it is to small

So this is the pub where the landlord decided to flout the smoking ban when it came in? How did it go/ Does he still allow you to smoke in the pub?

Was in on Saturday night, the DJ dropped a bit of UB40 'Rat in my kitchen'. Quality. Whether or not it was also a warning about the hygiene standards, I don't know. Certainly one of our party was taken ill, but this may have been the effects of a pint in Horwich earlier in the evening.

It used to have a great night every thursday - soul, motown etc. For some reason it stopped, though the pub is well appointed and the staff are friendly and helpful
