A very nicely preserved pub slightly off the beaten track but probably all the better for it. Good choice of beers and knowledgeable staff, comfortable and cosy.

Good beer, polite staff, spacious all good!

Without doubt the standout pub on my recent trip over the border.

The welcome was warm with the barmaid being more than hospitable.

By some law of synchronicity as I was talking to a friend on entering the pub we was discussing if Thornbridge brew stouts and porters. Our questions was immediately answered and by god was it good!

Vanilla Stout to be precise. It was the best pint of the day by a country mile.

The pub itself was cosy and warm with a traditional feel.

Best pub in the city.

Still a top pub for me - evocative of a street corner local of times gone by only with an excellent pint (Idle's Idle Dog in this instance).

Excellent survival from the thirties. Some debate among my friends about the quality of the beer, but I thought the quality of my Tetleys was more than acceptable (so there)

Old style blues on Wednesday, good but I had to leave it was just too cold in here. The blue decor in the small bar just made me feel colder. Light the fire please. The other bar was just fine. I have to mark it down because of the cold.

Traditional backstreet boozer not far from the university district of Sheffield. The interior wasn't quite as impressive as I'd expected, but is still quite impressive. There are 2 rooms, both with access to the bar. Ales on were Tetley Bitter, Daleside Special, Salamander Dark Crystal, Abbeydale Deception & Northumberland Angel of the North. One further pumpclip was turned. Cider was a keg Pheasant Plucker. A nice pub to include in a Sheffield crawl, but not an essential if you're pressed for time.

Our second (and third) visits. Always a friendly welcome. Beers kept well. Lovely pint of Abbeydale Deception...

Has some nice ornate pub architecture, the windows being of particular note, not sure if that makes it National Inventory material though. Beers are good. Has 2 rooms, one is a fair bit smaller than the other.
Abteilung - 21 Apr 2011 19:29
2 bar pub which is in the National Inventory, although the interior didn't really do it for me probably because of the sheer gloominess of the place. I think there were about 6 ales on but well kept with the emphasis on microbreweries. Go during the day when you can see more!
Booze_Allen - 20 Apr 2011 16:13
Great back street pub, realy worth popping into if you're visiting sheffield. The beer range is pretty decent, everything from a wheatbeer to real ales and more.
johnk24 - 18 Mar 2011 15:36
Excellent little corner pub which has been lovingly restored. Nice pint of Zenith from SBW Brewery (also had Idle Brewery and others on as well). Sadly the bar staff were not very friendly which kinda spolit our visit- but we would go back again. (It's also very close to other good pubs in this part of town - University Arms/Old House/Devonshire Cat etc). Get off the tram at West Street.

An excellent street corner local on the edge of the city centre where modern blocks end and old streets begin. Has old fashioned snug & parlour layout in classic style and proper locals populating the place. Ideal set if they wish to redo 'I Didn't Know You Cared'. Had a top rate pint of Abbeydale Deception. For me this is the best pub in Sheffield.

The first thing that catches the eye in this pub is the sympathetic restoration of the 1930's interior; A feat which has garnered this pub a CAMRA design award and a place on the national inventory of historic interiors. The lounge is a mixture of wood and tiling; the snug is smaller and sofa-oriented. Its a welcoming place with a relaxed atmosphere and, on my visit, featured Abbeydale Deception, Tetley's Bitter, Derwent W&M Mild and others beside. Deception, a straw-coloured pale ale, went down nicely. Another one in Sheffield that is definitely worth a visit.

Great pint of Abbeydale Deception to start off the session in Sheffield. Well worth a visit. Devonshire Cat next...

My visit was made 2 days ago on a Sheffield crawl. A must visit for anybody who likes a traditional pub.

Called in by chance, while researching my family history, mum and dad met and fell in love in this pub in 1949. married in 1950 (dec) and celebrate their 60th anniversary this year...... good selection of beers.. Jenno
Jenno - 16 Feb 2010 11:13
Known the Bath for 25 years and it is still one of the best pubs in a great city for beer and bars. I always seem to turn up there when it's very quiet, and I'm therefore worried about its viability (hope I'm wrong). So please read the accurate and useful reviews for the last 6 months and then go and give this excellent place your custom
Arctium_lappa - 10 Jan 2010 17:32
Usually empty on my infrequent visits, but the pub is certainly worth a stop if you like traditional pubs with traditional beers alongside others not found elsewhere.
One side is a large room with a tiled floor whilst the other side comprises a cosy snug with gas fire.
Just off West Street and the supertram network, give it a try, just hope there somebody in when you visit .

Despite the hotel label, the Bath has the feel of a locals back street pub rather than anything to do with tourism. It was last materially altered in the 1930s and has earned a place on the CAMRA inventory for historic pub interiors. By rights the pub should not exist as, according to the pub history on display, the initial 1867 lease stipulated that the building must not be used as a pub or a beerhouse. Despite being granted a licence in the early 20th century, the lease and its covenant are still valid although I suspect not many people have found it necessary to enforce the rule.

The interior is divided 2 bars. The decent sized main bar has a striking chessboard tiled floor, brick chiney breasts, built in padded pews and a simplistic approach. A large personalized Bath Hotel mirror has pride of place on the wall and there is a darts area but no other distractions like TVs, jukeboxes, pool tables etc although there appears to be a small but thriving music scene going by the flyers on the tables. A tiled lobby leads to a quaint but quite small, carpeted snug bar at the rear with a predominatly blue colour scheme its own small service hatch.

There were 5 hand pumps 3 Ales, 1 Porter and a Scrumpy albeit my visit was some time ago and I made no notes other than one of them was Anchor Steam Beer. The lunchtime food was quite basic but very cheap and good for a quick snack. I could have happily spent more time there than I had available but would certainly look to seek the place out again next time I am in town even if it is a bit tucked away off the beaten track.

Unbelievable pub. When I walked in, I thought I was in a cross between the pubs in "Goodnight Sweetheart" and "Life On Mars" - absolutely superb. Fine choice of ales as excellent prices. I would recommend everyone to visit this place!!
King_Viv - 4 Nov 2009 19:49
Abbeydale Moonshine, Thorne Best Bitter, Sheffield Brewery Blanco Blonde, White Rose Buddha the Stout, Tetley (the) Bitter, bottle fridge with some belgian stylees (eg Chimay Blue, 9%, 3). Flat-iron style building with a U-ish shaped central bar running in contrary direction to outer design. Tiled floors throughout, low ceiling, mustard walls, main bar has windows either end & wood-backed leatherette settles surrounding the whole with accompanying tables & stools but an open area at the bar itself which features wood bar surround & large choice of whiskies. Smaller side room fairly plain but would be cosy in winter if that fireplace is functional. Sketchy notes (hic) suggest a stained glass window featuring Bath Hotel, & a dartboard without oche (occasional use?). The walls carried a couple of splendid prints of blues musos; shame they were for sale rather than permanent for the pub. There was a good local feel to the place, a comfortable chatty atmosphere & end-of-day crossword comparisons in swing around the bar. Another good one for the lucky burghers of Sheffield. Seems Quinno was not using the tram (dayrider 3), which has stops nearby at West St stn & Univ of Sheff stn.

Wedged-shaped (or flying-V if you like) corner pub with a really stunning interior (and to a certain extent, the exterior - check out the photos Ive uploaded.), with the pub separated into two distinctly separate rooms dcor-wise; a lounge bar and public bar. The main bar is in the public area but theres also a nice little serving hatch in lounge bar if you can get the barmans attention! 4 ales normally available (one was turned on my visit); my Sheffield Brewery Mild was pretty good. Daily papers were available .sadly, like the Red Deer up the road, this place was empty at a time when I would have expected so see customers. Again, I guess this must be down to there being a lack of students as my visit was outside of term-time. I would have loved to have stayed for longer but time was running short by this stage. I will make a point of returning when next in the city it really is a place I could have spent all night in. Overall, highly recommended and worth the longish walk from the train station.

A gem just off the bustle and neon of West Street. Excellent Moonshine, well worth the walk from Totley
MrAverage - 17 Jun 2009 17:15
Popped in here after looking it up in the GBG, first pint of Milestone "Sup Porter" was divine so stayed and sampled another ale from their vast well kept selection,7/10
fat_beer_badger - 17 Jun 2009 16:12
While the ale is more than adequate at this delightful establishment, atmosphere and ambiance are really the big draws. The interior is, as mentioned, delightful and the staff are friendly and interested.

Traditional, wedge-shaped pub just off West Street, close to the University.

The Bath Hotel is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors for its tiled interior and original glasswork.

There's 2 interconnecting bars, the lounge bar with the tiled floor and a more comfortable snug.

It's surprising that a pub like this, so close to the University and the studenty areas, hasn't had the benefit of a "tasteful refurbishment" and has retained its unspoilt, old-fashioned feel.

The pub is another Good Beer Guide regular, offering several beers from local micros. I enjoyed the Acorn Barnsley Bitter in here on my visit.

This pub is well worth seeking out - you can get the tram from Castle Square to West Street, which is near.

Was in again on Saturday. Excellent beer quality again. I forgot to mention that the Mexican is called Que-Tal. Ate there on Saturday as well which was also excellent (it's better than it looks from the outside)
ROBCamra - 9 Mar 2009 11:29
It is a bit surprising that this traditional pub has maintained its character intact without being 'done up' (or 'done over', as so often seems to happen). Also quite unusual to have retained such a place this close to a main city street. A good selection of five real ales, with the Abbeydale Moonshine (a 4.3% pale ale) providing excellent refreshment, and efficient staff. Recommended.
rpadam - 28 Feb 2009 15:43
Great end of terrace pub with a very smart interior. Well kept cask ales from an ever changing range. Fast service and friendly locals. Always call in here for one when in Sheffield. There's a decent Mexican restaurant just down the road as well.
ROBCamra - 28 Jan 2009 11:01
Superb pub. Old fashioned interior, good service and well kept ales. Don't bother searching for a decent place in West Street - just come in here.
alexw123 - 29 Sep 2008 11:26
Beautiful well preserved back street boozer not far from University or West Street tram stops. Enjoyed a lovely chewy pint of Saltaire Challenger Special. Recommended.
Slake - 25 Aug 2008 15:02
Laid back and friendly two room back street boozer with original tiling. 5 guest casks from small breweries and a cask of Tetley Bitter as a regular. Food served between 12 and 3, but not on a Sunday.

This is one of the pubs in Sheffield that most impressed me. The other was the University Arms. And it's difficult to say which impressed me most.

The Bath Hotel however, is more in keeping with a working class area. A back street gem. Stunning tiled floors and bar area, and a front snug where the wall benches are upholstered in a beautiful and stunning blue leather. Built at the Victorian height of pub building, when pubs were at the heart of the community, and people stayed in their local all night. This place has an old fashioned charm and character not seen in the corporate, anonymous rubber stamp of a JDW or All Bar One. A little treasure to be treasured.

Fantastic little oasis amongst the awful bars surrounding it on West Street!
ega06tsshef - 11 Apr 2008 23:17
Agree with all previous reviews. A veritable haven from the lager-drinkers'/students' paradise a hundred yards away.
garydenton - 5 Feb 2008 15:59
Proper Olde Worlde pub. Hidden away, just off the main West Streep drinking strip. Plenty of real ales, and Schneider Weisse on tap. Definitely worth visiting for a pint or 4!
Paulaner - 12 Jan 2008 01:06
This pub is reet gradely and champion. Get there and sup up.
johnandcarol - 2 Jun 2007 16:27
Fantastic little pub. Great range of beers. Well worth a visit when in the area
TheHorsesMouth - 24 May 2007 13:23
Nice little pub tucked away near West Street. Good choice of around 7 real ales, virtually all from microbreweries from all over Britain.
IanC - 25 Apr 2007 16:06
Ver good range of hand pulled ales and along with The Red Deer, its one of the few real ale pubs around West Street.A clean, well kept pub and well worth several visits.
anonymous - 6 Sep 2005 08:56
Well worth seeking out it's a superb pub a stones-throw from the university student's West Street drinking area. Old-fashioned interior, with some stained glass, also tiled walls and floor. Real ale available including local guests.
