What a disappointment this place was!
It does look lovely from the outside but inside was a bit depressing really.
However the whole visit was spoiled by the appalling language and behaviour of the locals! I am not a prude I have been to some of the roughest pubs in the country but this place for some reason felt very rough a real surprise indeed!
Won't be back.

Big family carvey pub. Worth going to because it's independant and most of these places have been bought up by faceless chains. Sometimes too busy, but I don't suppose they will complain.

We went as a group for a 65th birthday. The youngest of our group was 6 months, but small for her age, but can sit unaided and hold her head. She uses a high chair at home so we asked for a high chair...no problem they said on the phone. However when we saw the high chair it was completely unsuitable for a child under the age of one. Although had a tray it had not straps what so ever!!! When mentioned to the waitress she shrugged her shoulders, when mentioned to the manager he said it was a H & S...RUBBISH. My six month old had to sit in the pushchair...luckily we had it in the car!!! We have since checked with H & S and they said they have never heard of this ruling. It is more than likely that high chairs with strap do not fit in with the nice wooden decor, the high chairs are wooden and non adjustable. If you have a child under one and wish to go here bring your own travel high chair that sits on a normal chair, your child will slip down in their ones, and at worst could injure themselves. Food is good, carvery meat can be a bit fatty on a bad day but they have an excellent selection of vegetables. Waitress service is very slow and they can be unhelpful. Manager spends his time hiding behind bar looking at bits of paper...reluctant to help. When busy service is very very slow.

18 of us had lunch at the carvery on 10 April. The pub looks great outside and in. Unfortunately, the service really let down the enjoyment of the meal (but was still included in the bill). Specifically 3 of the childrens meals arrived late as did two of the drinks; staff seemed frosty and unfriendly, and when asked why there was no turkey included in the carvery when this had been asked for and promised the day before, the attitude was too bad, there's nothing we can do about it. The food was tasty enough, but we wouldn't go back.

This is a decent pub that will offend nobody, run well with a giant restaurant area and owned and run by the people who run the great Squires Fish and Chip restaurant down the road. Not an inspiring place or a drinkers pub however.

This is THE best pub for a lovely Sunday roast. The variety of vegetables are outstanding.

Old thatched pub.
worth traveling to for food.
always busy for food , worth booking or turning up early to avoid disappointment.
Loads of parking.

Given that the chef won 'Pub Chef of the Year' in 2003 I couldn't fault the food although my impression of the specials is that they are primarily competition winners rather than a reflection of local tastes. The only cask ale is Bass which seems odd given that there are several excellent breweries in the region. Staff efficient but slightly offhand. Given the high standard of Devon pubs this one doesn't stand out as much as it might if located elsewhere.
