Great gastropub in pleasant surroundings. Pork belly was fantastic. Harveys Best and Doom Bar available but kept way too cold.

We've eaten at the Ginger Fox several times in the last year or so - sometimes for lunch and sometimes for dinner. The food, without exception, has been excellent and the service equally so. It's not cheap - Brighton prices - but the menu is good and the cooking very good. If there have been off days, we haven't seen them yet.

I have been to this place 3 times in the last couple of years. Its more of a restaurant than a pub. Its not nearly as good as the original Gingerman in Hove which is part of the same group. Like many similar establishments in West Sussex, it is expensive and in my opinion considerably overpriced but the food is quite good.

We visited the Ginger Fox for the first - and probably the last - time in early September 2010. We had pre-lunch drinks sitting in the sunshine in the very agreeable garden. Then we moved inside for the meal. The front-of-house staff were courteous and efficient but their performance was not matched by their colleagues in the kitchen. The food was mediocre at best. Two of us had beef lasagne which resembled no lasagne we had ever tasted before. The beef mince was coagulated into unpleasant lumps, the lasagne pasta was meagre and tasteless, there was no bechamel sauce and the whole dish was swimming in excess liquid. In fact, we had to ask for spoons to cope with this travesty of a beef lasagne. The meals eaten by the other members of our party were not as bad as the lasagne but the portions were very small and the overall standard was disappointing for an establishment which describes itself as a "foodie pub." To sum up, we all concluded that this lunch represented very poor value for money.

This is now the Ginger Fox, part of the Gingerman Group. My partner took me there for a birthday treat last April and we were both really looking forward to it. What we found was disappointment. The dcor was cold an unattractive and the drinks were expensive. My main course was basically steak and chips, no roll and butter, no side dish, no salad, and no garnishes all for 16.50 (side dishes were an extra at 2.50 each). My partners duck portion was smaller than his chocolate dessert and our coffee was so strong it was barely drinkable. We came away very disappointed, drove home and had a sandwich.

More cars at this refurbished eatery than I've seen for long time but I would like to know what's on offer before I consider parking mine. No menue on display outside as far as I could see. Too many customers from car boot field opposite could make using this road in the summer interesting.

Will re-open later this year as the Ginger Fox, part of the Gingerman restaurant chain. Should be good if the Ginger Pig is anything to go by.

i thought the boards over the windows were the biggest clue myself

This pub has now closed.

Had always looked at this pub and thought 'that looks lovely, will have to go and have a meal there..' so finally got round to it, walked in, the barman / waiter / only person who seemed to be working there said he'd be with us in a minute and walked off. We had a look around, there were quite a few dirty plates lying about, but I guess if the poor guy was working front of house on his own then it's understandable. The place was utterly devoid of any atmosphere, empty of life, and about as inviting as a morgue. We ended up walking out when the guy failed to come back, as did the couple who came in after us. A real shame, as the place is really beautiful, though it has always seemed to have it's problems. As the previous reviewer said, it has now been boarded up, and looks like it might have been vandalised due to what looks like damage to the thatched roof, and pub signs in the garden being knocked off. I work nearby, and have been told that it is being turned back in to private residency, though whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Will keep posted!

Going, going, gone ........ I remember this place well over 40 years ago when it was an petrol station and for a pretty petrol station it would have been hard to beat. I've heard that as a resturant the inside was pretty characterless so I've never felt tempted to stop. I drove past a couple of days ago and the windows were all boarded up. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The Shaves Thatch is getting back on track after a disastrous spell culminating in it's temporary closure. Having been a regular here previously I was pleased to see that the food served here is excellent again. We visited on a Saturday night (having popped into the newly refurbished Devils Dyke tavern first but finding it the same rubbish but in different packaging!). We mistook the specials blackboard as the main menu as there was so much choice and plumped for steak and ale pie. This was probably the best pie I've ever had! Proper pastry, melt in your mouth chunks of beef with a thick tasty gravy served with proper chips and a good selection of veg. Also got complimentary cauliflower cheese! The desserts were gorgeous - treacle pudding with custard was light and tasty, unlike some of the tasteless stodge served up in numerous other pubs and the cheesecake was extremely tasty. Real ales compliment the good food selection. It was quiet when we visited but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, so take a chance and visit before the world and his wife find out how good it is and then you won't be able to get a table!

God this is a depressing place. Forget about the drab decor and grim lighting. And peeling paintwork. And rusty garden furniture. And grimy carpets. And noise of the traffic from the road. What's really annoying about this place are all the signs. Please park neatly. Please do not park here. Please ensure you turn the tap off after you have washed your hands. Perhaps they'll have signs next saying please behave yourself and drink quietly and leave immediately you have finished your drink. THink what this place survives on is the number of people that go there after the huge car boot sale held in the field opposite which goes on virtually every weekend in the summer. Other than that, AVOID THIS PLACE.
