Village pub in delightful setting with views over meadows. Excellent beers, we chose Irving's Spinnaker. Sadly though the management have got problems. Should have realised when we saw the large "Staff Wanted" board. We arrived at 8pm knowing they served food until 9pm. With only one person behind the crowded bar it took 20 mins to get our drinks. When we asked for a menu we were told there was an hour's delay on food. We took the menus out to the beer garden to make our choice and had just fought our way back to the bar to place our food order when the chef burst out of the kitchen saying, "Kitchen's closing - no more food tonight!" Very disappointing as we had travelled quite a way to visit the pub as it had such a good write-up in the "Good Beer Guide".

Roadside pub that lacks character. The bar staff are certainly friendly and knowledgeable. The beer range is also good - Youngs Bitter, Weltons Persian Princess & Hoptical Illusion, Dark Star American IPA & Tring Rocket Man were the selection last Sunday lunchtime. There is a fairly open plan bar and a separate restaurant area. It's a shame that so many pubs have to rely on food these days to make ends meet.
Large country pub, definitely more a restaurant than a pub. However it is possible to have a drink and not eat. Not unattractive bar area in the original pub and a modern restaurant extension. Both beer and food were good.

Having been on a walk that took me past two closed pubs, The Thurlow Arms at Baynards and The Crown at Alfold, I have to agree that country pubs have to do what they can to survive. The renovation of this place might not be to my taste, it is too open plan for my liking, but at least they have kept a decent area for drinkers and their range of beers is excellent (I had Baseline Dark Matter), and although I didnt eat there I am sure they pay close attention to the quality of their meals as it must be their major source of income these days. So I would not criticise them for modernising an old country pub and hope they continue to stay open for years to come.

To me this pub knows what its doing, its location doesn't give it a big catchment area of locals so it brings in punters from a wider area by providing excelent food and interesting beers. The beers are always well kept and change regularly, the variety is such that you need a nominated driver to do justice to them, Tillingbourne and Dark Star feature regularly - low 'beer' miles is always a bonus. The food is always excellent and in the restuarant always attentively served, although slightly more than the equivalent in Pubco eateries the quality makes the extra well worth paying. Tables are booked at staggered times which ensures you are waited on promptly which is a nice touch

Visited pub on Sunday with a group of walkers. I wasn't walking so got there an hour earlier - very friendly, knowledgeable staff and had some well kept Tillingbourne Black Troll at a table outside slightly unusual initial flavour but certainly grew on me. Later was offered a taste of the Dark Star Green Hopped IPA, which at 6.5% is a little strong for lunch time and driving; it was, however, delicious. We were in the new restaurant side clean, bright but certainly not plastic-y. Now cold and clinical is a tricky one it was a sunny day, the restaurant was full of pleasant diners and I was with a group of friends so no, it wasnt for me. Our parties meal choices were universally excellent. Two courses and (quite a bit of alcohol) came in at 29 a head including service which I guess isnt cheap, but its a (good) restaurant. Economics often force good country pubs down that route.

Not sure it`s `The Pilgrim` that has the problem,I totally agree with his comment on this pub, mike or is it neil or are they the same person ??
ThePilgrim seems to have a lot of issues.....keep slagging the country pubs we have got and guess what....they will all be gone with this nanny state. bet you are a public sector worker. how droll.
yeah i am, but you are barking up the wrong tree. how uninspired is thepilgrim?
What we like for our money is a warm feeling in a nice country pub which you do not get here. ps neil10 are you allowed out of The Barn ???

what do you want for your money 'thepilgrim' it is clean and doing reasonably well. always seems busy when i am in the area. cracking garden in the summer, and nice young staff.
We found this place cold no atmosphere and not really a pub more of a restaurant, will not hurry back. 3 ales available all ok.

Popped in for a drink once. Quaint, typical atmosphere for a country pub.
Went here with a group of 14 walkers and they fitted us into the restaurant part of the building which was a shame as the other side has a much nicer feel with low beams, an open fire and flags on the floor. Felt a bit out-of-place in a posh restaurant with muddy boots on! Beer was good, I had Darkstar hophead & Youngs, they had others on as well. Food was good too although a tad pricey. Staff all very friendly and helpful.
i like this pub for a drink and it is on a walk which is nice when i'm out with the dog. it is lovely to be able to take dogs inside, these days it is often frowned on. the food is basic, but not too expensive for the area.
Got to ask Audrey Why go back ? If the food was average and expensive !!!
a very well presented pub in a great area. The meal was average but i feel it was very expensive for what you got. My husband enjoyed his food and we will be visiting again soon.

Today we enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Tichbourne, a party of ten and one member in a wheelchair. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly, the restaurant was lovely and open, airy and clean and all wheelchair accessable. The food was excellent, hot and served on hot plates, everyone enjoyed their meals from crispy tiger prawns, leek and potato soup to the fish and chips, chicken and leek pie, grilled salmon or liver and bacon. A very good choice available on the menu, including delicious deserts, all served quickly and efficiently by the firendly staff. On behalf of the family I would like to thank everyone who made this an excellent lunch and an enjoyable outing - two of our party were from Canada and now go home with happy memories of their visit.
Everything is ok, but one couldn't say more than that. It seems a little clinical.

Visted on 2 April, with soem tripidation after some recent reviews. Was pleasantly surprised. Clearly there has been a lot of money spent un the refurb. The place is fresh and airy.
Whilst we booked in advance we declined eating in the resurant, preferring a table we bagged net to the fire in the Bar.
The beer gets a plus, thjough perhaps not the barman! Two of my favourites were amongst those on offer, though the Arundel Gold ran out, but the barman could not get round to chnaging the barreel. It was very busy with a huge party in the Resuarant. The bar became very busy too later on. We settled for Langhams sundowner for the rest of the evening. It too was well kept.
Yes, it was mainly Brake brothers style food, but the venison steaks we superb as was the Fish. Our veggie freind had the veggie burger, which scored 10/10 - but it was too big! I agree with previous comments about the chips, they could make thier own. The presentation of the food was another plus point.
A tad epensive, but still a good evening out
Now for the negative point - stupid policy. You get handed a menu which has the Bar food on one page and the Restuarant Food on the other. There is also a blackboard with 4 specials. Each menuu has about 10 choices, not etensive, but something for everyone, BUT. In the bar you can only have the bar menu plus the specials, in the restaurant you can only chose from the restuarant menu plus the specials. It all comes from the same kitchen, served by the same staff - WAKEN UP and smell the coffee

This is a restaurant not a pub, bar area cold looking with the flag stones every where some trad.ales on and wine was ok bit pricey, but it all looks clean and tidy which you would expect from a new place.6/10
had a nice beer here on monday. very well kept. i had a baguette, which was o.k but a bit on the pricey side at about 7. clean and tidy, but i don't like the cameras everywhere, a bit big brother if you ask me.

ok for a beer and a bit of pub grub, don't expect fine cuisine. saying that the building is lovely and the garden ver nice and peaceful
the same food you will get in 99% of managed multiple outlets...brake brothers and not very invetive, and certainly not home made. the beer was good and a nice selection, and staff very friendly.
stopped for lunch on a monday, and the staff were very friendly and the place is nice and clean. however the food is a let down. i had a jacket with chilli, and it was that awful tinned chilli....or it was a very sad effort. my friend had the burger, not bad but frozen chips. what is wrong with these new chefs....make some chips for gods sake.

WE ARE NOT CLOSED. My name is Daniel White and I am the new General Manager of The Sir Roger Tichborne. We are a new venture trying hard to achieve a balance of fantastic food, great real ales and a good atmosphere whilst giving our customers good value for money. We welcome any feedback, good or bad, to help us create a country pub, which supports it's local community.
Thank you in advance for your support and comments.
P.s. If any incindents invloving dog vomit come up again, i'll assure you that I or my staff will clear it up!
i think again this is one of those places that will be great when they get the right landlord. a fortune has been spent changing this into a very chic venue, now you need some people (not just young staff) who know how to run a decent pub/restaurant....whichever it chooses to be.
i found this to be an o.k place. they have spent a fortune on it and i hope they do well. the staff will take a while to settle in, as with all new ventures.
I frequent this pub both for a drink after work and often with friends for dinner. I also go to the Alfold Barn, each have their place in this community and offer different experiences, both of which my wife and I enjoy very much. I happened to be in the pub when this (dog vomit)incident took place and not to drag this incident on I have to say this lady was never asked to clean it up she took that job on herself although she had said it was not her dog. Besides all that I have to say I am rather disappointed in the feedback on this pub, some of which I find a little 'suspect', as it seems to get busier and busier and now to eat there at the weekend booking is a must. I find the food very good indeed, the staff are always very friendly and always remember our names which makes us feel welcome everytime. There is a good spectrum of age groups but would say the majority are around a youthful 40-50 mark not the younger side as previously stated. My advice is always to check these places out for yourself, I am rather suspicious of folk who go to such lengths to run a place down.

Was ordered to clean another dog's sick on entering pub which was nothing to do with my dog. All management very unhelpful and rude. Pub is only a "hooray henry overpriced pub "visited by mostly younger clientele from far and wide. Not visited by many locals in the area.
you can tell the people running this establishment have no clue about running a good country pub. i agree the surroundings are great, but there is no depth to the place. it is shallow and heartless. much better pubs around i.e the compasses, and much better food i.e the barn at alfold don't waste your money, unless you like to mix with false people
My first visit to this pub last night and was very impressed i dont understand the last comment as the staff were friendly and willing to chat. the pub had a warm and busy atmosphere in the bar and a buzzing dining room. the pub is fininshed to a very high standard and i think the owners and management should be proud of what they have acheieved. The beer was to a very high quality unfortunatly when i arrived the youngs was off as however when i asked thje bar staff, they informed me it was line cleaning and it will b back on pump within 30 mins and she went to get b a pint straight from the barrel just like old times!!! highly recommened to eat or drink.
Everything about this place is false, the bar staff are trying too hard to make an impression, the food prices are way too over the top and the place doesnt feel one bit like a public house. Im glad i visited when it opened as i'll be coming back in a year or so's time to see if it has changed to more of a pub than a newly built country cottage.
i agree the place is busy, but i would disagree with the good food....very pricy burger and it was not worth the 9.50 i paid. the garden is very nice, and i would go for a pint in the nice weather.
i think the pub is too sterile and has no atmosphere. i agree it is very busy.
Just to say the Tichborne did open on 01/04/09. The telephone nuber is 01403751873. It has had a great crowd in every evening and the food is fab. It is in a beautiful location and the pub itself has been completed to an exceptional standard. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. It is advised that if you want to eat in the restaurant book ahead.
Allegedly this pub is reopening on April 1st and will be serving reasonably priced pub grub and serving Young's ales.
