Not been in for 8 years, but not really a lot changed, thank goodness, apart from a seating area added. Beer still excellent, but busy even at a Tuesday lunchtime.

My first pub in Hexham (I say Hexham, but it's a few miles outside the centre) was the Dipton Mill Inn. Set in a dip in the road, it's a lovely location. Leave your mobile phone at home, as there no chance of a signal here. That leaves the pub to focus on conversation, decent ales and cider and also decent food. The Hexhamshire Brewery is on site and all ales were from them - Devil's Elbow, Cragnook Well & Whapweasel. The cider was Sandford Orchards Devon Mist. I enjoyed a nice and unusual curry here, as Saturday was curry night. Great atmosphere. Worth making the effort to seek out.

Paid a visit on the strength of the reports. Beers were excellent but not at all impressed by steak pie with a stick on microwave crust.

Popped in here on a sunny weekday lunchtime on my travels through Northumberland. What a treat, it's the brewery tap for the Hexhamshire brewery and they had six ales on offer. Managed to sample five (halves of course!), all very nice too. Interior is quaint with a single small bar and comfy tables & chairs for drinkers & diners alike, as well as a sunny garden out back. Food was tasty as well. Definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

An exellent pub all round. The beers were well priced and well kept. The whapweasel was particularly good. A nice atmoshpere, decent food and very helpful barstaff made this pub a pleasure to be in.

Back again this spring - couldn't sample the Old Humbug as none brewed at the time, but the Whapweasel was stunning yet again. Local cheeses just as tasty. This pub's current rating is the highest I've seen on this site - and deservedly...

Lovely setting in wooded river valley a few miles outside Hexham. With its picturesque garden, it probably gets pretty close to pub perfection on a warm summer's evening (alas it was raining when we visted). Snug, rustic interior, great cooking aromas, suitably devoid of pub chain ersatz. Friendly landlady let me sample all five Hexhamshire brews before deciding which to plump for (if you're reading this, yes I'd definitely agree that eople like me are a pain in the rear!). Great range of beers, differing in strength from about 4% to 5.something, including one with unique smoked flavour - acquired taste, but faultless for its novelty value.

To reviewer below - the food is excellent but getting a seat in summer can be a problem..

Proper pub perfection, brilliant during a stroll due to its secluded location. It can be hard to find but it is definitely worth doing so. Great local real ales and food is apparently brilliant, although i didn't try it. One of the best pubs in the North East

A real treasure and well worth dropping in to relax a while.

We've been visiting this marvellous pub for some 3 years now, as each April we spend a week in Hexham. The Hexhamshire brews are still fantastic, the cheeseboard still lingers on the palate, and the manager and his wife are welcoming each and every time we go in. Definitely the best pub in Hexham, I would agree. The world? Well, the Hole in the Wall in Southsea ranks up there with it...

The best pub in Hexham and, quite possibly, the world. Jeff, the manager, is an absolute diamond, as is his wife (she's even given my friends and me lifts back to Hexham at last orders before), the beer is good, the location beautiful and the atmosphere second to none. Makes me pine for Hexham whenever I think about it.

Spent many evenings in the Dipton after wandering down from Hexham. Great beers and food, legendary owner, quality pub games (including bar billiards), and a lovely beer garden. Perfect. 10/10.

This used to be my local, I spent many years stumbling home from this pub in the dark as a youngster. Would highly recommend to any real ale lovers 10/10.
|
fantastic pub, homemade ales, great garden in the summer... they even let me do work experience in the brewery when i was 16!...
|
Great beers; decent home-made food; great staff; great choice of whiskies; lovely place to while away an hour of three. Can't wait to go back.

Five adjectives: Old, Quaint, Rustic, Unspoilt, Unpretentious
Out of the way, tucked down a slow lane south of Hexam, this old pub looks as though its changed little through the past century. Watch your head coming through the door -- the beam is well under 6 feet!
A lovely spot to have a country lunch, especially if (like me) you are a cheese aficionado: the ploughmans lunch allows you to choose up to three different cheeses, many of which are local specialties. Real ale available, including several varieties from the Hexhamshire Brewery (I had the Whapweasel). Theres a lovely beer garden in the back, along side a small stream, as well as a pleasant ramble to the nearby Hexam racecourse.

A splendid small unspoiled pub, outlet for Hexhamshire Brewery beers, which are well worth some attention, especially Whapweasel. The ploughman's lunches, with selections of Northumberland cheeses, are gorgeous.
